คนเล่นนาฬิกายุคนี้โชคดีกว่าคนเล่นนาฬิกายุคก่อนมากเพราะมีแหล่งข้อมูลประเภทต่างๆ ให้เข้าถึงได้หลากหลาย การสั่งซื้อนาฬิกาจากต่างประเทศ การติดตามพัสดุและการชำระค่าภาษีทำได้โดยง่ายและรวดเร็ว ทั้งยังมีตัวเลือกเป็นแบรนด์ที่เกิดใหม่จำนวนมาก แต่ในขณะเดียวกันแบรนด์ที่มีประวัติศาสตร์ยาวนานแต่ไม่ได้มีขนาดใหญ่โตก็อาจจะถูกหลงลืมไปบ้าง ส่วนหนึ่งเพราะนักสะสมยุคที่รู้จักแบรนด์เหล่านั้นเลิกเล่นนาฬิกาไปแล้วก็ไม่ใช่น้อย
เราขอจัด Laco ไว้ในกลุ่มแบรนด์ที่น่ารู้จักแต่คนรุ่นใหม่ยังรู้จักไม่มากพอนี้ Laco เป็นแบรนด์เก่าแก่จากเยอรมนีซึ่งมีอายุครบ 100 ปีในปีนี้ นับตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1925 ที่บริษัทก่อตั้งขึ้น Laco ก็มุ่งมั่นผลิตนาฬิกาที่ไม่เพียงมอบความเที่ยงตรงแต่ยังมีบุคลิกเคร่งขรึมจริงจัง ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น คุณลุดวิก ฮัมเมลหนึ่งในสองผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์ยังมีวิสัยทัศน์ในการประกันอนาคตของ Laco ด้วยการเปิดบริษัท Deutsche Uhrenrohwerke หรือ Durowe ขึ้นเพื่อผลิตเครื่องนาฬิกาส่งให้กับ Laco โดยเฉพาะ ในขณะที่แบรนด์นาฬิกาเยอรมันอื่นๆ อีกหลายแบรนด์ต้องพึ่งพาชิ้นส่วนที่นำเข้าจากต่างประเทศ
ประวัติศาสตร์ช่วงที่มีความสำคัญไม่น้อยสำหรับ Laco คือช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ซึ่ง Laco นั้นเป็นหนึ่งในกลุ่มนาฬิกา 5 แบรนด์ (เยอรมัน 4 แบรนด์และสวิส 1 แบรนด์) ที่กองทัพอากาศของเยอรมนีว่าจ้างให้ผลิตนาฬิกานักบินประเภท Beobachtungsuhren หรือ B-Uhren ก่อนที่ Laco จะต้องผ่านช่วงวิกฤติควอตซ์เหมือนแบรนด์นาฬิกาอื่นๆ และมีการเปลี่ยนเจ้าของอยู่หลายครั้งช่วงก่อนสิ้นศตวรรษที่ 20 โดยครั้งที่สำคัญที่สุดที่ส่งผลให้ Laco มีความแข็งแกร่งในทุกวันนี้คือการที่นักลงทุนกลุ่มหนึ่งร่วมกันซื้อกิจการ Laco เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2010 มาเพื่อปรับปรุงครั้งใหญ่ มีคอลเลคชั่นนาฬิการุ่นต่างๆ ที่น่าสนใจ และคงความอิสระจากเครือนาฬิกาใหญ่ทั้งหลาย
นาฬิกานักบินของ Laco ในยุคปัจจุบันมีทั้งแบบที่ยึดถือดีไซน์ดั้งเดิมจากสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 อย่างเคร่งครัด มีทั้งแบบหน้าปัด Type A และ Type B และมีทั้งแบบที่มีโลโก้ Laco บนหน้าปัดและแบบที่ไม่มีเพื่อให้ดูเหมือนกับของที่ขายให้กับกองทัพในสมัยก่อนจริงๆ แล้วตั้งแต่ราวปี ค.ศ. 2017 เป็นต้นมาก็มีการผลิตนาฬิกานักบินสไตล์ B-Uhren ในรูปแบบที่หลากหลายมากขึ้น เช่น รุ่นที่มีหน้าปัดสีน้ำเงิน มีหน้าปัดสีขาว มีตัวเรือนผลิตจากบรอนซ์ หรือมีการใช้กระบวนการพิเศษให้ตัวเรือนและหน้าปัดดูมีอายุเหมือนผ่านการใช้งานมานานหลายทศวรรษ ยังไม่นับคอลเลคชั่นอื่นๆ ที่ไม่ใช่สไตล์นักบินซึ่งก็มีหลายคอลเลคชั่นอยู่
เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองโอกาสครบรอบ 100 ปีในครั้งนี้ Laco ได้ประกาศแคมเปญให้คนรักนาฬิกาทั่วโลกได้ร่วมลุ้นนาฬิการุ่นพิเศษจำนวน 100 เรือนผ่านทางช่องทางต่างๆ ทั้งของ Laco เองและพาร์ทเนอร์ทั่วโลกระหว่างวันที่ 19 กรกฎาคมและวันที่ 26 ตุลาคมนี้ World of Watches เราเองไม่ได้เข้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแคมเปญดังกล่าวเนื่องจากเราไม่มีนโยบายที่รองรับกิจกรรมลักษณะนี้ด้วยตนเอง แต่เราก็อยากจะช่วยส่งต่อข่าวดีที่น่าสนใจนี้อยู่ดี
นาฬิการุ่นพิเศษที่ไม่มีวางขายแต่จะต้องได้มาด้วยโชคนี้มีชื่อรุ่นว่า Frieda ซึ่งตั้งตามคุณฟรีด้า ลาเคอร์ หนึ่งในสองผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งแบรนด์ ไม่ได้ใช้ชื่อเมืองในเยอรมนีเป็นชื่อรุ่นเหมือนนาฬิกา Laco ในคอลเลคชั่นปกติ หน้าปัดเป็นสีแดงอิฐเหมือนสีประจำแบรนด์ ตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลได้รับการพ่นทรายบนพื้นผิวจนมีสีเข้มขึ้น พร้อมแกะสลักข้อความ “Laco 1925 – 2025” บริเวณด้านข้างตัวเรือน สวมใส่ด้วยสายหนังสีเทาเข้ม ใครสนใจกรุณาดูรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมบนเว็บไซท์ของ Laco โดยตรง

Watch enthusiasts today are far more fortunate than those of earlier generations, as there is a wide variety of information sources readily available. Ordering watches from countries around the world, tracking shipments, and paying customs duties can now be done with great ease. There is also a wealth of new brands to choose from. At the same time, however, some smaller, historical brands may be somewhat forgotten, partly because many collectors who once knew them have since left the hobby.
We would place Laco in this bracket of brands that deserve more interest among the younger generation. Laco is a venerable German brand that celebrates their centenary this year. Since the company was founded in 1925, Laco has been producing watches that offer not only accuracy but also a serious and sober character. Furthermore, Ludwig Hummel, one of the two founders, had the foresight to secure Laco’s future by establishing Deutsche Uhrenrohwerke or Durowe to manufacture movements specifically for Laco. Remember that this was at a time when many other German watch brands had to rely on imported components.
An important period in Laco’s history was during World War II, when Laco was one of a group of five watch brands (four German and one Swiss) commissioned by the German Air Force to produce Beobachtungsuhren or B-Uhren pilot’s watches. Laco later had to endure the quartz crisis like the other watch brands. They also went through several changes of ownership a few times before the end of the 20th century.
The most significant change, which has given Laco their strength today, was when a group of investors acquired the company in 2010 with the aim of a major revitalization. This has resulted in an array of interesting collections while the company remains independent from the large watchmaking groups.
In the modern days, Laco produces pilot’s watches in various styles. Of course, there are models that strictly adhere to original World War II designs, with both Type A and Type B dials to choose from, with a Laco logo or without one to resemble the pieces sold to the air force back in the days. Additionally, from around 2017 onwards, Laco has offered B-Uhren-style pilot’s watches in a far wider variety, such as models with blue or white dials, bronze cases, and those with a special aging treatment applied to their case and dial to mimic decades of use. And we have yet to discuss their non-pilot collections of which there are a few.
To celebrate their one 100th anniversary, Laco has announced a campaign that offers watch enthusiasts worldwide the chance to win 100 special edition watches through channels operated by Laco and their partners around the globe between 19 July and 26 October this year. World of Watches is not part of this campaign, as it is not our policy to run such activities ourselves, but we are nonetheless eager to share this good news to our dear readers.
This special model, which is not available for sale and can only be obtained by luck, is named Frieda, after Frieda Lacher, one of the two founders of the brand. It does not use the name of a German city as Laco’s regular models do. The dial is in the brand’s signature brick red, while the stainless-steel case has been sandblasted for a darker tone, with the engraving “Laco 1925 – 2025” on the side.
