นาฬิกาอาจจะเป็นส่วนสำคัญของชีวิตที่ขาดไม่ได้ แต่เราก็ไม่สามารถละเลยเรื่องความเสี่ยงต่างๆ ขณะเดินทางเช่นกัน

ถ้าคุณอ่านเว็บไซท์นี้อยู่ก็แปลว่าคุณเป็นคนหนึ่งที่มีนาฬิกาเป็นส่วนสำคัญในชีวิต จะใส่เสื้อผ้าอะไรก็ต้องเลือกนาฬิกามาแมทช์ หรืออาจจะกลับกันคืออยากใส่นาฬิกาเรือนไหนก็ต้องแต่งตัวให้เข้ากับนาฬิกา ดังนั้นแน่นอนว่าเวลาคุณไปเที่ยวก็จะอยากใส่นาฬิกาเรือนนั้นเรือนนี้ไปเพราะจะเอาไปถ่ายวริสท์ช็อทกับวิวสถานที่ต่างๆ หรืออะไรก็ตาม
ขณะนี้ก็ใกล้จะถึงช่วงเวลาของการเดินทางครั้งใหญ่ประจำปีของหลายคนแล้ว ผมจึงตัดสินใจเขียนบทความนี้ขึ้นเพื่อเป็นประโยชน์กับใครก็ตามที่จะได้ไปเที่ยวช่วงปีใหม่ แต่ว่าคำแนะนำทั้งหมดก็ย่อมใช้ได้กับคนที่จะไปเที่ยวในช่วงเวลาอื่นๆ ของปี หรือคนที่ต้องเดินทางเพื่อการประกอบอาชีพและธุรกิจต่างๆ ด้วยเช่นกัน และนี่คือ 10 ข้อคิดสำหรับคนรักนาฬิกาในช่วงก่อนเริ่มเก็บกระเป๋า ช่วงระหว่างการเดินทางและช่วงที่คุณกำลังจะกลับประเทศต้นทางครับ …
คำแนะนำที่ 1: อย่าใส่เรือนที่เสียหายหรือสูญหายไม่ได้ไปโดยเด็ดขาด
ขนาดเราใส่นาฬิกาอยู่กับบ้านหรืออยู่กับที่ทำงานปกติของเรายังเป็นรอยและเสียหายได้ ดังนั้นการเดินทางไปต่างถิ่นที่จะต้องมีการยกกระเป๋า เปลี่ยนที่นอน ฯลฯ จึงเพิ่มความเสี่ยงต่อการเสียหายหรือสูญหายโดยปริยาย นี่ยังไม่นับเรื่องการจี้ปล้นต่างๆ ที่เรามักจะเห็นในข่าวกันอยู่เป็นประจำ ดังนั้นไม่ว่าคุณจะเดินทางไปยังประเทศที่ปลอดภัยมากหรือน้อยก็ไม่ควรใส่นาฬิกาเรือนที่คุณรักที่สุดหรือเป็นเรือนที่ไม่สามารถซื้อใหม่ทดแทนได้ไป ประเภทมรดกจากคุณพ่อคุณปู่นี่ไม่ต้องใส่ไปเลย เก็บไว้ในเซฟที่บ้านอย่างดีเพื่อที่จะได้อยู่ให้เราชื่นชมไปนานๆ ดีกว่าครับ
คำแนะนำที่ 2: คำนึงถึงสภาพแวดล้อมที่จะต้องไปเจอ
นาฬิกาสายหนังน่าจะเป็นนาฬิกาประเภทที่เหมาะกับการเดินทางแบบท่องเที่ยวน้อยที่สุด เพราะหากคุณต้องไปเจอน้ำ เจอฝน เจอหิมะหรือแม้แต่อากาศร้อนชื้น สายหนังก็จะเป็นจุดอ่อนให้คุณต้องถอดนาฬิกาเก็บเป็นภาระ ดังนั้นนาฬิกาแบบสายเบรซเลท สายยางหรือสายผ้าก็น่าจะมอบความสะดวกและความอเนกประสงค์ได้มากกว่า แต่ถ้าคุณจะเดินทางเพื่อการทำงานและต้องแต่งตัวเป็นทางการในบางโอกาสก็เข้าใจได้หากคุณจะอยากเลือกใส่นาฬิกาเดรสสายหนังมากกว่า เอาเป็นว่าขอให้คุณเลือกนาฬิกาที่มีสไตล์เหมาะกับลักษณะของทริปและสภาพแวดล้อมที่กำลังจะต้องไปเจอก็แล้วกัน
คำแนะนำที่ 3: หลีกเลี่ยงการนำนาฬิกาติดตัวไปหลายๆ เรือน
ผมสังเกตเห็นว่าคนรักนาฬิกาหลายท่านชอบเดินทางโดยใส่นาฬิกาบนข้อมือ 1 เรือนแล้วยังมีนาฬิกาอีก 2 หรือ 3 เรือนใส่กระเป๋าไปด้วยเพื่อเปลี่ยนใส่ถ่ายรูปกับสถานที่ต่างๆ แต่ผมไม่อยากสนับสนุนเลยเพราะว่าภาพที่ได้อาจจะไม่คุ้มกับความเสี่ยงที่นาฬิกาจะสูญหาย และหากคุณมีนาฬิกาอยู่กับตัวมากกว่า 1 เรือน ศุลกากรของประเทศที่คุณเดินทางไปก็อาจจะตั้งคำถามกับคุณได้ หรือหากถูกตรวจพบตอนกลับเข้าไทยนี่ต่อให้คุณบอกว่านาฬิกาเรือนนั้นซื้อในเมืองไทยแต่ถ้าคุณไม่มีใบเสร็จตัวจริงเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นคู่กันก็ถือว่าพิสูจน์ไม่ได้อยู่ดีและอาจถูกเรียกเก็บภาษีได้ ผมเคยสอบถามแล้วว่าเราสามารถใช้ภาพถ่ายใบเสร็จได้หรือไม่ คำตอบของศุลกากรไทยเราคือไม่ได้นะครับ ต้องเป็นใบเสร็จตัวจริงเท่านั้นซึ่งไม่มีใครพกกันอยู่แล้ว ถ้าเก็บไว้ไม่เป็นระเบียบดีๆ นี่จะหาเจอหรือเปล่ายังไม่รู้เลยด้วยซ้ำ
ในกรณีที่คุณจำเป็นต้องนำนาฬิกาติดตัวไปหลายเรือนจริงๆ เพื่อไปร่วมอีเวนท์นาฬิกากับแบรนด์ใดหรือทำกิจกรรมกับกลุ่มนักสะสมใดก็ควรทำเอกสารขาออกจากไทยให้เรียบร้อย เมื่อไปถึงประเทศปลายทางก็สำแดงตามระเบียบเพื่อป้องกันปัญหาอันอาจเกิดขึ้นได้ แล้วเมื่อกลับเข้าไทยก็ไม่ต้องกังวลอะไรเพราะคุณมีเอกสารขาออกคุมของนั้นไว้อยู่แล้ว ห้ามคิดว่าเป็นนาฬิกาสวิสเมดแล้วจะเอาเข้าสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ได้เลย ในทางปฏิบัติมันไม่ได้ตรงไปตรงมาขนาดนั้น เนื่องจากนาฬิกาที่ถูกส่งออกมาขายยังต่างประเทศนั้นยังไม่เคยเสียภาษีในสวิตเซอร์แลนด์แต่อย่างใด และเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2019 ก็เคยมีนักข่าวในยุโรปถูกศุลกากรสวิสจับปรับมาแล้วเนื่องจากนำพานาฬิกาติดตัวเข้าสวิตเซอร์แลนด์หลายเรือนเพื่อไปงาน Baselworld ในปีนั้น จนเมื่อจบเรื่องแล้วเขาก็มาเขียนเป็นบทความเตือนผู้อื่นไม่ให้ทำผิดระเบียบโดยรู้เท่าไม่ถึงการอย่างเขา
คำแนะนำที่ 4: มีเสื้อแจ็ตเกตอเนกประสงค์ใส่ติดไปตัวหนึ่ง
คุณผู้อ่านอย่าเพิ่งงงว่าผมแนะนำอะไรของผม เสื้อแจ็คเกตนี้ที่จริงมีประโยชน์มากมาย ใส่กันลมกันหนาวก็ได้ แล้วยังกันนาฬิกาเป็นรอยได้ด้วย! โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเวลาคุณนั่งอยู่บนเครื่องบินแล้วใครเดินไม่ระวังมาชนข้อมือข้างที่ใส่นาฬิกาอยู่ หรือคุณนอนแล้วเผลอบิดตัวจนนาฬิกาไปโขกกับอะไรรอบๆ แม้กระทั่งเวลาที่ลงมาจากเครื่องแล้วและมีการยกกระเป๋าขึ้นลงจากสายพาน รถเข็น รถยนต์ รถไฟหรือห้องพัก เสื้อแจ็คเกตนี้ก็จะเป็นเกราะป้องกันนาฬิกาให้คุณในระดับชั้นหนึ่งโดยที่คุณไม่รู้ตัว และเมื่อเดินอยู่ตามถนนหนทางก็สามารถปิดบังนาฬิกาของคุณไม่ให้ล่อตามิจฉาชีพมากนักด้วย ทั้งนี้ เสื้อแจ็คเกตดังกล่าวก็จะต้องมีความหนาหรือบางตามความเหมาะสมกับภูมิอากาศของประเทศที่คุณไปเยือนในช่วงฤดูกาลนั้นด้วย
คำแนะนำที่ 5: เก็บนาฬิกาใส่ซองแล้วใส่ในกระเป๋าถือก่อนผ่านเครื่องสแกนที่สนามบิน
สนามบินต่างๆ มีความข้อปฏิบัติและความเข้มงวดในการสแกนกระเป๋าไม่เหมือนกัน ทั้งนี้ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับเครื่องมือและอุปกรณ์ที่สนามบินแห่งนั้นๆ ใช้ด้วย เดี๋ยวนี้เวลาเราเดินทางจะเห็นว่าบางสนามบินบอกว่าไม่ต้องแยกของเหลวของออกมา แค่เอาอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ออกมาก็พอ บางสนามบินบอกว่าไม่ต้องแยกทั้งของเหลวและอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ออกมา วางกระเป๋าทั้งใบใส่ถาดได้เลย บางสนามบินถึงขั้นบอกว่าไม่ต้องถอดแจ็คเกตออกจากตัวด้วยซ้ำ ในขณะที่หลายสนามบินก็ยังให้เราเอาของเหลวและอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ออกมาวางแยกทั้งหมดอยู่เหมือนเดิม
และบางสนามบินขึ้นอยู่กับว่าเราผ่านเครื่องสแกนตรงโซนใดและเขาใช้เครื่องรุ่นใดตรงนั้น อย่างสุวรรณภูมิของเรานี่ถ้าผ่านเครื่องสแกนที่ช่องฟาสท์แทร็คก็ยังต้องเอาอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ออกมาเหมือนเดิม แต่ถ้าผ่านเครื่องสแกนที่ช่องประชากรปกติชั้นบนจะไม่ต้องเอาอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์ออกมาแล้ว เช่นเดียวกันกับสนามบินแฟรงค์เฟิร์ตที่มีทั้ง 2 รูปแบบคละกัน ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าเราผ่านช่องทางใด เป็นต้น ส่วนสนามบินซูริคจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มซีเรียสสุด เพราะผมเคยถูกขอให้เอากล้องใหญ่ทั้งหมดออกจากกระเป๋ากล้องมาวางบนถาดไปพร้อมกับแล็ปท็อปและโทรศัพท์มาแล้วด้วยเหตุผลว่ามันคืออุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์
นาฬิกาจักรกลไม่ได้เป็นอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์แต่ก็เป็นโลหะ สนามบินส่วนมากไม่ขอให้ถอดนาฬิกาวางใส่ถาดแล้ว แต่ก็ยังมีสนามบินที่ขอให้ถอดนาฬิกาอยู่ ดังนั้นเพื่อความปลอดภัยจากความไม่แน่นอนทั้งปวง ผมจึงขอแนะนำให้คุณเอานาฬิกาใส่ซองแล้วใส่ไว้ข้างในกระเป๋าถือหรือเป้ไปเลยจะดีที่สุด จะได้ไม่ต้องเสี่ยงถูกสั่งให้ถอดนาฬิกาใส่ถาดในภายหลังซึ่งอาจจะทำให้นาฬิกาเป็นรอยได้จากการจับถือแบบไม่ระวังของเจ้าหน้าที่ จากการทำหล่นหรือถูกปัดตก หรือจากการฉกฉวยโดยใครขณะที่ถาดเราไหลออกไปก่อนแล้วแต่ตัวเรายังอยู่ตรงช่องสแกนอยู่ครับ
คำแนะนำที่ 6: โรงแรมไม่ใช่ที่ที่ปลอดภัยเสมอไป
ตู้เซฟที่โรงแรมเป็นอุปกรณ์เพื่อความสะดวกโดยไม่มีการรับประกันถึงความปลอดภัยแต่อย่างใด คุณควรเลือกใช้หรือไม่ใช้ตามระดับความไว้วางใจที่คุณมีให้กับโรงแรมนั้นๆ ก่อนเอาของมีค่าใส่ครั้งแรกก็อย่าลืมทดสอบวิธีการตั้งรหัสเพื่อปิดและเปิดก่อนด้วย เพื่อให้ชัวร์กับขั้นตอนและเพื่อเช็คสถานะแบตเตอรี่ของตู้เซฟว่ายังดีอยู่ ไม่ใช่ปิดได้แล้วไม่ยอมเปิด แต่ถ้าคุณเอานาฬิกาไปด้วยแค่เรือนเดียวอย่างที่ผมแนะนำก็ไม่ต้องคิดอะไรเยอะเรื่องนี้เพราะว่านาฬิกาย่อมอยู่บนข้อมือของคุณตลอดเวลาอยู่แล้ว
เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องโรงแรมแล้วก็แถมอีกนิดว่าการมีซองใส่บัตรเปิดประตูห้องที่มีชื่อโรงแรมนั้นก็สะดวกดี แต่ว่าไม่ควรใช้อันที่มีเขียนเลขเบอร์ห้องคุณเอาไว้ เพราะหากคุณไปทำตกไว้ที่ใดแล้วมีมิจฉาชีพเก็บได้ก็จะสามารถเข้ามาเปิดห้องคุณได้ทันที ต่างจากบัตรที่อยู่ในซองที่ไม่มีเบอร์ห้องซึ่งต่อให้เก็บได้ก็รู้แค่ว่าโรงแรมอะไร แต่ไม่รู้ว่าห้องเบอร์อะไร
คำแนะนำที่ 7: เดินถนนแบบระแวดระวังภัย
พฤติกรรมหนึ่งของนักท่องเที่ยวคือการเปิดมือถือดูแผนที่แล้วเดินไปเรื่อยๆ ตามที่หน้าจอบอก และนี่คือจุดอ่อนจุดหนึ่งที่จะทำให้เราตกเป็นเป้าของมิจฉาชีพได้ง่ายยิ่งขึ้น จริงอยู่ว่านักท่องเที่ยวหรือนักเดินทางย่อมมีอะไรที่ดูแตกต่างจากคนในพื้นที่อยู่แล้ว ไม่ว่าจะด้วยชาติพันธุ์หรือการแต่งกาย เราไม่อาจทำตัวให้ดูเหมือนคนโลคอลได้โดยสมบูรณ์แบบ แต่หากเราไม่มัวแต่มองหน้าจอมือถือ สายตาของเราก็จะเห็นอะไรกว้างไกลขึ้นและทำให้เราเห็นบุคคลต้องสงสัยจนพอจะตั้งตัวได้บ้างก่อนที่จะเข้าใกล้เรา และโดยธรรมชาติแล้วมิจฉาชีพย่อมเลือกเป้าหมายที่ง่ายกว่าก่อน เราจึงควรทำอะไรก็ได้ไม่ให้เราเป็นคนนั้น
การถ่ายวริสท์ช็อทซึ่งเป็นธรรมเนียมของคนรักนาฬิกาก็ทำให้เราตกเป็นเป้าหมายได้เช่นเดียวกัน หากคุณอยู่ในเมืองใหญ่ที่มีผู้คนมากมายที่จริงแล้วก็ไม่ควรจะพยายามถ่ายวริสท์ช็อทเพราะเราไม่รู้ว่าใครเป็นใครและมีใครเฝ้าดูเราอยู่หรือไม่ แต่ถ้าคุณอยู่ในพื้นที่ที่เป็นธรรมชาตินอกเมืองก็อีกเรื่องหนึ่ง ผมทักเตือนแค่นี้แล้วเดี๋ยวคุณก็ดูสภาพหน้างานตามความเหมาะสมเองก็แล้วกันนะครับ
คำแนะนำที่ 8: จงมองคนในแง่ลบไว้ก่อนและอย่าทำตัวมีน้ำใจจนเกินไป
รักดีเวลาอยู่เมืองไทยกับรักดีเวลาอยู่ต่างประเทศเป็นคนละคนกัน ความมีน้ำใจของผมจะลดลงไปประมาณ 50% และมารยาทก็ลดลงไปด้วยราว 25% โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเวลาอยู่ในเมืองที่ขึ้นชื่อเรื่องมิจฉาชีพอย่างปารีสเพราะว่าเขามากันหลายรูปแบบจริงๆ อย่างแก๊งแบบสอบถามนี่เดิมทีผมก็ไม่รู้จัก แต่มีคุณพี่คนไทยจากแบรนด์หนึ่งที่ไปทำงานปารีสเป็นประจำเตือนว่า “ถ้าคุณรักดีออกไปข้างนอกแล้วมีคนมาให้กรอกแบบสอบถาม นั่นคือมิจฉาชีพนะคะ” พูดเสร็จ เดินไป 2 ไฟแดง เจอเลยครับ แก๊งแบบสอบถามตัวจริง ล้อมหน้าล้อมหลังเราทันทีเลย ดังนั้น หากไม่แน่ใจว่าใครมาดีมาร้ายก็ให้ตีเป็นโจรไว้ก่อน ปฏิเสธทุกสิ่งและปัดทุกอย่างเพื่อเอาตัวเองออกมาจากจุดนั้น ไม่ต้องห่วงเรื่องมารยาทหรืออะไรในเวลานี้ทั้งสิ้น
พวกที่อ้างว่าเป็นตำรวจนอกเครื่องแบบนี่ก็ตัวดีเหมือนกัน ท้าให้ไปคุยกันบนโรงพักให้จบไปเลยดีกว่า เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2023 มีนักข่าวอาวุโสชาวไทยท่านหนึ่งเดินอยู่ริมเลคที่เจนีวาช่วงงาน Watches and Wonders แล้วก็มีผู้ชายเข้ามาบอกว่าเป็นตำรวจนอกเครื่องแบบ จะขอตรวจเงินสดที่อยู่ในกระเป๋าว่าแลกมาจากแหล่งที่ผิดกฎหมายหรือไม่ ซึ่งฟังอย่างไรก็ไม่เมคเซนส์เพราะไม่มีใครสามารถบอกได้ว่าธนบัตรใบใดมาจากที่ใดหรอก ดังนั้นคุณผู้อ่านทุกท่านจะไปเมืองใดก็ลองทำการบ้านหาข้อมูลดูด้วยว่ามิจฉาชีพในย่านนั้นมีมุกอะไรบ้างจะได้ระวังตัวไว้ตั้งแต่เนิ่นๆ ครับ
คำแนะนำที่ 9: ศึกษาเรื่องเงื่อนไขและวิธีการขอคืนภาษีก่อนถึงเวลาที่ต้องทำจริง
เงื่อนไขและวิธีการขอคืนภาษีของแต่ละประเทศย่อมมีรายละเอียดที่แตกต่างกันซึ่งเป็นหน้าที่ที่คุณจะต้องทำความเข้าใจในขณะที่ซื้อของหรือก่อนออกจากประเทศหรือเขตภาษีนั้นๆ เพื่อที่คุณจะได้ทำตามขั้นตอนครบถ้วนและได้เงินภาษีคืนตามที่ตั้งใจ หากมีอะไรที่ไม่แน่ใจก็ขอให้พยายามหาคำตอบตั้งแต่เนิ่นๆ ดีกว่าไปลนอยู่ที่สนามบินตอนจะต้องรีบขึ้นเครื่อง โดยทั่วไปตามเว็บต่างๆ จะมีคนเขียนแนะนำอยู่แล้วว่าประเทศนี้ทำอย่างไร ประเทศนั้นทำอย่างไร เคาน์เตอร์อยู่ตรงจุดใดของสนามบิน ของใหญ่หรือของที่ต้องโหลดเข้ากระเป๋าเช็คอินเคลมอย่างไร ของเล็กที่ถือขึ้นเครื่องเคลมอย่างไร ของมูลค่าสูงเคลมอย่างไร ฯลฯ
สิ่งหนึ่งที่เหมือนกันทุกประเทศเป็นสากล คือ สินค้าที่จะขอคืนภาษีได้นั้นจะต้องยังอยู่ในสภาพใหม่ อยู่ในบรรจุภัณฑ์ที่ควรจะมี และยังไม่ได้เริ่มใช้งานในประเทศที่ซื้อของนั้น เรื่องนี้คนไทยยังเข้าใจผิดกันอยู่มากเพราะคิดว่าซื้อแล้วใช้ได้เลย แค่ต้องเอาออกนอกประเทศเขา ซึ่งเป็นความเข้าใจที่ไม่ถูกต้อง อย่างศุลกากรสวิสนี่ผมเคยเห็นกับตามาแล้วว่าเขาจะไม่ยอมคืนภาษีนาฬิกาให้คุณลุงคุณป้าคนไทยในแถวข้างหน้าผมเพราะว่านาฬิกาไม่ได้อยู่ในกล่อง (แต่ผมอยู่ถัดมาหลายคิวจึงมองไม่เห็นว่านาฬิกาอยู่บนข้อมือเลยหรือไม่) ดีที่ว่ากล่องนาฬิกาก็ยังอยู่กับตัวตรงนั้น ไม่ได้ใส่กระเป๋าที่โหลดเข้าใต้เครื่อง ไกด์คนไทยของกลุ่มเขาจึงเข้าไปช่วยเจรจาจนเจ้าหน้าที่ยอมประทับตราในเอกสารคืนภาษีให้พร้อมกำชับอีก 2-3 รอบว่าวันหลังนาฬิกาจะต้องยังอยู่ในกล่องนะ
คำแนะนำที่ 10: ทำความเข้าใจเรื่องดิวตี้ฟรีอีกครั้ง

If you are reading this web site, it means that watches play an important role in your life. Whatever you choose to wear, you would pick a watch to match, or perhaps it is the other way around where you decide on a watch first then the clothes to suit it. It therefore comes as no surprise that when you travel, you want to bring certain watches with you, with the intention to take a few wristshots against scenic backdrops and such.
With the annual peak travel season now approaching for many people, I decided to write this article as a practical guide for those who will be having a vacation during the New Year holidays. That said, the advice shared here is equally applicable to travels at other times of the year, as well as to those who have to go on professional or business trips. And here are my 10 considerations for watch enthusiasts, before you pack your bags, while you are travelling, and when you are about to return to your home country …
Tip #1: Never travel with a watch that is irreplaceable
Our watches are scratches and banged up even when we are home. Travelling, which involves handling luggage, changing accommodation, and navigating unfamiliar environments, naturally increases the risk of damage or loss. This is before even considering the possibility of theft, which we regularly see reported in the news. Whether you are travelling to a country that is considered safe or otherwise, you should avoid wearing your most cherished watch or one that cannot be replaced. Heirloom pieces inherited from parents or grandparents should be left at home, stored securely in a safe, where they can be preserved and enjoyed for many years to come.
Tip #2: Consider the environment you will be exposed to
Leather strap watches are arguably the least suitable option for leisure travel. Exposure to water, rain, snow, or even hot and humid conditions can quickly turn a leather strap into a liability, forcing you to remove and store the watch. Bracelets, rubber straps and fabric straps generally offer greater convenience and versatility. That said, if your trip is work-related and requires formal attire, it is understandable to opt for a leather strap dress watch instead. Ultimately, choose a watch whose style and construction suit both the nature of your trip and the environment you will encounter.
Tip #3: Avoid travelling with multiple watches
Many watch enthusiasts travel with one watch on the wrist while carrying two or three more in the bag to switch as photo opportunities arise. I do not support this practice, as the pictures you get will unlikely justify the increased risk of loss. Carrying more than one watch may also put you in a difficult position with the customs authorities in your destination country. It can be a problem as well when returning to Thailand, if that is where you are based. Even if you truthfully claim that the watch was purchased domestically, you may still be liable for import duty if you cannot produce the original receipt. A photograph of the receipt is not accepted, only the original document is valid (yes, we formally asked the Customs Department, on record), and nobody carries these with them, let alone remembering where they put them in the first place.
If you must travel with multiple watches, such as when attending a brand event or participating in a collectors’ gathering, you should complete the necessary export documentation before leaving Thailand and declare the items upon arrival in your destination country. This ensures that, upon returning, you will not face any issue as the items are already well documented. Do not assume that Swiss-made watches can be brought freely into Switzerland. In practice, it is not that straightforward, as watches exported for sale abroad have not been subject to Swiss domestic tax. In 2019, a European journalist was fined by Swiss customs for carrying multiple watches into Switzerland while attending Baselworld, for example, and he graciously wrote a cautionary article afterwards to save other watch collectors from making the same mistake.
Tip #4: Bring a jacket for the sake of utility
Bear with me here. A jacket serves several purposes. In addition to providing warmth and protection from wind, it also helps protect your watch from scratches, to a certain extent. During a flight, someone may accidentally bump into your wrist, or you may whack it against a hard surface in your sleep. Watches are also prone to scratches when handling luggage, whether on conveyor belts, trolleys, vehicles, trains, or the hotel rooms. A jacket provides a first layer of protection, often without you even realising it. When walking outdoors, it also helps to conceal your watch and makes you less conspicuous to potential criminals. Naturally, the thickness of the jacket should be appropriate to the climate and season of your destination.
Tip #5: Store your watch in a pouch and put it inside your hand luggage before security screening
Airport security procedures vary widely depending on protocol and equipment. Some airports no longer require liquids to be separated, asking only for electronic devices to be laid out on a tray, while some require neither to be removed. There are even airports where passengers are no longer required to remove jackets. Conversely, many airports still follow the more traditional procedures of having everything out.
In some cases, the rules vary even within the same airport, depending on the scanner model for the particular lane you walk into. At Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, for example, fast-track lanes still require electronic devices to be removed, while regular lanes upstairs no longer do. Similarly, Frankfurt Airport operates a mix of both systems, depending on the checkpoint. Zurich Airport is among the strictest – I have personally been asked to remove all cameras from my bag, not only the customary laptop and phone, on the basis that they are electronic devices.
Mechanical watches are not electronic devices, but they are made of metal. While most airports no longer require watches to be removed and placed in trays, some still do. To avoid all uncertainty, it is best to place your watch in a protective pouch and put it inside your hand luggage or backpack. This reduces the risk of being instructed to place it in a tray later, where it could be scratched by careless handling, dropped, knocked, or even stolen while the tray moves ahead of you and you are still in the scanner.
Tip #6: Hotels are not always safe
Hotel safes are provided for convenience and come with no guarantee of security. Whether or not to use them depends on the level of trust you place in the establishment. Before using a safe for the first time, test the locking and unlocking process to familiarise yourself with the procedure and to ensure the safe’s battery is still good enough for it to function properly. The last thing you want is a safe that closes but will not reopen. If you travel with only one watch, as recommended above, this concern largely disappears, as the watch will always remain on your wrist.
On a somewhat related note, key card sleeves displaying the hotel name can be convenient, but discard the ones with your room number written on them. If such a sleeve is lost and found by the wrong person, they will then have immediate access to your room. A sleeve without the room number, by contrast, reveals only the hotel name. No further harm can come if it is picked up even by a criminal.
Tip #7: Stay alert while walking
Travellers often walk with their eyes glued to the phone for navigation, which significantly increases vulnerability to theft. While tourists will inevitably stand out to some degree due to appearance or clothing, avoiding constant attention to your screen allows you to observe your surroundings more effectively and spot suspicious behaviour early. Criminals naturally choose easier targets, so anything that reduces your apparent vulnerability is beneficial.
To this end, I must remind every watch lover that the act of taking wristshots paints you as a target. Please avoid this urge to snap in busy urban areas if you can, as you cannot know who may be watching. Things are of course different in the countryside or the nature where you are more isolated. I am not banning wristshots so to speak, because I take them too, but do use your judgement here.
Tip #8: Assume negative intent and avoid being Mr. Nice Guy
I am a different person when I am home and when I travel. I am like 50% less courteous and 25% less polite, especially when I am in a place where tourists are known to be heavily targeted like Paris. There are just too many varieties of them. I did not know about the so-called clipboard scam, for example, but I was warned about it by a Thai lady who travelled to Paris routinely in her work for a particular luxury brand. Basically, she told me to just say no if someone approached and asked me to fill a questionnaire because that would be a con. Then I ran into a bunch of these clipboard scammers only two blocks away from our hotel, who then proceeded to swarm me, but I knew better. So if you are unsure of someone’s intentions, assume the worst, refuse every offer, and remove yourself from the situation without having to care if you looked rude or not doing so.
And then there are those who pretend to be plainclothes police. Offer to continue any conversation at a police station if you must. In 2023, a senior Thai journalist was walking near the Lake Geneva during Watches and Wonders. She was approached by a man claiming to be an undercover officer who asked to inspect her cash to see if she changed money at an unauthorised establishment. It simply did not make sense as you cannot identify the source of banknotes that way. The best way to protect yourself is to research common scams in your destination in advance so you can remain vigilant.
Tip #9: Study tax refund procedures before you need to actually complete the process
Tax refund conditions and procedures vary by country and must be studied at the time of purchase or before leaving that country or tax area. This ensures that all steps are completed correctly and that you receive the refund you expect. Online resources often provide detailed guidance on procedures, counter locations, and differing protocols for tax refund items that go into a checked luggage and those to be carried on board, including high-value ones.
One universal rule is that goods eligible for tax refunds must be new, unused, and in their original packaging when leaving the country of purchase. A lot of travellers assume, wrongly, that they can use the product right away, and that they would still be able to make the refund so long as the item leaves that country. I have personally witnessed Swiss customs on the verge of refusing a tax refund to an older Thai couple because the watch was no longer in its original packaging, but I was too far back in the line to see whether the watch was actually on the wrist or otherwise carried. Fortunately, the actual box was still with them and not checked in, allowing their tour leader to step in and try to resolve the matter. Eventually, the officer validated the refund, but did so with repeated and firm warnings that the watch must remain in the box for their future claims.
Tip #10: Revisit your understanding of duty free purchases
Duty free shops sell goods without local taxes, but upon bringing those goods into your home country, import duties still apply. For watches brought into Thailand, this includes a 5% import duty followed by a 7% value added tax, regardless of whether the purchase was made at a duty free shop or a regular retailer. The same applies to purchases made at the time of your departure from your home airport. If a watch is brought into the country without paying the required taxes and it later needs to be sent to the country of origin for servicing, you will be required to pay tax anyway because there would be no record of such. It is therefore best to be honest from the outset. Go through the red channel, declare the item and just pay what needs to be paid. This is far preferable to risking substantial penalties if caught bringing the item through the green channel.
