Coral Gardeners ตั้งสาขาที่จังหวัดตราดเพื่อช่วยฟื้นฟูปะการังในบริเวณเกาะหมากและเกาะกูดโดยเฉพาะ

นอกเหนือจากการผลิตนาฬิกาที่มีความเป็นเลิศเป็นภารกิจหลักแล้ว Rolex ยังมีความมุ่งมั่นในการสนับสนุนพัฒนาการที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสังคมโลกในหลายด้าน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมซึ่ง Rolex มีโครงการ Perpetual Planet Initiative เพื่อเป็นแรงขับเคลื่อนนักสำรวจ นักวิทยาศาสตร์ และองค์กรต่างๆ ทั่วโลกที่ทำงานภาคสนามเพื่อศึกษาและหาทางพิทักษ์ความยั่งยืนให้กับโลกของเรา
หนึ่งในบุคคลที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนในลักษณะดังกล่าวนี้ คือ ติตวน เบอร์นิโก ชายหนุ่มชาวฝรั่งเศสผู้นี้เป็นเทสติโมนีของ Rolex และเป็นทั้งผู้ก่อตั้งและประธานเจ้าหน้าที่บริหาร Coral Gardeners ที่มีความมุ่งมั่นที่จะรักษาและสร้างความยั่งยืนให้กับแนวปะการังที่เขาหวงแหน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นกิจกรรมสร้างความตระหนักรู้หรือการนำนวัตกรรมต่างๆ เข้ามาช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาในการบูรณะแนวปะการัง และจุดนี้เองทำให้ Rolex ให้การสนับสนุน Coral Gardeners มาตั้งแต่ปี 2022 และล่าสุดติตวนและองค์กรของเข้าก็ขยายการดำเนินงานเข้าสู่ภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เป็นครั้งแรกที่เกาะหมากและเกาะกูดในจังหวัดตราดของประเทศไทยเรานั่นเอง
สำหรับติตวนแล้ว เสน่ห์ของน่านน้ำของประเทศไทยนั้นคือความหลากหลายของปะการังที่มีสูงกว่าในแถบเฟรนช์โพลินีเซียของเขา และเพื่อรองรับความหลากหลายของสายพันธุ์ สาขาของ Coral Gardeners ในประเทศไทยจึงได้สร้างศูนย์เพาะเลี้ยงปะการังบนบกแห่งแรกขององค์กรขึ้น นับเป็นศูนย์เพาะเลี้ยงขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ และด้วยการสนับสนุนจาก Perpetual Planet Initiative ของ Rolex ศูนย์แห่งนี้สามารถสร้างบ่อเพาะเลี้ยงปะการังได้ถึง 40 บ่อ และเพาะเลี้ยงปะการังได้มากถึง 50,000 กิ่ง ครอบคลุมหลากหลายสายพันธุ์ รวมถึงปะการังชนิดก้อนและชนิดแผ่ปกคลุม
นอกจากนี้ ยังมีศูนย์เพาะเลี้ยงในทะเลที่กระจายอยู่ในเขตพื้นที่ฟื้นฟูขนาดใหญ่ รวมถึงพื้นที่สำหรับการวิจัยและพัฒนาโดยเฉพาะซึ่งช่วยให้สามารถเพาะเลี้ยงปะการังได้มากกว่า 10,000 กิ่งต่อปี โดยทีมงานได้ประสบความสำเร็จในการเพาะเลี้ยงปะการังรุ่นแรกจนเติบโตเต็มที่ และพร้อมสำหรับการนำไปปลูกคืนสู่ธรรมชาติแล้ว
และเป็นที่น่ายินดีอย่างยิ่งที่การดำเนินงานดังกล่าวเป็นที่สนใจของบุคคลสำคัญและเป็นเทสติโมนีของ Rolex ด้วยอีกท่านหนึ่ง นั่นก็คือ ซิลเวีย เอิร์ล ผู้ก่อตั้งโครงการ Mission Blue ที่มีภารกิจสำคัญในการปกป้องระบบนิเวศทางทะเลหรือพื้นที่ในมหาสมุทรที่มีความสำคัญทางนิเวศวิทยาที่เธอเรียกว่า “โฮปสปอท” การดำเนินงานของ Mission Blue นั้นไม่เพียงครอบคลุมเรื่องการอนุรักษ์สายพันธุ์และความหลากหลายของสิ่งมีชีวิต แต่ยังรวมถึงการดูแลชุมชนที่ต้องพึ่งพิงระบบนิเวศทางทะเลที่อุดมสมบูรณ์เพื่อการดำรงชีวิตด้วย
ซิลเวียเป็นทั้งที่ปรึกษาและบุคคลต้นแบบที่ติตวนยึดเป็นแบบอย่าง ทั้งสองได้ร่วมกันดำน้ำสำรวจความหลากหลายทางชีวภาพใต้ท้องทะเลตามแนวปะการังของเกาะหมากและเกาะกูดเป็นที่เรียบร้อยแล้ว ทั้งยังมีการทำงานเคียงข้างและแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้กับชาวบ้านในพื้นที่
หลังจากนี้ทาง Coral Gardeners ก็มีความหวังที่จะผลักดันให้พื้นที่ดังกล่าวได้รับการประกาศเป็นโฮปสปอทแห่งใหม่ของ Mission Blue และเป็นแห่งแรกของอ่าวไทยด้วย และหากเป็นเช่นนั้นได้จริงก็จะเป็นการเพิ่มโอกาสให้น่านน้ำโดยรอบได้รับการคุ้มครองทางทะเลมากยิ่งขึ้นอีกด้วย ความหวังที่จะได้เห็นแนวปะการังของไทยกลับคืนมามีชีวิตชีวาและอุดมสมบูรณ์เหมือนดังเช่นในอดีตจึงดูเป็นไปได้มากขึ้นอีกครั้ง

Beyond their core mission of producing exceptional timepieces, Rolex is also deeply committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to the advancement of global society in numerous fields, particularly environmental conservation. Through their Perpetual Planet Initiative, Rolex seeks to empower explorers, scientists and organisations around the world that work in the field to study and help safeguard the long-term sustainability of our planet.
One of the individuals supported through this initiative is Titouan Bernicot. The young Frenchman is both a Rolex testimonee and the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Coral Gardeners, an organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring the coral reefs he holds so dearly. Whether through awareness campaigns or the application of innovative technologies to assist reef rehabilitation, Bernicot and his team have pursued their mission with remarkable determination. Rolex has supported Coral Gardeners since 2022, and most recently Bernicot and his organisation have expanded their operations into Southeast Asia for the first time, specifically to Mak and Kood Islands in Thailand’s Trad province.
For Bernicot, the appeal of Thailand’s waters lies in their far greater coral diversity compared with those of his native French Polynesia. To support this wider variety of species, Coral Gardeners in Thailand has established the organisation’s first land-based coral nursery facility. It is also regarded as the largest coral nursery of its kind in Southeast Asia. With support from Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, the centre has been able to construct as many as 40 coral nursery tanks, capable of cultivating up to 50,000 coral fragments across numerous species, including both massive corals and encrusting corals.
In addition, there are marine nurseries distributed throughout extensive restoration zones, alongside dedicated research and development areas that enable the cultivation of more than 10,000 coral fragments per year. The team has already succeeded in growing their first generation of corals to full maturity, with the corals now ready to be replanted back into the natural reef ecosystem.
It is equally encouraging that these efforts have also attracted the interest of another prominent Rolex testimonee: Sylvia Earle, founder of Mission Blue, whose organisation focuses on protecting marine ecosystems and ecologically vital ocean regions she refers to as “Hope Spots”. Mission Blue’s work extends beyond species conservation and biodiversity protection to include support for the communities whose livelihoods depend upon healthy marine ecosystems.
Earle is both an adviser and an inspirational figure to Bernicot. The two have already undertaken dives together to explore the marine biodiversity surrounding the coral reefs of Mak and Kood Islands, while also working closely with local communities and exchanging knowledge with residents in the area.
Looking ahead, Coral Gardeners hopes to help secure official designation of the area as a new Hope Spot of Mission Blue: the very first in the Gulf of Thailand. Should that become reality, it would significantly strengthen marine protection efforts in the surrounding waters as well. The hope of seeing Thailand’s coral reefs restored to the vibrancy and abundance they once possessed therefore feels more attainable once again.
