ย้อนรอยพัฒนาการเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติของ A. Lange & Söhne

ความสำเร็จที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดประการหนึ่งของ A. Lange & Söhne นอกเหนือจากการกลับมาดำเนินกิจการหลังการรวมชาติของเยอรมนีก็คือการทำให้คนรักนาฬิกาทั้งโลกได้รู้จักและจดจำว่าสถาปัตยกรรมเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบธรีควอเตอร์เพลทนั้นเป็นซิกเนเจอร์สำคัญของทางแบรนด์ และเป็นมรดกทางวิศวกรรมจากยุคศตวรรษที่ 19 ซึ่งเฟอร์ดินานด์ อดอล์ฟ ลังเง่อผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์ออกแบบมาเพื่อความมั่นคงในระยะยาวของนาฬิกา และตกทอดจากยุคสู่ยุคเรื่อยมา
สำหรับในยุคสมัยปัจจุบันนี้ หลังจากที่ A. เทคโนโลยีเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติถูกนำมาใช้อย่างน่าสนใจและเหมาะสมที่สุดอีกครั้งในปี ค.ศ. 2019 เมื่อ A. Lange & Söhne เปิดตัวนาฬิกาสไตล์สปอร์ตรุ่นแรกของตนในชื่อ Odysseus ซึ่งใช้เครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ L155.1 หรือเครื่อง Datomatic ซึ่งเป็นการรวมคำว่า “Date” และ “Automatic” เข้าด้วยกัน เนื่องจากเครื่องนี้ไม่เพียงมีระบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติ แต่ยังสามารถแสดงค่าวันและวันที่ขนาดใหญ่ที่ตำแหน่ง 9 และ 3 นาฬิกาตามลำดับ ในครั้งนี้ Lange เลือกใช้วัสดุแพลทตินัมในการผลิตโรเตอร์ขึ้นลานทั้งชิ้น แตกต่างจากเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่นอื่นๆ ส่วนมากของ Lange ที่มีชิ้นแพลทตินัมถ่วงอยู่ที่บริเวณขอบรอบนอกของโรเตอร์ทองเท่านั้น

One of the greatest achievements of A. Lange & Söhne, aside from their revival following the reunification of Germany, is their success in making watch enthusiasts around the world recognise and remember the three-quarter plate movement architecture as a defining signature of the brand. This construction is an engineering legacy from the 19th century, originally designed by Ferdinand Adolph Lange to enhance the long-term stability of watches, and it has been passed down from one generation to the next.
In the modern era, following the official re-establishment of A. Lange & Söhne in 1994, the brand quickly introduced their first self-winding movement in 1997 with the Langematik. This movement, designated Calibre L921.2, is also known as the Sax-O-Mat. This name is derived from several elements: “Sax” refers to Saxony, where Lange’s manufacture is located; “O” denotes the zero-reset function, which returns the seconds hand to zero when the crown is pulled for time setting; and, “Mat” indicates that the movement features automatic winding. From the outset, this calibre demonstrated that the three-quarter plate architecture could accommodate a centrally mounted rotor. Lange also chose to produce this rotor in 21K gold to ensure sufficient weight and efficient winding performance.
The renowned Lange 1 collection also includes models with a self-winding movement, beginning with the Lange 1 Daymatic in 2010. The Calibre L086.1 used in this model was developed from the ground up as a full-fledged self-winding movement, rather than being adapted from an existing hand-winding calibre. Visually, it retains the signature off-centre layout of the Lange 1, but with a mirror inversion: the time display is positioned on the right, the date window on the left; and, the day-of-the-week display, replacing the power reserve indicator which is less essential on a self-winding watch. This design later served as the foundation for the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar. Introduced in 2012 with Calibre L082.1, this model incorporates a peripheral month ring around the outer edge of the dial. It also features a tourbillon mechanism that is stopped when the crown is pulled, allowing for precise time setting.
Self-winding technology was applied in a particularly fitting manner once again in 2019, when A. Lange & Söhne introduced their first sports watch: the Odysseus. This model is powered by Calibre L155.1, also known as the Datomatic, a name that combines “Date” and “Automatic”. In addition to the self-winding capability, the movement features large day and date displays at 9 and 3 o’clock, respectively. In this instance, Lange opted to manufacture the rotor entirely from platinum, unlike most of their other self-winding movements which typically use a gold rotor with a platinum mass segment along the outer edge.
Naturally, the development of A. Lange & Söhne does not stop here, and this article will be updated in the future to include further innovations from this distinguished German watchmaker.
