The company behind Citizen watches was founded in 1918, with the first Citizen-branded timepieces entering the market in 1924. Initially, the first product did not have a name. The mayor of Tokyo at the time was then asked to bestow a name, and he chose “Citizen,” with the hope that as many people as possible would be able to own and use these watches for years to come. This vision proved successful, leading to the adoption of Citizen as the company name in 1930.
One of the most significant developments at Citizen occurred in 1976 with the introduction of Eco-Drive technology, the world’s first analogue watch powered by light. This technology harnesses energy from both sunlight and artificial light, functioning effectively even in dim conditions.
Recently, Citizen has been reinventing themselves with a focus on appealing to younger consumers. If you look up the name Tsuyosa, meaning “strength” in Japanese, you will find a range of slightly sporty, multifunctional, self-winding timepieces. These watches feature refreshing dial colours and anti-reflective sapphire crystals, making them suitable for both work and play. And we have not yet begun to discuss Citizen’s higher end ranges like the Series 8 which is also available here in Thailand.
