เรื่องราวของ Monaco เริ่มต้นขึ้นในปี 1969 ตั้งแต่สมัยที่ชื่อแบรนด์ยังคงเป็น Heuer เฉยๆ ไม่มีคำว่า TAG นำหน้า Monaco เป็นนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟตัวเรือนสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสที่กันน้ำได้เป็นรุ่นแรกของโลก และเป็นนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟเครื่องออโต้รุ่นแรกๆ ด้วยในสมัยที่โครโนกราฟอื่นเกือบทั้งหมดใช้เครื่องแบบไขลาน ดังนั้นเพื่อเป็นการบอกผู้บริโภคในทางอ้อมว่าคุณไม่จำเป็นต้องไขลานนาฬิกาเรือนนี้นะ Heuer จึงออกแบบให้เม็ดมะยมของ Monaco อยู่ทางด้านซ้ายของตัวเรือนเสียเลย

The story of the Monaco began in 1969, back when the brand was still known as Heuer, without the TAG prefix. It was the world’s first square-cased chronograph to offer water resistance, and also one of the earliest self-winding chronographs at a time when most others were still powered by a hand-winding movement. As a subtle way to inform wearers that winding was no longer necessary, Heuer even positioned the crown on the left side of the case as a visual cue to the watch’s modern convenience.
The model was named in honour of the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix, establishing an early link to the world of motor racing. Two years later, Steve McQueen famously wore the watch in the 1971 racing film Le Mans, earning it global attention and cementing its status as one of the watch industry’s most enduring legends.
The Monaco Stopwatch we are unboxing today is a special edition commemorating TAG Heuer’s appointment as the first-ever Title Partner of the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco. The brand chose not to unveil the watch during Watches and Wonders in Geneva this past April, keeping it under wraps for a grand debut on the very day of the race itself, which is today. We are likely among the first media outlets in the world to present a hands-on showcase of this model.
The case, crown and pushers are crafted from lightweight titanium and given a black DLC coating. Size-wise, this Monaco is highly wearable. The official measurement of the case is 39 mm, but the square shape of the case means it delivers a fuller presence on the wrist than a 39 mm round watch might.
The design of this limited edition draws inspiration from Heuer’s vintage stopwatches, remembered for their distinctive black, white and red colour scheme. This palette also pays homage to Heuer’s role as a maker of high-precision timing instruments for motorsport. The overall design is a nod to the function-first philosophy of Jack Heuer who led the brand during that time. The black circle at the centre of the square dial is framed by a silver-toned outer ring, while a bold red second scale encircles the periphery, echoing the chronograph hand. The hour markers are styled after those of the original 1969 Monaco and coated in black for contrast and serious aesthetic.
The watch features a 30-minute chronograph counter at 9 o’clock and a running second subdial at 3 o’clock, with a date display at 6 o’clock, creating perfect visual symmetry. This careful balance has been a Monaco hallmark since its inception. Another special detail lies in the use of the vintage-style Heuer badge, rather than the modern TAG Heuer version. This retro flourish is reserved only for select Monaco models and helps capture the spirit of the original in full.
Powering the watch is the Calibre 11 self-winding movement with a 40-hour power reserve, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback. The strap is made from perforated calfskin leather, styled after the driving gloves worn by racers from the past to the present. Measuring 22 mm wide, it fastens with a titanium folding clasp finished in matching black DLC and engraved with the vintage Heuer logo.
The TAG Heuer Monaco Stopwatch Special Edition we are unboxing today is limited to 970 pieces: a reference to the 1970s, the decade in which Heuer built their motorsport legacy. The caseback of each watch is engraved “One of 970”, without individual numbering, so collectors can purchase one without having to scramble for specific numbers.
