While Patek Philippe is widely admired for their world time watches, the manufacture also has a noteworthy heritage in aviation timepieces. The brand’s pilot watch designs from the 1930s were revived and reinterpreted in 2015 as the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. This year, the collection welcomes a new iteration, the Ref. 5524G-010, presented in a refined white gold case that measures 42 mm. It is paired with an ivory lacquered dial, a khaki green composite strap with black stitching, and a white gold buckle modelled after the buckles on harnesses worn by aviators.
In its modern form, Patek Philippe’s pilot watch allows the simultaneous display of two time zones through the addition of an extra hour hand. The luminous solid hand indicates local time, while the skeletonised hand shows home time. Each corresponds to a small round aperture displaying either white or blue to denote day or night at that location.
When travelling, you can easily adjust the local time hour hand using the pushers on the left side of the case. The one at eight o’clock advances the hand, while the one at ten o’clock moves it back. If the adjustment crosses midnight in either direction, the date hand in the subdial at six o’clock automatically advances or reverses accordingly. To prevent accidental changes, both pushers are equipped with a safety locking system that must be unscrewed before use, ensuring peace of mind while on the move.
