The story of Grand Seiko can be traced back to 1960. The objective at the time was to offer the ideal watch “with standards of precision, durability and beauty”. The Grand Seiko team quickly won every chronometer competition in Japan with their highly accurate movements before they participated in Swiss observatory chronometry trials in 1964. With steady improvement, they managed to rise in the top by 1968 – the last year such a contest was held in Switzerland. Grand Seiko remained a largely domestic affair until 2010 when the joy was shared with the rest of the world through global distribution. It was around this time that collectors from near and far were able to experience what was once a myth to them. These fine watches were so favoured that the company has made a major announcement at Baselworld 2017 to market Grand Seiko as a separate brand from Seiko, whereas it was once a high-end collection within the Seiko brand. The “Nature of Time” philosophy that followed also proposed the world to look at the passage of time through the lens of Japanese spirituality, with the dial playing host to various nature-themed patterns and colours.
