“นาฬิกาดิจิตอล” เป็นชื่อเรียกที่ทำให้คนนึกถึงนาฬิกาควอตซ์ที่แสดงค่าเวลาด้วยตัวเลขบนหน้าจอแอลซีดี แต่ในสารบบของนาฬิกาจักรกลนั้นก็มีนาฬิกาพกบางรุ่นในอดีตที่ใช้จานหมุนทำหน้าที่บอกชั่วโมงและนาทีด้วยตัวเลขแทนเข็มอย่างในนาฬิกาทั่วไป และสำหรับเราทุกคนในยุคนี้ นาฬิกาดิจิตอลแบบจักรกลลักษณะดังกล่าวที่มีความโดดเด่นที่สุดย่อมต้องเป็น Zeitwerk อันเป็นความสำเร็จทางวิศวกรรมอันน่าทึ่งของ A. Lange & Söhne จากประเทศเยอรมนี
Zeitwerk เป็นนาฬิกาข้อมือที่เปิดตัวเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2009 บนหน้าปัดมีหน้าต่างแสดงค่าชั่วโมงอยู่ทางด้านซ้ายด้วยจานหมุน 1 จาน ส่วนทางด้านขวานั้นเป็นหน้าต่างแสดงค่านาทีด้วยจานหมุน 2 จาน (สำหรับตัวเลขหลักสิบและหลักหน่วย) และมีเข็มวินาทีอยู่ตรงกลางด้านล่างกับเข็มบอกกำลังลานสำรองอยู่ตรงกลางด้านบน
เราอยากให้คุณลองคิดดูว่าในวันหนึ่งนั้นมี 24 ชั่วโมง และในแต่ละชั่วโมงมี 60 นาที นั่นหมายความว่าเครื่องของนาฬิกา Zeitwerk จะต้องขับให้จานตัวเลขเคลื่อนไปข้างหน้ามากถึงวันละ 1,440 ครั้ง หากเป็นช่วงที่จะต้องเปลี่ยนตัวเลขหลักสิบของนาทีด้วยก็จะต้องขับเคลื่อน 2 จานพร้อมกัน และหากเป็นจังหวะที่ขึ้นชั่วโมงใหม่นั้นก็จะต้องขับเคลื่อนจานตัวเลขทั้ง 3 พร้อมกันทั้งหมด Lange จึงต้องออกแบบเครื่องนาฬิกาของ Zeitwerk ให้สามารถนำส่งพลังงานได้อย่างเพียงพอสำหรับการขับเคลื่อนจานตัวเลขขนาดใหญ่ได้อย่างแม่นยำและสม่ำเสมอไม่ว่าในนาทีนั้นจะมีการเคลื่อนตัวของ 1, 2 หรือ 3 จาน
วิธีการของทีมวิศวกรชาวเยอรมันคือการใช้เมนสปริงชนิดพิเศษที่มีความหนามากกว่าปกติเพื่อให้ได้แรงบิดสูงกว่า แล้วจากนั้นจึงควบคุมระดับความสม่ำเสมอของพลังงานไม่ให้มากหรือน้อยเกินไปด้วยการใช้กลไกเรมองตัวร์เป็นตัวกลางในการรับและสะสมพลังงานในแต่ละนาทีจากเมนสปริงก่อนที่จะปล่อยต่อในจังหวะขึ้นนาทีใหม่เพื่อขับเคลื่อนจานตัวเลขต่างๆ ที่กล่าวถึงข้างต้นนั้น
คอลเลคชั่น Zeitwerk มีการพัฒนาต่อเนื่องมาตามลำดับด้วยรุ่น Zeitwerk Striking Time ในปี ค.ศ. 2011 ซึ่งสามารถตีเสียงสัญญาณทุกห้วง 15 นาทีและเมื่อขึ้นชั่วโมงใหม่ จากนั้นในปี ค.ศ. 2015 จึงมี Zeitwerk Minute Repeater ที่ฉีกกฎเดิมๆ ของวงการนาฬิกาด้วยการแบ่งห้วงเวลาใน 1 ชั่วโมงเป็นห้วงละ 10 นาทีแทนที่จะเป็นห้วงละ 15 นาทีแบบเดิมเพื่อความง่ายในการทดเลข แล้วจึงมีพัฒนาการที่มีประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งในชีวิตประจำวันในรูปของ Zeitwerk Date ปี ค.ศ. 2019 ซึ่งไม่เพียงมีการแสดงค่าวันที่ด้วยตัวเลขสีแดงรอบหน้าปัดเท่านั้นแต่ยังมีการปรับปรุงเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบไขลานตระกูลคาลิเบอร์ L043 ของ Lange เสียใหม่ให้มีกำลังลานสำรองเพิ่มขึ้นอีกเท่าตัวจากเดิม 36 ชั่วโมงเป็น 72 ชั่วโมง ด้วยการใช้แบเรลคู่แทนที่แบเรลเดี่ยวแบบเดิม
ล่าสุดเมื่อวันที่ 25 กรกฎาคมที่ผ่านมา A. Lange & Söhne ประกาศเปิดตัว Zeitwerk Date รุ่นใหม่ในเวอร์ชั่นพิงค์โกลด์เพิ่มเติมจากเดิมที่มีเวอร์ชั่นไวท์โกลด์เพียงรุ่นเดียวเท่านั้น ตัวเรือนของนาฬิการุ่นนี้มีขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 44.2 มม. และหนา 12.3 มม. ทำงานด้วยเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบไขลานที่มีคอนสแคนท์ฟอร์ซเอสเคปเมนท์รุ่นคาลิเบอร์ L043.8 ซึ่งประกอบด้วยชิ้นส่วนมากถึง 516 ชิ้น ทั้งหมดขัดแต่งอย่างสุดบรรจงตามสไตล์ของ Lange พร้อมการแกะสลักบาลานซ์ค็อกและเอสเคปวีลค็อกด้วยมือ

The term “digital watch” typically conjures up images of quartz timepieces with LCD screens displaying the time in numerical format. However, in the world of mechanical watchmaking, there have long been pocket watches that used rotating discs to display hours and minutes in digits instead of traditional hands. Today, the most iconic and outstanding example of a mechanical digital watch is undoubtedly the Zeitwerk by A. Lange & Söhne of Germany: a true marvel of micro engineering.
First launched in 2009, the Zeitwerk wristwatch features a jumping digital display. On its dial, a single disc on the left shows the hours, while two discs on the right represent the tens and units of the minutes. Below centre sits the small second subdial, balanced by a power reserve indicator above.
To appreciate the complexity of the Zeitwerk, we need to consider one thing first. There are 24 hours in a day, each with 60 minutes – that means the movement must advance its numeral discs 1,440 times per day. Moreover, in some minutes, two discs must move simultaneously, and on the hour, all three discs jump together. This requires a constant and reliable release of sufficient energy to ensure precise advancement of the large discs, regardless of how many are activated at a given moment.
Lange’s solution lies in a specially designed barrel with above-average mainspring thickness that ensures a higher torque. Energy from this barrel is not sent directly to the jumping display, but is instead temporarily stored in a remontoire – this intermediary mechanism regulates the flow of energy in each minute, allowing the movement to deliver precisely the right amount of force needed for the advancement of the disc(s).
The Zeitwerk collection has since evolved, beginning with the Zeitwerk Striking Time in 2011, which audibly chimes every quarter and on the hour. In 2015, the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater was introduced, breaking convention by sounding the time in 10-minute intervals instead of the traditional 15, simplifying the mental calculation for the wearer. Then, in 2019, the Zeitwerk Date added a practical calendar function, showing the date in red numerals around the dial. That model also introduced a redesigned hand-winding Calibre L043 with twin barrels, doubling the power reserve from 36 to 72 hours.
Most recently, on 25 July this year, A. Lange & Söhne unveiled a new variant of the Zeitwerk Date in pink gold, joining the existing white gold model. The case measures 44.2 mm in diameter and 12.3 mm thick, housing the hand-winding, constant-force escapement Calibre L043.8. Comprising 516 individual parts, the movement is meticulously finished per the German manufactory’s high standards, including hand-engraved balance and escape wheel cocks.
Travellers will find added convenience in this model: a pusher at 4 o’clock allows for quick one-hour increments to adjust local time, while another pusher at 8 o’clock lets the user update the date accordingly.
