กำลังลานสำรองย่อมไม่ใช่สิ่งแรกที่คนนึกถึงเวลาพูดชื่อ Panerai แต่แบรนด์ที่มีต้นกำเนิดในอิตาลีแบรนด์นี้ก็มีประวัติการใช้เครื่องนาฬิกากำลังลานสำรอง 8 วันของ Angelus ตั้งแต่กลางยุคทศวรรษที่ 1950 เพื่อลดจำนวนครั้งที่ทหารต้องไขลานนาฬิกาขณะปฏิบัติภารกิจ
และในยุคสมัยปัจจุบัน Panerai ก็มีการรื้อฟื้นแง่มุมสำคัญในประวัติศาสตร์นี้ด้วยเครื่องนาฬิกากำลังลานสำรอง 8 วันแบบอินเฮ้าส์รุ่นแรกซึ่งก็คือคาลิเบอร์ P.2002 ในปี ค.ศ. 2005 แต่ใครเลยจะคิดว่า Panerai จะไปถึงจุดที่มีเครื่องนาฬิกากำลังลานสำรอง 31 วันหรือ 1 เดือนเต็มเช่นใน Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 รุ่นใหม่ล่าสุดนี้ ซึ่งจะผลิตเป็นจำนวนจำกัดเพียง 200 เรือน และวางจำหน่ายที่บูติคอย่างเป็นทางการของ Panerai เท่านั้น
PAM01631 ทำงานด้วยเครื่องนาฬิกาไขลานสไตล์สเกเลตั้นรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ P.2031/S ซึ่งเป็นผลลัพธ์แห่งการพัฒนานาน 7 ปี มีเมนสปริงรวมความยาวถึง 3.3 เมตรใน 4 แบเรลด้วยกัน รวมระยะเวลาการทำงานจริง 36 วัน แต่ Panerai ก็เลือกที่จะจำกัดการทำงานไว้ที่ช่วง 31 วันตรงกลางที่ลานมีกำลังสม่ำเสมอที่สุดเท่านั้น ไม่ลากไปจนถึงช่วงปลายลานก่อนลานจะหมด และไม่ใช้ช่วงต้นลานที่กำลังสูงเกินไป ทั้งยังมีกลไกควบคุมการปล่อยพลังงานอย่างสม่ำเสมอด้วย
นาฬิการุ่นนี้มีเข็มบอกกำลังลานสำรองเป็นรูปหัวลูกศรสีขาวอยู่ทางด้านล่างขวาของหน้าปัดเพื่อเตือนให้คุณไขลานนาฬิกาเดือนละครั้ง โดยคุณจำเป็นต้องหมุนเม็ดมะยมเพียง 128 รอบเท่านั้นเพื่อให้ได้ลานเต็ม 31 วันดังกล่าว เท่ากับว่าการหมุนเม็ดมะยมเพียงประมาณ 4 รอบก็ได้ลาน 1 วันแล้ว จานวันที่แบบโพลาไรซ์ที่จะแสดงให้เห็นตัวเลขวันที่เฉพาะที่ตำแหน่งหน้าต่างวันที่เท่านั้นซึ่งเป็นอะไรที่หลักแหลมมาก

Power reserve is certainly not the first thing most people think of when the name Panerai is mentioned. Nevertheless, the Italian-rooted watchmaker has a longstanding history of using 8-day Angelus movements dating back to the mid-1950s. The idea was the time was to reduce the frequency with which military personnel needed to wind their watches while on duty.
In the modern era, Panerai revived this important aspect of their heritage with the launch of their first in-house 8-day movement, the Calibre P.2002, in 2005. Few, however, would have expected Panerai to eventually reach the point of creating a movement capable of delivering a 31-day or one-month power reserve as seen in the new Panerai Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631. The watch will be produced in a limited edition of just 200 pieces and sold exclusively through official Panerai boutiques.
The PAM01631 is powered by the skeletonised hand-winding Calibre P.2031/S which is a result of seven years of development. The movement contains a total mainspring length of 3.3 metres, distributed across four barrels. Technically, this is capable for up to 36 days of operation. However, Panerai deliberately restricts usable performance to the 31-day period in the middle where torque delivery remains at its most stable, avoiding both the excessively strong output of the fully wound state and the weakened performance near the end of the power reserve. The movement also incorporates a mechanism designed to regulate energy delivery consistently throughout.
The watch features a white arrow-shaped power reserve indicator at the lower right portion of the dial, reminding the wearer to wind the movement just once per month. Impressively, only 128 turns of the crown are required to achieve the full 31-day reserve, meaning that roughly four turns are sufficient to generate one day of autonomy. Also very clever is the use of a polarised date display, in which the numeral becomes visible only through the date aperture itself.
All of this is housed within a 44 mm case, crafted from Panerai’s proprietary Goldtech alloy – its added copper and platinum contents preserve the rich red tone of the gold over time and improve scratch resistance compared to conventional gold alloys. The watch is supplied with both a black alligator leather strap and an additional black rubber strap. It is delivered in a luxurious wooden presentation box befitting a special timepiece of this calibre.
