Who would have thought that we would one day have the opportunity to explore, up close, a collection of more than 500,000 rare and historically significant artworks and artefacts of national importance, as we now can at the Victoria & Albert East Storehouse – or V&A East Storehouse – the latest addition to London’s museum scene.
Situated in the Stratford district in the East End of London, this new museum opened its doors to the public on 31 May, offering both locals and tourists the chance to gain access to an extraordinary archive of antiquities and artistic creations that reflect the evolution of culture and technology through time, as well as to observe behind-the-scenes work carried out by curators and museum staff in the preservation and safe storage of these objects.
The V&A East Storehouse is the result of more than a decade of development. It is an extension of the main Victoria & Albert Museum on Cromwell Road in South Kensington, which is widely regarded as the world’s largest museum of art and design. Its mission is to collect creative works across a range of disciplines, from art, architecture and sculpture to design, in order to serve as a wellspring of knowledge and inspiration for future generations.
This museum provides a refreshingly new take on the museum experience. Occupying four floors and covering more than 16,000 square metres, an area greater than 30 basketball courts, the V&A East Storehouse was designed by the internationally renowned studio Diller, Scofidio + Renfro. It is a transformation of the former London 2012 Olympic broadcast and media centre into a museum housing over 250,000 objects, 350,000 books and 1,000 archival storage rooms.
Visitors can immerse themselves in a diverse array of exhibits, ranging from medieval furniture and ancient Egyptian footwear to Roman wall paintings, a 14th century work by Simone Martini, performance costumes worn by Leigh Bowery, textiles designed by Althea McNish, vintage band T-shirts and gig posters, as well as haute couture by Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Comme des Garcons, Issey Miyake and Vivienne Westwood.
A particular highlight is the Weston Collections Hall. This vast central space with a soaring 20-metre ceiling showcases more than 100 selected pieces mounted on open shelving. Some parts of the glass floor offer a view of the 17th century Agra Colonnade, a Mughal architectural structure, and glimpses into staff work areas below.
Other highlights include the 1930s office of Edgar J. Kaufmann – designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and considered the most complete example of his work outside the United States, a richly carved and gilded 15th century carved and gilded wooden ceiling from Spain’s Torrijos Palace, a full-scale Frankfurt Kitchen from the 20th century by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, and the Picasso’s largest work that is the stage curtain for the Ballets Russes Le Train Bleu theatre.
