American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones came to the northeastern Swiss town of Schaffhausen to set up a watch production facility where machines could be driven by the hydropower plant that harvested energy from the flowing waters of the Rhine. The year was 1868. The business was given the name of International Watch Co. or IWC.
One of their most popular models is the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph, thanks to the technical arrangement of various dial elements that resemble cockpit instruments. Its roots can be traced back to the aviation heritage started by the pilot watches that IWC produced in the 1940s.
The Ingenieur reflects another technicity-oriented watch of importance. Launched by IWC in 1955 to be impervious to the effects of magnetic fields, the watch was given the sportive look on an integrated bracelet as we see it today in 1976 by none other than the prolific watch designer Gérald Genta. Its soft iron inner case and soft iron dial protect the movement from the magnetic strength of up to 40,000 ampere per metre.
Lastly, one should not overlook the Portugieser collection. The name alludes to how, in the year 1939, IWC produced a large wristwatch driven by a pocket watch movement for a Portuguese retailer. The Portugieser retains its vintage appeal with those slim leaf hands and applied Arabic numerals.
