ชื่อ Midnight มีที่ไปที่มาอย่างไรครับ
Midnight ไม่ได้เป็นชื่อของคอลเลคชั่นนะครับ แต่ว่าเป็นชื่อที่ Van Cleef & Arpels ใช้เรียกรูปทรงตัวเรือนที่เราเปิดตัวในปี ค.ศ. 2007 กับนาฬิการุ่น Midnight in Paris นับแต่นั้นมา ตัวเรือนทรงนี้ได้กลายมาเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งงานประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาของเรา และนำเสนอความแตกต่างด้วยเส้นสายที่เรียบร้อยและเกลี้ยงเกลา ขอบตัวเรือนและขาตัวเรือนก็เปิดพื้นที่ให้หน้าปัดได้หายใจเต็มที่อีกด้วย ความเรียบง่ายของเส้นสายเหล่านี้ถูกจับคู่กับรายละเอียดของวัสดุอย่างเช่นทองขัดเงาและทองขัดซาตินที่ล้อเล่นกับแสงและตอกย้ำถึงความสง่างามของขององค์ประกอบทั้งหมดครับ

เราต้องการให้ Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune เป็นนาฬิกาที่สานต่อเรื่องราวของคอลเลคชั่น Jour Nuit ที่ถือกำเนิดขึ้นเมื่อปี 2008 พร้อมกับการนำเสนอคอมพลิเคชั่นดั้งเดิมของวงการนาฬิกา นั่นก็คือมูนเฟส ไอเดียตั้งแต่เริ่มแรกของโปรเจคนี้คือการทำให้ดวงจันทร์มีลักษณะที่เปลี่ยนแปลงได้ ไม่เหมือนในนาฬิกา Lady และ Lady Arpels Jour Nuit รุ่นก่อนหน้าที่ดวงจันทร์เป็นแบบประดับเพชรและมีลักษณะเต็มดวงตลอดเวลา ในขณะเดียวกันดวงจันทร์นี้ก็จะต้องโคจรตามรอบกลางคืนและกลางวันได้ด้วย
ดูจากภายนอกเหมือนจะไม่มีอะไรมาก แต่เราเชื่อว่ากลไกข้างในจะต้องผ่านการคำนวณมาอย่างมากมายแน่นอน
ถูกต้องที่สุดครับ! Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune ทำงานได้ด้วยจานหมุน 2 จานที่ทำงานร่วมกัน แต่ต่างก็มีจังหวะเป็นของตนเอง จานกลางคืน/กลางคืนที่มีดวงอาทิตย์และดวงจันทร์นั้นจะหมุนครบ 1 รอบในเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง
ส่วนอีกจานหนึ่งที่อยู่ข้างใต้นั้นจะหมุนครบ 1 รอบในเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง 16 นาที 27 วินาที เราดูด้วยตาจะดูแทบไม่ออกเลย แต่รูปทรงของดวงจันทร์ตรงมูนเฟสจะค่อยๆ เปลี่ยนไปวันละเล็กน้อย และเพราะว่าเรามีกลไกออโตมาตอนในตัว เราจึงสามารถดูมูนเฟสได้ด้วยแม้ว่าจะเป็นช่วงเวลากลางวัน เราต้องใช้เวลาวิจัยและพัฒนานานถึง 4 ปีเลยนะครับกว่าที่นาฬิการุ่นนี้จะสำเร็จเป็นเรือนเช่นนี้
คุณทำอย่างไรให้เครื่องมีพลังงานพอสำหรับออโตมาตอนนี้ครับ

ปีนี้เรามีการปรับปรุงนาฬิการุ่นเดิมของเราอีกรุ่นหนึ่ง นั่นก็คือ Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs นาฬิการุ่นนี้เปิดตัวเป็นครั้งแรกในปี 2018 โดยมีตัวเรือนโรสโกลด์และหน้าปัดสีดำ และในครั้งนี้เราได้พัฒนานาฬิการุ่นนี้ด้วยเครื่องรุ่นใหม่ที่มีกำลังลานสำรองยาวนานกว่าเดิมด้วย

Reflecting on recent past, there probably has not been a single year in which Van Cleef & Arpels failed to present something that left us genuinely astonished at Watches and Wonders Geneva. Two years ago, we also had the opportunity to meet the Maison’s Head of Research and Development for Watchmaking Rainer Bernard quite by chance. Our extensive conversations at the time have convinced us that he is the ideal person to answer our questions regarding this year’s new Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune and Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs timepieces.
It is not every year that Midnight watches are proposed front and center like at this latest edition of WWG.
At Van Cleef & Arpels, we care about creating pieces that speak to as many people as possible. This commitment to universality is expressed both in our dials, whose stories draw on the Maison’s defining themes to convey emotion, and in the aesthetics of our cases. The Lady Arpels cases celebrate the sparkle of diamonds, surrounding the scenes on the dial with a luminous halo meanwhile the Midnight cases are distinguished by understated lines that step back to let the story take center stage.
During the development of the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune and of our traveler’s watch the Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs, we saw a perfect match of these stories with the Midnight cases. We developed them specifically for each watch and hope, by doing so, to speak to anyone who feels touched by the enchanting worlds they express.
What inspired the name “Midnight”?
Midnight is not the name of a collection, but the name Van Cleef & Arpels gave to the shape of the case, first introduced in 2007, and especially with the Midnight in Paris timepiece. It has since become a hallmark of the Maison’s watchmaking and is distinguished by its refined, clean lines. The bezel and horns give the dial plenty of room to breathe. The restraint of these lines is paired with effects of material, polished and satin-finished gold, that play with the light and reinforce the elegance of the ensemble.
The Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune is simply incredible and poetic at the same time. What was the idea in the beginning?
With the Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune, we wanted to continue the story of the Jour Nuit collection born in 2008, while revisiting a traditional watchmaking complication: the moon phase. The initial idea, right from the beginning of the project, was to animate the moon, representing with diamonds on the Lady and Lady Arpels Jour Nuit watches always as a full moon, and to do so while the moon is following its night and day cycle.
The setup looks simple from the outside, but we are sure that a lot of math was going on beneath the surface.
Exactly! The Midnight Jour Nuit Phase de Lune watch comes to life thanks to the joint operation of two rotating discs, each moving at its own pace. The night and day disc with the sun and the moon completes one rotation in 24 hours. The second one below describes a rotation in 24 hours, 16 minutes and 27 seconds. It is almost imperceptible, but it transfigures the moon day after day to indicate the moon phase. Thanks to the automaton, the moon phase can also be revealed in its current phase during the day. It took us four years of research and development to give life to this creation!
How do you ensure sufficient power for this animation?
By pushing the animation button on the case, you are charging indeed a spring which stores the energy required to power the automaton. This energy is spread into the gear train in order to add a 360 degrees rotation on both discs. In this way, you can ask for the moon as often as you wish, it will always stay correct afterwards. After a full rotation which takes about 10 seconds, the night and day disc moved forward by a tiny angle corresponding to 10 seconds worth of change. Same is true for the moon phase itself, which changed also a tiny bit.
Let’s talk also about the new Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs.
This year, we are revisiting another of our timepieces: the Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs. First created in 2018, also in rose gold but with a black dial at the time, we redeveloped the whole watch with the entire mechanism, increasing also the power reserve.
We worked also on an innovative enamel dial: in function of the light intensity and the viewers observing angle, it shows nuances from black to shimmering amber-brown tones, captivating effects of translucency, brought to life by a relief décor. By combining the best of both crafts, glass making and enameling, we were able to create extremely fine and sturdy enamels. It is a great opportunity for us to highlight our expertise in métiers d’art and especially in enamel, which we master internally for a long time.
Does it belong to the universe of love, as in myself is here and my love is in another time zone?
The Midnight Heure d’ici & Heure d’ailleurs showcases a poetic interpretation of two different time zones: an invitation to wander and open a window to the world. Travel has always been an integral part of Van Cleef & Arpels’ identity. But with our timepieces, we interpret different feelings. This watch indicates the time here and the time somewhere else. Maybe, it is where your friends are, or your family, or a lover. We express a large palette of emotions!
