Van Cleef & Arpels เป็นธุรกิจที่ก่อตั้งขึ้นที่อาคารเลขที่ 22 แห่งปลาซว็องโดมของกรุงปารีสในปี ค.ศ. 1906 จากการสมรสระหว่างอัลเฟรด แวน คลีฟ และ เอสแตล อาร์แปวส์เมื่อ 130 ปีก่อน ด้วยความที่ครอบครัวของทั้งสองทำธุรกิจค้าขายจิวเวลรีอยู่แล้ว ผลิตภัณฑ์ของทางแบรนด์ครอบคลุมตั้งแต่ไฮจิวเวลรี เครื่องใช้ที่มีมูลค่าสูงและเรือนเวลาต่างๆ ตั้งแต่แรก และในยุคสมัยปัจจุบันนี้ Van Cleef & Arpels ก็มีพัฒนาการก้าวไกลในโลกของเครื่องบอกเวลา โดยมี 15 รางวัล Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève เป็นเครื่องยืนยันถึงคุณภาพและความคิดสร้างสรรค์
ผลงานชิ้นต่างๆ ที่ Van Cleef & Arpels นำเสนอในแต่ละปีนั้นไม่ได้ถูกจำกัดอยู่ในกรอบโดยทั่วไปของอุตสาหกรรมนาฬิกา หากแต่ได้รับการชี้นำและผูกโยงไปในทิศทางเดียวกันภายใต้ปรัชญา Poetry of Time โดยเราจะเห็นได้ว่านาฬิกาแต่ละรุ่นนั้นนำเสนอความชวนฝันได้อย่างสง่างาม ผ่านทางรายละเอียดต่างๆ จากหน้าปัดสู่ฝาหลังของตัวเรือน และนอกจากที่ความเชี่ยวชาญด้านกลไกจะได้รับการเสริมแต่งด้วยงานศิลป์ชั้นเลิศแล้ว Van Cleef & Arpels ยังให้ความสำคัญกับการปูเรื่องให้กับผลิตภัณฑ์เหล่านี้อย่างน่าหลงใหล จนไม่เพียงสะกดใจนักสะสมนาฬิกาและจิวเวลรี แต่ยังดึงดูดให้กลุ่มลูกค้าผู้มีรสนิยมอื่นที่ชื่นชอบในงานฝีมือและศิลปะอันเลอค่าอยู่แล้วเข้ามาร่วมดื่มด่ำความพิเศษที่ไม่เหมือนใครนี้ด้วย
นาฬิกา Van Cleef & Arpels อันน่าทึ่งแต่ละรุ่นนั้นอาจจะต้องใช้เวลาในการพัฒนานานถึง 6 ปีจนกว่าจะเกิดเป็นกลไกที่ตอบโจทย์ในการสร้างสรรค์ที่วางเอาไว้ได้เป็นอย่างดี และสาเหตุที่ Van Cleef & Arpels สามารถเนรมิตผลงานที่น่าสนใจได้อย่างต่อเนื่องก็เพราะว่ามีเวิร์คช็อปประดิษฐ์นาฬิกา Les Ateliers Horlogers Van Cleef & Arpels ตั้งอยู่ที่เจนีวาเพื่องานด้านนี้โดยเฉพาะ โดยบุคลากรประจำเวิร์คช็อปแห่งนี้มีทักษะด้านต่างๆ นับรวมกัน 30 ประเภท
ความเหนือชั้นทางด้านเทคนิคและศิลปะของ Van Cleef & Arpels ปรากฏให้เห็นเด่นชัดในคอลเลคชั่นนาฬิกา Poetic Complications ซึ่งถือกำเนิดขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 2006 เพื่อฉลองวาระครบรอบ 100 ปีของทางแบรนด์ และนำเสนอแนวทางการประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาที่ไม่เหมือนใครในวงการ
Van Cleef & Arpels ไม่ได้มุ่งออกแบบนาฬิกาที่มีคอมพลิเคชั่นแบบดั้งเดิมอย่างเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์หรือตูร์บิยอง แต่พุ่งความสนใจไปที่จักรวาลต่างๆ ที่เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้กับ Van Cleef & Arpels เรื่อยมา ไม่ว่าจะเป็นนักบัลเลต์และนางฟ้า ธรรมชาติอันน่าพิศวง ดาราศาสตร์ที่งดงามจับใจ และเรื่องราวของความรักที่ไม่มีวันจบสิ้น ผลงานแต่ละโปรเจคภายใต้คอลเลคชั่น Poetic Complications นี้ได้รับการเนรมิตให้มีชีวิตชีวาด้วยกลไกอันหลักแหลม ประกอบกับเทคนิคงานศิลป์พิเศษต่างๆ ตลอดจนการประดับอัญมณีที่สื่ออารมณ์
นาฬิกา Lady Arpels Féerie จากปี ค.ศ. 2007 คือหนึ่งในตัวอย่างที่เด่นชัดของผลงานจากคอลเลคชั่น Poetic Complications บนหน้าปัดแบบแกะสลักด้วยเทคนิคกิโยเช่และเคลือบเอนาเมลสุดวิจิตรของนาฬิการุ่นนี้มีรูปนางฟ้าอยู่ตรงกลาง มีคทาวิเศษทางด้านซ้ายและปีกนางฟ้าทางด้านขวาทำหน้าที่เป็นเข็มชั่วโมงและเข็มนาทีซึ่งจะดีดตัวกลับไปยังจุดเริ่มต้นหลังจากที่ทำหน้าที่ของตนครบ 12 ชั่วโมงหรือ 60 นาทีแล้ว เข็มแบบเรโทรเกรดนี้เป็นวิธีการบอกเวลาที่แตกต่างจากนาฬิกาทั่วไป และ Van Cleef & Arpels เองนั้นก็เคยใช้วิธีการบอกเวลาดังกล่าวมาตั้งแต่ที่เคยมีการผลิตนาฬิกาพกรุ่นหนึ่งตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1927 แล้ว
เมื่อถึงปี ค.ศ. 2010 นักสะสมนาฬิกาทั่วโลกก็ได้รับการตอกย้ำถึงศักยภาพในการออกแบบกลไกพิเศษในนาฬิกาของ Van Cleef & Arpels อีกครั้งเมื่อมีการเปิดตัว Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux ซึ่งชนะรางวัล Ladies’ Watch Prize จากรายการ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève ในปีเดียวกัน นาฬิกา “สะพานแห่งความรัก” รุ่นนี้บอกเล่าเรื่องราวของคู่รักที่นัดพบกันบนสะพานใจกลางกรุงปารีส โดยที่ตัวหุ่นผู้หญิงและผู้ชายนั้นที่จริงแล้วเป็นเข็มแบบเรโทรเกรดที่ทำหน้าที่บอกชั่วโมงและนาทีซึ่งจะมาบรรจบกันตรงกลางสะพานในเวลาเที่ยงคืนและเที่ยงวัน และมีการตกแต่งแผ่นหน้าปัดให้เป็นฉากเมืองที่ดูสมจริงเพื่อความโรแมนติกของบรรยากาศโดยรวม
และท้องฟ้ายามค่ำคืนของกรุงปารีสก็ถูก Van Cleef & Arpels ใช้เป็นเวทีนำเสนอฉากอันแสนหวานของคู่รักคู่เดิมอีกครั้งในปีนี้กับนาฬิกาที่มีชื่อว่า Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate เรื่องราวของหญิงสาวและชายหนุ่มที่เคยไปพบกันกลางสะพานแห่งกรุงปารีสในเวลาเที่ยงคืนและเที่ยงวันนั้นได้รับการบอกเล่าต่อไป โดยในครั้งนี้เราได้เห็นเขาทั้งสองในงานเต้นรำกลางแจ้งสไตล์แก็งแกตซึ่งเคยเป็นที่นิยมตามชานเมืองปารีสยุคศตวรรษที่ 19
และแน่นอนว่า Van Cleef & Arpels จะต้องมีลูกเล่นให้ทุกคนจดจำนาฬิการุ่นนี้ นั่นก็คือกลไกออโตมาตอนชุดใหม่ที่ขับเคลื่อนให้ตัวละครทั้งสองโน้มตัวเข้ามาจูบกันอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติในเวลาเที่ยงคืนและเที่ยงวัน หรือเมื่อเจ้าของนาฬิกากดปุ่มที่อยู่ทางด้านข้างตัวเรือนบริเวณตำแหน่ง 8 นาฬิกา หน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ประกอบด้วยชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ ถึง 5 ระดับ และได้รับการตกแต่งด้วยเทคนิคงานศิลป์ต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นกริซายล์เอนาเมลเพื่อเนรมิตฉากเมืองและท้องฟ้ายามค่ำคืน หรือการแกะสลักพื้นหินทางเดินทางด้านล่างของหน้าปัด เพื่อให้ทั้งหมดกลายเป็นเวทีที่มีมิติและชีวิตชีวา
สำหรับสิ่งประดิษฐ์ที่มาจากจักรวาลแห่งธรรมชาติอันน่าพิศวงนั้นก็มีรุ่นล่ารุ่นหนึ่งซึ่งสามารถนำเสนอจังหวะแห่งการเคลื่อนไหวในโลกกว้างได้อย่างสมจริง บนหน้าปัดของนาฬิกาที่มีชื่อว่า Lady Arpels Brise d’Été หรือแปลแบบตรงตัวได้ว่า “สายลมแห่งฤดูร้อน” นี้จะมีผีเสื้อไวท์โกลด์และผีเสื้อเยลโลว์โกลด์ที่ผลัดกันทำหน้าที่บอกชั่วโมงและนาทีโดยสังเขปบนสเกลที่ทำรัศมี 180 องศา แต่ขึ้นชื่อว่าเป็น Van Cleef & Arpels ก็ย่อมไม่มีอะไรธรรมดาอยู่แล้ว
เพียงคุณกดปุ่มบริเวณ 8 นาฬิกาของตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ขนาด 38 มม. โมดูลเคลื่อนไหวของนาฬิกาในกลุ่ม Poetic Complications รุ่นนี้ก็จะทำงานทันทีโดยส่งให้ผีเสื้อทั้งสองบินรอบหน้าปัดจนครบหนึ่งรอบในเวลา 12 วินาทีก่อนที่จะมาหยุดที่ตำแหน่งเวลาที่ถูกต้องอีกครั้ง ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น ดอกโคโรลล่าทั้งสามที่อยู่บนก้านดอกไม้สีเขียวก็จะเคลื่อนไหวไปมาราวกับกำลังลู่ลมเหมือนอยู่ในธรรมชาติจริงๆ เฉดสีฟ้าอาซูร์ของดอกโคโรลล่านั้นเกิดจากเทคนิควาโลนเนเอเนเมล และเกสรดอกไม้สีเหลืองนั้นก็คือสเปสซาไทท์ที่ประดับไว้ แล้วยังมีการใช้เทคนิคมิเนเจอร์เอนาเมลเพนท์ติ้งบนพื้นหน้าปัดเปลือกหอยมุกเพิ่มเติมเพื่อความสมบูรณ์แบบของฉากฤดูร้อนยามเช้าฉากนี้
นาฬิกา Poetic Complications อีกรุ่นหนึ่งที่สะกดใจไม่แพ้กันก็คือ Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier ซึ่งได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากนาฬิกาดอกไม้ของคาร์ล วอน ลินเน นักพฤษศาสตร์ชาวสวีเดนในยุคศตวรรษที่ 18 สวนดอกไม้จำลองนี้บรรจุอยู่ในตัวเรือนทองประดับเพชรขนาด 38 มม. หน้าปัดเปลือกหอยมุกสีขาวได้รับการตกแต่งด้วยลวดลายดอกไม้ กิ่งไม้และผีเสื้อน้อยใหญ่ที่ผลิตจากวัสดุล้ำค่าหลากชนิดไม่ว่าจะเป็นไวท์โกลด์ เยลโลว์โกลด์และโรสโกลด์ ผสานกับงานแกะสลักและการวาดรูปขนาดเล็กที่บรรจงแต่งแต้ม นับจำนวนองค์ประกอบบนหน้าปัดรวมได้ 255 ชิ้นโดยเป็นชิ้นส่วนที่ขยับเขยื้อนได้จำนวน 166 ชิ้น
แต่ที่เก๋สุดคือชั้นเชิงในการบอกเวลาด้วยดอกไม้ โดยในแต่ละชั่วโมงนั้นจะมีดอกไม้บานเป็นจำนวนเท่ากับตัวเลขชั่วโมงในขณะนั้น เช่น เวลา 8 นาฬิกาจะมีดอกไม้บานจำนวน 8 ดอกเพื่อเผยให้เห็นเพชรสีขาวหรือเพชรสีเหลืองที่ประดับอยู่ตรงกลางข้างใน แล้วเมื่อขึ้นชั่วโมงใหม่ ดอกไม้ชุดเดิมก็จะหุบปิดแล้วดอกไม้ชุดใหม่จำนวน 9 ดอกจะบานขึ้นแทนที่ สำหรับการแสดงค่านาทีนั้นถูกแยกออกไปเป็นเข็มนาทีแบบเรโทเกรดในหน้าต่างทางด้านซ้ายของตัวเรือนซึ่งมีสเกลตัวเลขจาก 0 ถึง 60 อยู่ ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อรักษาไว้ซึ่งสุนทรียะของหน้าปัด
นาฬิกาในคอลเลคชั่น Poetic Complications มีความน่าทึ่งเป็นพิเศษเพราะว่านอกจากที่วิศวกรจะต้องออกแบบให้ชิ้นส่วนเคลื่อนไหวได้ทั้งหลายทำงานสัมพันธ์กันอย่างไร้ที่ติแล้ว เขายังต้องมีการจัดการให้กลไกดังกล่าวใช้พลังงานอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพที่สุดด้วย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในกรณีที่เจ้าของนาฬิกาสามารถกดสั่งให้กลไกทำงานเคลื่อนไหวได้ตามต้องการ ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น โครงสร้างของกลไกและชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ ที่คิดค้นขึ้นมานั้นยังจะต้องมีขนาดเล็กและบางที่สุดเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้ด้วยจึงจะสามารถบรรจุลงไปในตัวเรือนที่มีขนาดเหมาะสม สวมใส่ได้จริงและดูสง่างามเวลาที่อยู่บนข้อมือ
ความเป็นเลิศในด้านการวิจัยและพัฒนานั้นไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่เพียงแค่นาฬิกาข้อมือเท่านั้น หากแต่ยังครอบรวมถึงสิ่งประดิษฐ์บอกเวลาอันน่าอัศจรรย์ต่างๆ เพื่อประดับโต๊ะหรือที่อยู่อาศัยของคุณ ซึ่ง Van Cleef & Arpels จัดหมวดหมู่ผลิตภัณฑ์เหล่านี้ไว้ภายใต้คอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Objects
คอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Objects เริ่มต้นขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการในปี ค.ศ. 2017 เมื่อ Van Cleef & Arpels เปิดตัวสิ่งประดิษฐ์ที่มีชื่อว่า Automate Fée Ondine ซึ่งมีทั้งฟังก์ชั่นในการบอกเวลาและหุ่นออโตมาตอนที่เคลื่อนไหวได้อย่างน่าทึ่ง
ในปีนี้ Naissance de l’Amour คือภาคต่อของผลงานที่มาก่อนหน้า ได้แก่ Bouton d’Or (ค.ศ. 2024) Éveil du Cyclamen (ค.ศ. 2023) และ Rêveries de Berylline (ค.ศ. 2022) ซึ่งทั้งหมดใช้ชุดกลไกออโตมาตอนที่ออกแบบร่วมกับคุณฟรองซัวส์ จูโนด์ซึ่งเป็นช่างประดิษฐ์ออโตมาตอนชื่อดังจากเมืองแซงต์ครัวซ์ ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ เมื่อกลไกทำงาน มวลหมู่ขนนกทางด้านบนจะเปิดออก คิวปิดหน้าเพชรตัวน้อยบนปุยเมฆจะถูกยกขึ้นและหมุนไปมาพร้อมขยับปีกที่ตกแต่งด้วยพลิคอาชูร์เอนาเมลอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ ก่อนที่ทุกอย่างจะปิดกลับเข้าที่เมื่อสิ้นสุดรอบของการแสดง
ผลงานที่โดดเด่นอีกชิ้นหนึ่งในคอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Objects มีชื่อว่า Planétarium และเป็นผลงานที่มีขนาดใหญ่มาก กล่าวคือ มีเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 66.5 ซม. และสูง 50 ซม. ตัวกลไกมีสัญลักษณ์แทนดาวพุธ ดาวศุกร์ ดาวอังคาร ดาวพฤหัสบดี ดาวเสาร์และโลกพร้อมด้วยดวงจันทร์ ซึ่งทั้งหมดจะโคจรรอบดวงอาทิตย์ด้วยความเร็วเท่ากับความเป็นจริงในอวกาศ ที่เร็วที่สุดนั้นคือดาวพุธที่ใช้เวลา 88 วันและที่นานที่สุดนั้นคือดาวเสาร์ซึ่งต้องใช้เวลานานถึง 29.5 ปีทีเดียว สำหรับดวงจันทร์นั้นก็จะโคจรรอบโลกครบหนึ่งรอบในเวลา 27.3 วัน
เมื่อกลไกของ Planétarium เริ่มทำงาน ดาวตกดวงหนึ่งจะปรากฏขึ้นมาจากช่องเปิดบนพื้นหน้าปัดแล้วเริ่มออกเดินทางไปรอบวงจนดูราวกับว่ามันได้พัดให้ดาวเคราะห์ทั้งหลายหมุนไปตามจังหวะของเสียงดนตรีที่บรรเลงไป โดยดาวตกดวงนี้จะหยุดที่ตำแหน่งบนสเกลชั่วโมงชั่วครู่หนึ่งเพื่อทำหน้าที่บอกเวลา ก่อนที่มันจะเดินทางกลับไปจนถึงช่องเปิดบนพื้นหน้าปัดแล้วซ่อนตัวลงไปอีกครั้ง ส่วนดาวเคราะห์ต่างๆ นั้นก็จะหยุดทำการแสดงแล้วกลับไปยังตำแหน่งที่ถูกต้องในวงโคจรของตนตามเดิมด้วยเช่นกัน

Van Cleef & Arpels was established in 1906 at 22 Place Vendôme, following the marriage of Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels who both came from families with backgrounds in the jewellery trade. The Maison’s portfolio covered High Jewellery, precious objects and timepieces right from the beginning. In the modern days, the Maison has made great strides in the world of timepieces, and won 15 prizes at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève since 2005.
The novelties presented each year by Van Cleef & Arpels go beyond the scope of traditional watchmaking. They are guided by, and united under, the Maison’s overarching Poetry of Time philosophy. From the dial to the back of the case, each timepiece tells a moment of grace and enchantment. Their mechanical expertise is deftly married to craftsmanship and presented as fascinating products with a unique and richly woven storytelling to entice not only watch and jewellery collectors, but also a broader realm of discerning individuals who indulge in savoir-faire and the arts.
Each new project is a true collective work and may take up to six years to develop the necessary technical solution to make the magic happen. This is made possible through the Maison’s insightful direction, and the strong collaboration between Paris and Les Ateliers Horlogers Van Cleef & Arpels or Watchmaking Workshops in Geneva where 30 expert crafts are in-housed.
The Maison’s technical and artistic excellence is evident in the Poetic Complications collection, created in 2006 to mark the brand’s centenary. It introduced a distinct approach to watchmaking while reflecting Van Cleef & Arpels’ art of telling stories in the field of watchmaking.
Rather than pursuing traditional complications such as the perpetual calendar or tourbillon, Van Cleef & Arpels chose to celebrate the universes that have inspired its creations over the decades: ballerinas and fairies, Enchanting Nature, Poetic Astronomy, and love stories. Each project brings to life a three-dimensional scene through carefully conceived mechanical ingenuity, realised with numerous métiers d’art, specialist techniques, and, of course, gemstones.
The Lady Arpels Féerie watch of 2007 is among the early examples of what the Poetic Complications collection embodies. On this timepiece, a fairy sits on a richly guilloché and enamelled dial, her magic wand points to the hour on the left and one of her wings to the minutes on the right – they return instantly to their starting positions after completing a 12-hour or 60-minute cycle. These retrograde hands indicate the time in a most unconventional way. This distinctive display traces its origins to a certain pocket watch created by the Maison in 1927.
In 2010, even collectors previously unaware of Van Cleef & Arpels’ horological capabilities were compelled to take notice when the Maison presented the Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux watch, winning that year’s Ladies’ Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Literally meaning “Lover’s Bridge,” the Pont des Amoureux collection tells the story of two lovers who meet at midnight – and again at midday – on a Parisian bridge. The two figures double as retrograde hands that indicate the hours and minutes respectively, with the entire dial serving as a scene for this romantic choreography.
This year, the night sky over Paris once again sets the stage for Van Cleef & Arpels to recount the tender tale of its iconic lovers, brought to life in a timepiece named Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate. Continuing the story of the couple’s initial midday and midnight rendezvous on a bridge in Paris, the young man and woman are now depicted sharing a moment in a guinguette: an open-air dance café typical of Paris surroundings areas in the 19th century.
As always, Van Cleef & Arpels introduces a delightful element to impress in this creation: a newly developed automaton mechanism that required four years of development gently draws the couple towards one another for a kiss at both noon and midnight, or upon the press of a button located on the side of the case at the 8 o’clock position. Once again, the 5-layer dial becomes a theatrical backdrop, brought to life through techniques as diverse as grisaille enamel for the cityscape and night sky, and engraving for the cobblestone pavement at the base of the scene.
Where Enchanting Nature is concerned, the latest Poetic Complications watch that captivates with its lifelike animation is the Lady Arpels Brise d’Été, literally the “summer breeze”. Two butterflies in white or yellow gold take turns to indicate the hours and the approximate minutes across a 180 degrees arch, but that is not all, of course.
The push of a button at the eight o’clock position of the 38 mm white gold case activates the Poetic Complications mechanism of the watch, sending the two butterflies on a 12-second flight across the dial before stopping at the correct time. While this happens, the three corolla flowers on green stems gently sway to the tune of an imaginary breeze – their realistic azure shades are realised thanks to the vallonné enamel technique, and their pistils are represented by spessartite garnets. A miniature enamel painting on a mother-of-pearl background completes this summer morning scene.
Equally spellbinding is the Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier watch, another remarkable member of the Poetic Complications collection. This delightful timepiece is inspired by the floral clock concept of 18th century Swedish botanist Carl von Linné. In a 38 mm diamond-set gold case, motifs of flowers, branches and butterflies grace the white mother-of-pearl dial. The dial comprises 225 elements in total, 166 of which are moving, all executed in white, yellow and rose gold through techniques which include engraving and miniature painting.
More impressive is how time is told on this watch. For each hour of the day, the corresponding number of flowers will open, mechanically, to reveal either white or yellow diamonds inside. Eight flowers would bloom for eight o’clock, for example, and another combination of nine flowers would take over at the beginning of the next hour. Meanwhile, indication of the minutes is separated to the left side of the case where a retrograde minute hand traces along a scale from 0 to 60, preserving the whimsical beauty of the dial.
Engineering feats seen in the Poetic Complications collection require careful deliberation as several moving parts are at play. As well, there is the matter of energy consumption whenever an animation is involved, especially those on-demand ones. Any architectural construction or technical solution imagined by the Maison must not be only functional but also elegant so as to be as small and slim in size, ensuring the grace, finesse and wearability of each creation.
This research and development excellence extends beyond wristwatches to include objects designed to grace one’s desk or living space. Van Cleef & Arpels groups these wondrous, animated pieces – which also serve to indicate the time – under the Extraordinary Objects collection.
This began in 2017 with the unveiling of the Automate Fée Ondine, an astonishing piece combining a time display with the animation of an automaton. This year, the Naissance de l’Amour automaton continues the lineage of the Bouton d’Or (2024), the Éveil du Cyclamen (2023), and the Rêveries de Berylline (2022) models which were all created in collaboration with François Junod, the celebrated automaton maker based in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland. When activated, a plume of feathers opens to reveal a diamond-faced Cupid nestled on a cloud. The figure rises, rotates, and flutters its wings in a delicate and lifelike display, before the entire scene closes once again.
On the other end of the size spectrum, the Extraordinary Objects collection proposes the Planétarium automaton: a striking creation that measures 66.5 cm in diameter and 50 cm in height. It depicts the planets visible to the naked eye which are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, plus Earth itself and our very own moon. All planets make the journey around the sun at speeds true to their real celestial orbits, from Mercury’s 88-day revolution to Saturn’s 29.5-year journey, while the moon also circle around the Earth once in 27.3 days.
The spectacle of its animation begins when the shooting star rises up through a small door and circles around the dial. As it does so, the planets are swept along in a cosmic ballet to the tune of a special melody. It pauses momentarily to mark the current time on the hour scale, before returning to its secret compartment as the planets resume their correct position in orbit.
