Patek Philippe watches are generally produced in classic proportions that are not overly large, so if a case measures as much as 47 mm, it almost certainly houses a grand complication of some kind, as is the case with the Ref. 6105G-001 or Celestial Sunrise and Sunset.
This model represents the next stage in the evolution of the astronomical Ref. 6102, which was already distinguished by its star chart display. In this iteration, however, the Ref. 6105 also becomes the first Patek Philippe watch capable of indicating the times of sunrise and sunset in Geneva across the different seasons throughout the year. This is achieved through the addition of a hand pointing towards the lower right for sunrise, and another pointing towards the lower left for sunset.
The ingenuity of Patek Philippe lies in the way the date numerals around the outermost periphery of the dial are also used to indicate sunrise and sunset times. A white curved scale further enhances readability to an accuracy of approximately 20 minutes. For instance, in the accompanying image on the opposite page, the hands indicate that the sun rises at around 09:15 and sets at approximately 17:30. Meanwhile, the central area enclosed within an oval frame displays a star chart representing the night sky as seen from Geneva on that particular evening.
The watch is powered by the self-winding Calibre 240 C LU CL LCSO, which comprises as many as 426 components. It required five years of development, and resulted in six patents to protect the innovations.
Beyond the mechanics, the external design of the Ref. 6105G-001 is equally noteworthy. The 47 mm white gold case features no lugs whatsoever, while the large black composite strap appears to integrate seamlessly with the case. The strap is finished with an X-shaped pattern on its upper surface, echoing the same motif found along the flanks of the case. Altogether, these elements convey a distinctly modern character that stands in marked contrast to the more traditional identity typically associated with Patek Philippe grand complication watches.
