ย้อนทำความรู้จักอีกครั้งหนึ่งกับคอลเลคชั่นแห่งจักรราศีและกลุ่มดาวของ Van Cleef & Arpels

ช่วงเวลาประมาณ 3 สัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมานี้ของผมมีหลายคอนเทนท์ที่ทำให้ผมต้องไปไล่อ่านเรื่องกับดาราศาสตร์ หมู่ดาวและดวงจันทร์ เรื่อยไปจนถึงปฏิทินจันทรคติของทั้งจีนและไทย เพื่อให้มั่นใจว่าความเข้าใจของตนเองนั้นถูกต้องและไม่สับสน จนกระทั่งเมื่อวานนี้ก็ยังไม่วายมีเหตุให้ต้องกลับมาดูเรื่องอะไรบนฟากฟ้าอีกครั้งเมื่อผมได้พบกับสุภาพสตรีชาวฝรั่งเศสท่านหนึ่งที่สวมสร้อยคอ Zodiaque ของ Van Cleef & Arpels โดยบังเอิญ
เราคุยกันครู่หนึ่งเรื่องสร้อยคอคอลเลคชั่นนี้ และเธอยังชมผมด้วยที่ผมสามารถจำนาฬิกา Midnight Zodiaque Lumineux และ Lady Arpels Zodiaque Lumineux จากปี ค.ศ. 2018 ได้ (ก็จะมีนาฬิกาสักกี่รุ่นกันเชียวในโลกนี้ที่เมื่อกดปุ่มแล้วมีหลอดไฟขนาดเล็กติดขึ้นมาตามตำแหน่งของดวงดาวต่างๆ ที่ประกอบกันเป็นกลุ่มดาวของจักรราศีทั้ง 12 ของโลกตะวันตก)
แล้ว Van Cleef & Arpels ซึ่งมีธีมธรรมชาติและธีมดาราศาสตร์เป็นแหล่งรวมของแรงบันดาลใจเรื่อยมาก็นำเรื่องราวของจักรราศีมาถ่ายทอดอย่างจริงจังอีกครั้งช่วงปลายปี ค.ศ. 2021 ในรูปแบบของจิวเวลรี 2 ชุดภายใต้คอลเลคชั่น Zodiaque แต่ว่าไม่ค่อยมีการโปรโมทเท่าใดนักเมื่อเทียบกับคอลเลคชั่นที่โดดเด่นกว่าอย่างเช่น Alhambra และ Frivole
จิวเวลรี Zodiaque ชุดแรกเป็นเหรียญเยลโลว์โกลด์ขนาดเล็กรูปสัญลักษณ์ประจำราศีต่างๆ ในสไตล์นูนต่ำ ตกแต่งเส้นรอบวงด้านนอกด้วยเม็ดบีดจนดูราวกับเป็นเหรียญโบราณ เมื่อพลิกมาทางด้านหลังจะมีตัวอักษรประจำราศีนั้นอยู่ตรงกลางระหว่างเลขโรมัน 2 ชุดซึ่งเป็นการระบุวันที่เริ่มต้นและสิ้นสุดของราศีนั้น
และที่สะกดจิตสะกดใจยิ่งกว่า (แต่ก็มีราคาแพงกว่าด้วยถึง 9 เท่า) ก็คือจิวเวลรี Zodiaque ชุดที่สองซึ่งเป็นเหรียญโรสโกลด์ขนาดใหญ่กว่าชุดแรก ด้านหน้ามีการแกะสลักรูปสัตว์ประจำราศีในรูปลักษณ์สไตล์อาร์ทเดโค บนพื้นหลังที่สื่อถึงธาตุประจำราศีไม่ว่าจะเป็นดิน น้ำ ลมหรือไฟ แต่ว่าชิ้นงานดังกล่าวนี้จะกินพื้นที่เพียงครึ่งหนึ่งหรือไม่เกินสองในสามของด้านหน้าเหรียญเท่านั้น เพราะ Van Cleef & Arpels ต้องการปล่อยพื้นที่โล่งให้คุณได้เห็นแผ่นหินทรงกลมที่แทรกอยู่ตรงกลางเหรียญ
หินที่ Van Cleef & Arpels เลือกใช้นั้นมีสีสันที่สอดคล้องกับธาตุประจำราศีต่างๆ นั่นเอง เช่น โซดาไลท์สีน้ำเงินลายขาวดูราวกับผิวน้ำที่มีฟองคลื่นสำหรับราศีมีนที่เป็นธาตุน้ำ มาลาไคท์ที่มีลวดลายเป็นเอกลักษณ์สำหรับราศีกันย์ซึ่งเป็นธาตุดิน โกลด์ออบซิเดียนประกายทองสำหรับราศีตุลย์ซึ่งเป็นธาตุลม และ เร้ดแจสเปอร์สีร้อนแรงสำหรับราศีสิงห์ซึ่งเป็นธาตุไฟ
ด้านหลังของเหรียญมีการตกแต่งคล้ายกับด้านหน้าแต่มีการฉลุให้เห็นเนื้อหินโดยทั่วไปมากกว่า โดยจะเหลือเนื้อทองตามตำแหน่งที่เป็นตัวอักษรประจำราศีตรงกลาง ชื่อราศีเป็นภาษาลาตินด้านล่าง ขนาบซ้ายและขวาด้วยวันที่เริ่มต้นและสิ้นสุดของราศีนั้นเป็นตัวเลขโรมัน และมีดาว 9 ดวงอยู่ทางด้านบน สวมใส่ด้วยสายโซ่ทองความยาว 90 ซม.
ดีไซน์ทั้ง 2 สไตล์นี้ไม่ได้เพิ่งเกิดขึ้นใหม่ หากเราไปดูในภาพเก่าๆ ของ Van Cleef & Arpels ในยุคเซเวนตีส์ก็จะเห็นเหรียญทองสไตล์เหมือนกับแบบแรกเกือบ 100% อยู่แล้ว ส่วนแบบที่สองนั้นของเดิมก็มีที่คล้ายกัน แต่รายละเอียดของการแกะสลักบนเนื้อทองจะไม่เป็นระดับชั้นอย่างแพรวพราวเท่านี้
Zodiaque อาจจะเป็นจิวเวลรีที่ดูขึงขังและมีความหนักแน่น ไม่ได้ออกแนวหวานแหววหรือสดใสเหมือนกับหลายคอลเลคชั่นของ Van Cleef & Arpels ที่คุณคุ้นเคย แต่ถ้าคุณเห็นผลงานชุดนี้แล้วรู้สึกว่ามันมีพลังอะไรบางอย่างที่ดึงดูดให้คุณเข้าไปพิจารณาแต่ละองค์ประกอบใกล้ๆ เหมือนที่ปลาคู่นั้นในทะเลโซดาไลท์ร้องเรียกผม ผมคิดว่าคุณอาจจะได้พบกับเครื่องรางชิ้นใหม่ที่คุณสามารถหยิบมาสวมใส่ได้ในทุกโอกาสไปอีกยาวนานหลายปีแล้วครับ

Over the past three weeks or so, I have found myself repeatedly delving into topics relating to astronomy, constellations, and the moon, even the Chinese and Thai lunisolar calendars, simply to ensure that my own understanding of these subjects was sound and free from confusion. And yet, as recently as yesterday, I found myself once again looking to the heavens when I happened to meet a French lady who wore a Zodiaque necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels.
We spoke briefly about this collection, and she even complimented me for remembering the Midnight Zodiaque Lumineux and Lady Arpels Zodiaque Lumineux watches from 2018. After all, there are not many timepieces in the world that, with the press of a button, illuminate tiny lights across the dial to trace the Western zodiac constellations.
Van Cleef & Arpels, always inspired by themes of nature and astronomy, returned to the zodiac motif once again in late 2021, interpreting it through two sets of jewellery under the Zodiaque collection. They were not as heavily promoted as the more prominent lines such as Alhambra and Frivole, though.
The first Zodiaque design comprises small yellow gold medals with low-relief zodiac symbols, bordered by delicate gold beading that lends them the look of ancient coins. Turning the piece over reveals the zodiac’s character in the centre, framed by two sets of Roman numerals indicating the dates that mark the beginning and end of the sign.
Even more captivating, and about nine times more expensive, is the second Zodiaque design. This set of larger medals in rose gold feature elaborated, art deco-style engraving on the front. Each one depicts the zodiac animal against a backdrop symbolising its corresponding element: earth, water, air or fire. Interestingly, the design occupies only half or two-thirds of the medal’s surface, leaving open space to reveal a circular stone disk at the centre.
These stones are carefully chosen to reflect the colours associated with each element. For instance, sodalite with its blue-and-white pattern reminiscent of sea foams for Pisces which belongs to the water element; malachite with its distinctive striations for Virgo which belongs to the earth element, golden obsidian for Libra which belongs to the air element; and, red jasper for Leo which belongs to the fire element.
The decorative style of reverse side mirrors that of the front, but it is more openworked to reveal even more of the stone beneath. The zodiac character appears at the centre, its Latin name is below, flanked by Roman numerals showing the sign’s date range, with nine stars adorning the upper portion. Each pendant is paired with a 90 cm gold chain.
Neither design is entirely new. In the archival images from the 1970s, one can see gold medals that look almost identical to the first style. There were also creations that serve as the predecessor of the second style, but with less elaborated and less layered engraving on the gold element.
Zodiaque may come across as bold and commanding, compared to the sweet and playful collections for which Van Cleef & Arpels is better known. Yet, if at first sight, you feel drawn to these pieces, you feel obliged to study each detail more closely, like I was when the twin fish of the sodalite sea called out to me, you may well have found a new talisman: one to accompany you gracefully through many years and occasions to come.
