Georges Schaeren founded Mido in 1918. The name Mido originated from the Spanish phrase “Yo mido,” which translates to “I measure”. This phrase was chosen to symbolise precision and reliability, which have been cornerstones of the Mido brand philosophy from the outset.
In terms of technological development, Mido introduced the Aquadura cork-crown system in 1930, which allowed for superior water resistance in an era when waterproof watches were still a rarity. Moving into the 21st century, Mido continued to build upon their heritage of producing practical and durable watches. The brand adopted orange as their corporate identity, symbolising vitality and energy.
As these developments unfolded, Mido also reached into their past to retrieve and reintroduce a few watch models that align with the retro-styling preferences of stylish, modern consumers. The brand is presently based in Le Locle on the border of Switzerland and France. They remain a go-to choice for those who appreciate high-quality Swiss watchmaking at an accessible price point.
