เราเองก็ไม่อยากเชื่อว่าทำงานในวงการนี้มานานถึง 10 ปีและคุ้นเคยกับแบรนด์ Bovet มายาวนานด้วย แต่ว่าเราไม่เคยได้สัมภาษณ์คุณปาสคาล ราฟฟีผู้เป็นเจ้าของแบรนด์จนกระทั่งวันนี้ คุณปาสคาลเดินทางมายังกรุงเทพมหานครเพื่อพบปะกับสื่อต่างๆ และพูดคุยเรื่องกลยุทธ์ในการขายของ Bovet จากนี้ไป และเราก็ใช้ช่วงเวลานี้พูดคุยเรื่องผลิตภัณฑ์ใหม่ๆ ธีมที่นำเสนอ และคุณสมบัติที่ทำให้ Bovet แตกต่างจากแบรนด์ระดับไฮเอ็นด์อื่นๆ ด้วย
ทำไมคุณจึงเลิกทำบูติคของตัวเองแล้วเปลี่ยนไปขายผ่านรีเทลเลอร์ครับ
ผมขอถามคุณอย่างหนึ่ง การที่ผมมาที่นี่ในวันนี้ นั่นหมายความว่ามีอะไรบางอย่างที่มันไม่เวิร์คใช่ไหม สิ่งต่างๆ ที่ผมทำตั้งแต่โควิดมาจนถึงตอนนี้ล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นการลงทุนของผมเอง ผมลงทุนเปิดบูติค Bovet ที่สิงคโปร์ ที่เกสรและหลังจากนั้นก็ที่โตเกียว แต่เมื่อมาถึงจุดหนึ่ง คุณก็ตระหนักได้ว่าคุณไม่สามารถทำอะไรทุกอย่างได้เอง แม้ว่าจะมีทีมช่วยก็ตาม คุณจึงมาถึงจุดที่ต้องถามตนเองว่าคุณสามารถทำทุกอย่างในชีวิตเองได้หรือไม่ คำตอบก็คือไม่
จริงอยู่ว่านักสะสมอาจจะรู้สึกสับสน แต่ขอให้เชื่อว่าถ้าแต่เดิมมันดีอยู่ผมก็ไม่มีทางเปลี่ยนหรอก ดังนั้นขอให้คุณช่วยอธิบายให้นักสะสมเข้าใจด้วย นี่คือเครื่องยืนยันถึงความจริงใจ ความโปร่งใสและความมีจริยธรรมในทุกสิ่งที่เราทำที่ Bovet และผมรู้สึกว่าผมจำเป็นต้องมาพูดเรื่องนี้ด้วยตนเอง ทำไมน่ะหรือ ถ้าคุณเคารพคน คุณจะใช้ความพยายามในการแสดงออก ถ้าคุณจริงใจ คุณจะพูดตรงๆ และนี่คือเหตุผลว่าทำไมเราจึงนั่งอยู่ด้วยกันที่นี้ในวันนี้ครับ
ความพิเศษของ Bovet อยู่ที่อะไรครับ
ลองคิดดูนะครับ แบรนด์ที่มีครอบครัวเป็นเจ้าของ มีศักยภาพในการผลิตชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ ด้วยตัวเอง มีประวัติศาสตร์ยาวนานกว่า 200 ปี และมีส่วนร่วมสร้างสรรค์งานประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาอย่างแท้จริง ใครเป็นคนคิดค้นฝาหลังใสในอุตสาหกรรมนี้ครับ เอดัวร์ โบเวต์ เขาเปิดฝาหลังขึ้นมาเพื่อชื่นชมเครื่องนาฬิกา หลังจากนั้นศิลปะตกแต่งต่างๆ ก็เข้ามาเป็นส่วนสำคัญของแบรนด์ Bovet สิ่งที่สามคือการคิดค้นกลไกต่างๆ สิทธิบัตรคุ้มครองฟลายแบ็คโครโนกราฟฉบับแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1889 ก็เป็นของ Bovet ดังนั้นคุณจึงเห็นได้ว่าแบรนด์ของเราผลักดันทุกอย่างไปอีกขีดขั้นหนึ่งเสมอในทุกโอกาสที่เป็นไปได้
เหมือนอย่างที่คุณเพิ่งทำไปกับ Récital 28 Prowess 1 …
ในช่วงระยะเวลา 3 ศตรวรรษของการประดิษฐ์นาฬิกานี้ไม่เคยมีนาฬิกาจักรกลเรือนใดแก้ไขปัญหาเรื่องเดย์ไลท์เซฟวิ่งไทม์ได้ ผลงานรุ่นนี้ถูกคิดขึ้นในช่วงโควิด ตอนนั้นผมต้องคุยกับคนผ่าน Zoom ผ่าน Teams และโปรแกรมทั้งหลาย และครั้งหนึ่งผมสับสนว่าโตเกียวกี่โมงแล้วกันแน่ เพื่อนผมก็มีผิดด้วยเหมือนกัน เขาคิดว่าสวิตเซอร์แลนด์เป็นเวลา 09.00 น. แต่จริงๆ มันคือ 10.00 น. แล้วเพราะเป็นช่วงที่มีเดย์ไลท์เซฟวิ่งไทม์ นี่คือที่มาของไอเดียของการจัดการกับปัญหาเรื่องเดย์ไลท์เซฟวิ่งไทม์ของเราในทันที
ทำไม Bovet จึงมีนาฬิกาแบบเวิลด์ไทม์และนาฬิกาแบบหลายไทม์โซนหลายรุ่นครับ
สองเหตุผลนะครับคือประวัติศาสตร์ของแบรนด์ Bovet เองและความเชื่อส่วนตัวของผมเอง เอดัวร์ โบเวต์เดินทางจากเฟลอริเยร์ไปลอนดอนและไปถึงเมืองจีน [เพื่อขายนาฬิกา] เขาเดินทางด้วยการใช้ม้า การเดินและนั่งเรือ เขาได้เห็นแผนที่โลก สัมผัสธรรมชาติ ได้กลิ่น เห็นสีและทำความคุ้นเคยกับวัฒนธรรมต่างๆ ดังนั้นการเดินทางจึงอยู่ในดีเอ็นเอของแบรนด์ เหตุผลที่สองคือการที่ผมศึกษาเรื่องกฎหมายระหว่างประเทศและภาษาต่างๆ ดังนั้น สำหรับตัวผมเองแล้ว ผมมองว่ามันเป็นเรื่องสำคัญมากๆ ที่เราจะเปิดใจรับวัฒนธรรมอื่นๆ การเดินทาง การเปิดใจ การรับฟังผู้อื่นและการให้เกียรติผู้อื่นเป็นสิ่งสำคัญในชีวิตครับ
Bovet ทำนาฬิกากลุ่มบีสโปคมากน้อยเพียงใด
คุณจะคิดไม่ถึงเลยครับ งานบีสโปคนั้นอยู่ในสายเลือดของ Bovet มาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1822 ปัจจุบันนี้งานบีสโปคคิดเป็น 36% ของงานผลิตของเรา ผมบอกคุณได้เลยครับว่าเวลาผมเจอกับนักสะสมบางคนเขาก็ไม่รู้เรื่องนี้ แต่พอเขาได้เห็นงานแกะสลัก ภาพวาด ภาพคน ภาพทิวทัศน์ต่างๆ ในคอลเลคชั่นของเรา เขาถามเลยว่านี่ Bovet ยังทำงานแบบนี้อยู่อีกหรือ แล้วเราก็เริ่มการพูดคุยและอธิบาย งานบีสโปคเป็นกระบวนการจริงจังที่ผมจะต้องเรนเดอร์ภาพให้ดูหลังจากที่รับฟังไอเดียจากลูกค้าแล้ว ผมมีหน้าที่ต้องเสนอสเกทช์สัก 5, 6 หรือ 7 แบบแล้วเราก็ปรับแต่งด้วยกัน กระบวนการนี้อาจใช้เวลา 1 เดือนก็ได้หรืออาจใช้เวลา 2 ปีก็ได้ อย่างโปรเจค Rolls Royce Boat Tail นั้นใช้เวลานานถึง 4 ปีครับเพราะว่าเป็นโปรเจคขนาดใหญ่มากๆ
Bovet มีสายนาฬิกาแบบเบรซเลทเป็นครั้งแรกในนาฬิการุ่น Récital 12 และเราอยากรู้ว่าสายรุ่นนี้มีต้นกำเนิดในการออกแบบจากอะไรครับ
เป็นคำถามที่น่าสนใจครับ ผมใฝ่ฝันอยากจะมีนาฬิกาแบบสายเบรซเลทมาโดยตลอดนะ แต่ผมก็นึกไม่ออกว่าจะออกแบบอย่างไรดี หน้าตามันควรจะเป็นอย่างไร แล้วเมื่อ 3 ปีก่อนผมก็บอกตัวเองว่า ปาสคาล ชื่อ Bovet มี 5 ตัวอักษร และตัวอักษรตรงกลางคือตัววี ง่ายๆ อย่างนั้นเลยครับ แต่บางครั้งคุณต้องใช้เวลาคิด 3, 4 หรือ 5 ปี แต่บางครั้งแค่ 2 นาทีคุณก็ได้คำตอบแล้ว นี่คือไอเดีย และผมอยากได้เส้นที่เป็นอินฟินิตี้ คือเมื่อคุณใส่นาฬิกาบนข้อมือแล้วคุณจะเห็นว่าเส้นมันข้ามต่อเนื่องกันไปอีกข้างหนึ่งแบบนี้
Bovet มีพนักงานกี่คนครับ
98 คนครับ รวมทั้งช่าง คนที่ออฟฟิศและบริษัทสาขาแล้ว 98 คนนี้คือรวมบริษัทสาขาที่สหรัฐอเมริกาและญี่ปุ่นด้วย ทุกคนทั้งครอบครัวของเรารวมกันแล้วเป็น 98 คนครับ
The CEO and owner of Bovet was in Thailand to explain new retail arrangements through Pendulum and Cortina.

It is surprising that, despite a decade in the industry and our longstanding familiarity with the brand, we had not yet had the chance to sit down with Pascal Raffy, until now. The owner of Bovet recently visited Bangkok to meet with local press and discuss his retail strategy for the brand going forward. Our conversation also explored Bovet’s unique novelties, the themes they embody, and the qualities that set them apart from other high-end timepieces out there.
Why did you decide to stop your corporate boutique and switch to a retail partnership?
I kindly ask you one thing. If I am here today, it means that something was not working. The step since the pandemic up to now was my personal investments. And I did personally the effort in Singapore, in Gaysorn, and then in Tokyo to open Bovet branded boutiques. But at a certain moment, you realise you cannot do everything alone, even with your teams. Then you come to a choice and you say, can you do everything by yourself in life? No.
Yes, for the collectors, it could be confusing. You clearly imagine, if it was working before, I would have never changed. So somewhere, please, let’s explain to the collectors. It is the best proof of the honesty, transparency and moral dimension of whatever we do in Bovet. It’s important for me to come myself to share with you. Why? Because if you respect people, you do the effort. If you are really sincere, you will talk openly. And this is why we are together today.
What is the unique position of Bovet?
Let’s consider a family-owned house, fully integrated with more than 200 years of history, which truly contributed to watchmaking patrimony. Who invented the open case backs in this industry? Edouard Bovet. He opened the case backs to admire movements. Afterwards, decorative arts are in the essence of this house. The third thing is contribution to beautiful mechanics. The first patent in 1889 for a flyback chronograph was a Bovet patent. This house will, at every time possible, push a step further.
Like you have just done with the Récital 28 Prowess 1 …
In the three centuries of watchmaking, daylight saving time was never mastered in a mechanical timepiece. This baby was thought during the pandemic. When you were doing Zoom or Teams and everything, I made the mistake what time it was really in Tokyo. My friends also made mistake. They thought in Switzerland it was 09:00 AM, but it was 10:00 AM, because of daylight saving. And from here comes the idea. We need now to do it, to resolve the daylight saving issue.
What drove you to create the various world time or multi-time zone watches?
So it is two things: the history of the house of Bovet, and my personal belief. Edourd Bovet travelled from Fleurier to London and China [to sell watches]. He was by horse, walking, by boat. He admired the chart of the planets, nature, smells, colours, cultures. So, travelling is in the house. The second thing, I studied international law and languages. So for me, it is very important to be all open to other cultures. Traveling, opening your mind, listening to the others, respecting the others, is crucial in life.
How big or how special is the bespoke business to Bovet?
You cannot imagine. Bespoke was in the blood of this house in 1822. Up to now, 36% of our production is bespoke. Let me tell you, it’s very interesting. And when I meet some collectors, they don’t especially know this, but when they see in the collections, engraving, painting, portraits, landscapes, they say, are you still doing this? And then you start the journey, talking, explaining. When you bespoke, it’s a full process. I do the renderings, I take ideas from my collectors. I propose them five, six, seven sketches. We tune together. So the process can be one month, can be two years. Let’s remember the Rolls Royce Boat Tail project, four years of development, a huge project.
You offer for the first time, the bracelet with the Récital 12. Can you tell us more about the design?
Interesting. It has always been my dream to have a bracelet. And I never got the idea. What can be the design? Three years ago, I said, look, Pascal, Bovet is five letters. The centre letter is a V. Oh. Very simple, but sometimes, you know, it takes you three, four, five years, sometimes in two minutes. You have the idea here. And I wanted the line of infinity, because when you close the bracelet, you see that the line cross each other.
How many people work for Bovet?
Ninety-eight, exactly, between artisans, offices, subsidiaries. The 98 include our subsidiary in United States, the subsidiary in Japan. They are in the 98. Everybody, all the family is 98.
