Ulysse Nardin, the founder of the eponymous Swiss watch brand, established his own workshop in 1846. He soon began producing marine chronometers, capitalising on the demand for their superior timekeeping accuracy that was essential for celestial navigation at sea. His chronometers quickly gained recognition and were adopted by numerous navies and shipping companies worldwide. This enduring legacy is symbolised by the anchor prominently featured in the brand’s logo.
Notable contemporary innovations include the world’s first minute repeater wristwatch with Jacquemart automata in 1989, the groundbreaking perpetual calendar wristwatch with forward and backward setting functionality in 1996, and the revolutionary Freak in 2001, whose movement itself indicates the time through its rotation. In terms of materials, Ulysse Nardin also pioneered the use of silicon in watchmaking – a feat that was reconfirmed with the introduction of DIAMonSIL or diamond-coated silicon escapement in 2007.
Today, Ulysse Nardin operates from two primary production sites in Switzerland: its birthplace in Le Locle and another facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
