เราได้จับเรือนจริงของ Vanguard Sfumato Slim จาก Franck Muller เป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อราวเดือนกันยายนปีที่แล้วโดยที่ยังไม่ได้รับฟังจากคนของแบรนด์ถึงเรื่องราวหรือแรงบันดาลใจเบื้องหลังการออกแบบ ซึ่งก็ถือว่าเป็นเรื่องดีเพราะว่าเราสามารถตีความนาฬิการุ่นนี้ได้โดยใช้เพียงความรู้สึกของเราล้วนๆ โดยปราศจากการปรุงแต่งความคิดจากภายนอก

We have tried several Vanguard models over the year and this one really wears differently.

We first handled the Vanguard Sfumato Slim from Franck Muller around September last year, before hearing from the brand’s representatives about the story or inspiration behind the design. In a way, this was liberating, because it allowed us to interpret the watch purely through our own impressions, without any external narrative shaping our thoughts.
The first difference we noticed, even before putting the watch on the wrist, was that this Vanguard features numeral hour markers, creating a rather unusual sense of minimalism. This is unlike most Vanguard models that are not skeletonised which typically display large Arabic numerals, arranged in a radial pattern spreading outward from the centre of the dial. As we tilted the watch under the morning light that streamed through suite window at the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok, we could clearly observe both the gradient effect that shifts from lighter tones at the centre of the dial to darker shades around the outer edge, as well as the sunray finishing across the surface.
However, the moment of truth came when the case of this Vanguard settled comfortably on the wrist. Part of this comfort is due to the slightly curved caseback, while another factor is the hybrid strap with the upper side made from alligator leather and the underside in rubber. This combination does not only suit the tropical climate of Thailand but also gives a subtly sporty feel on the skin while also retaining the refined and elegant character expected of a luxury watch.
The Vanguard Sfumato Slim is offered in stainless steel or rose gold, in a case size that Franck Muller refers to as V41. The actual dimensions measure 41 × 49.95 mm, with a thickness of only 9.1 mm, making it about 3 mm thinner than similar Vanguard models. The name Sfumato is an Italian term referring to a Renaissance painting technique in which colours are smudged so that certain areas appear lighter while others remain darker. This effect can be clearly seen on the dial, which is available in several colours including green, blue, grey and brown.
According to Franck Muller, the dial is supposed to evoke the twilight ambiance in an Italian coastal resort town, when the boundaries between sky and sea begin to merge, and time seems to slow slightly. One might say that the designers were already packing their bags in their mind for a vacation. Nevertheless, with the refined and impeccably composed appearance of the Vanguard Sfumato Slim, this watch remains an appealing choice both for relaxed days off and for more formal occasions at work.
