Berneron is a young independent watch brand from Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Founded in 2022 by Sylvain and Marie-Alix Berneron, the brand has quickly captured the attention of collectors with their distinctive vision and craftsmanship. Following the debut of the asymmetrical 38 mm Mirage in 2023 and a 34 mm version the following year, Berneron continues to build a strong reputation among discerning enthusiasts.
Every aspect of the brand’s operation reflects the founders’ passion and commitment to creating timepieces of uncompromising quality, aesthetic refinement, and, dependable after-sales service. Berneron’s long-term growth strategy is guided by a philosophy of slow but steady progress. They plan to release only one new model each year over the next 10 years, always during the first week of September, with annual production limited to 24 pieces per reference.
This year, the brand introduces their second collection: the Quantième Annuel. Its annual calendar complication automatically adjusts the date at the end of every month except February, when a manual correction is required. Unlike a perpetual calendar, an annual calendar is not aware of the leap year cycle – it is unable to tell if a February has 28 or 29 days.
The Quantième Annuel took two years to develop, both in terms of mechanics and design. The dial layout is remarkably original, designed for a vertical reading of time (a jumping hour window at 12 o’clock, a long central hand for the minute, and, a small seconds subdial with a day/night indicator at 6 o’clock) while the calendar information is read horizontally (the date window at 9 o’clock, a short central hand for the day, and, a month window at 3 o’clock).
Powering the watch is the hand-winding Calibre 595, designed to deliver energy efficiently to multiple display points, especially during complex transitions, such as the midnight changeover at month’s end. The movement is equipped with twin barrels, providing a power reserve of 100 hours or roughly four days, and includes a safety mechanism that prevents setting errors from damaging the movement. For instance, when the watch displays 31 January, pressing the month corrector will advance it to 1 February, not 31 February. A hidden pusher built into the crown releases the hinged caseback, allowing the owner to admire the finishing of the movement, reminiscent of vintage pocket watches.
The 38 mm case of the Quantième Annuel has a core made of platinum, accounting for 85% of its mass, encased in an outer layer of 904L stainless steel for the remaining 15% to improve scratch resistance while maintaining the satisfying heft typical of platinum watches. This steel layer can be removed and re-coated, allowing Berneron to restore the watch’s appearance to its original condition when you desire so.
Two dial variations are available – opaline silver and black lacquer – each produced in 24 pieces per year. The watch is paired with a 20 mm Barenia calf leather strap and a stainless steel pin buckle.
