By now, most watch enthusiasts are well acquainted with Grand Seiko’s approach of designing dials inspired by the nature surrounding their two manufacturing sites, be it the Snowflake or the White Birch. However, many may not know or may have forgotten that Grand Seiko has previously designed, in 2006, a dial motif based on Mount Iwate, which can be seen from the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Morioka, northern Japan.
This year, Grand Seiko revisits that connection with the launch of the Evolution 9 Collection Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours Limited Edition (SLGH027). The standout feature is a light blue dial with a radial pattern from the centre, reminiscent of a bird’s-eye view into a volcanic crater. The 40 mm case and bracelet are made from Ever-Brilliant Steel, a material not only shinier than conventional stainless steel but also 1.7 times more pitting-resistant than the grade typically used in high-end watches.
The new SLGH027 is powered by the hi-beat, self-winding Calibre 9SA5, which features the Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels to deliver a power reserve of up to 80 hours.
