เดิมทีนั้นหลอดนิกซีได้รับการพัฒนาเพื่อใช้แสดงค่าตัวเลขในอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกในยุคทศวรรษที่ 1950 และ 1960 แต่ในภายหลังก็ถูกแทนที่ด้วยเทคโนโลยีที่ใหม่กว่า ผลิตง่ายกว่า และใช้พลังงานน้อยกว่า ศิลปินและนักประดิษฐ์สมัยใหม่บางคนจึงนำเอาหลอดนิกซีเก่าเก็บมาใช้สร้างผลงานสไตล์เรโทรอย่างเช่นนาฬิกานิกซีจนเกิดกระแสความสนใจในระดับหนึ่ง แต่ไม่ถึงขั้นเกิดเป็นเทรนด์
นาฬิกานิกซีเป็นของที่ใครชอบก็ชอบเลย ใครไม่ชอบก็ไม่ชอบเลย คนหนึ่งอาจมองว่าแปลกตา อีกคนอาจมองว่าแปลกไป คุณฟาบริซจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มแรกอย่างแน่นอน หลังจากที่เขาชมสารคดีเรื่อง Les Voyageurs du Temps บน Netflix ในปี ค.ศ. 2018 เขาก็เกิดความสนใจที่จะเรียนรู้เพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับเรื่องของหลอดนิกซีจากยุคอดีตนั้น ไปจนถึงขั้นที่อยากสร้างนาฬิกานิกซีที่มีความประณีตยิ่งกว่าที่มีในตลาดด้วยตนเอง
คุณฟาบริซเล่าย้อนกลับไปว่า “ในตอนที่ผมศึกษาวงการนิกซีช่วงนั้น ผมพบว่าคนส่วนมากเน้นเรื่องวงจรอิเล็กทรอนิกส์มากกว่าเรื่องความสวยงามของตัวนาฬิกา แนวทางของผมไม่เหมือนคนอื่น ผมมองว่าหลอดนิกซีเหล่านี้เป็นเหมือนอัญมณีที่สมควรได้รับการประดับบนแท่นที่สวยงาม ผมจึงเฟ้นหาวัสดุชั้นเยี่ยมมาผลิตตัวเรือนนาฬิกาของผม เป็นพวกไม้มีค่าอย่างเช่นเอลม์เบอร์และมาฮอกกานีจากคิวบา บ้างก็ใช้วัสดุสมัยใหม่อย่างเช่นคาร์บอนและเรซิน ความงามที่ไม่เหมือนใครและน่าสนใจของวัสดุเหล่านี้ทำให้ผมสามารถผลิตนาฬิกาที่มีคุณภาพเยี่ยมและมีเสน่ห์ในแบบวินเทจได้”
แล้วคุณฟาบริซก็ทิ้งตำแหน่งผู้บริหารบริษัทยาและชีวิตการทำงานออฟฟิศไว้เบื้องหลังเพื่อเริ่มเดินในเส้นทางแห่งการประดิษฐ์ สมกับชื่อของเขาที่บังเอิญมีความหมายว่า “ช่างฝีมือ” หรือ “ช่างตีเหล็ก” พอดี

นาฬิการุ่นต้นแบบเรือนแรกภายใต้ชื่อแบรนด์ NixieFab France เสร็จสมบูรณ์ช่วงสิ้นปี ค.ศ. 2022 นาฬิกาของ NixieFab France ใช้หลอดนิกซี 2 ประเภทด้วยกัน ได้แก่ หลอดเล็กขนาดสูงประมาณ 5 ซม. เรียกว่าหลอด IN-14 ซึ่งเป็นสต็อกเก่าเก็บจากอย่างน้อย 40 ปีก่อนและมีจำนวนจำกัด และ หลอดใหญ่ขนาดสูงประมาณ 15 ซม. เรียกว่าหลอด ZIN-70 ซึ่งเป็นหลอดใหม่ระดับงานคราฟท์ที่ผลิตด้วยความเชี่ยวชาญที่ถ่ายทอดมาจากช่างรุ่นก่อน อายุการใช้งานที่คาดหวังของหลอดเหล่านี้คือ 20 ปี ตัวนาฬิกาใช้ไฟ 24 โวลต์จากแหล่งพลังงานภายนอกคล้ายกับแล็ปท็อป การควบคุมทำโดยระบบอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่แม่นยำ สามารถตั้งเวลาผ่านทางแอปในมือถือได้ และซิงค์เวลาให้ตรงโดยอัตโนมัติผ่านทางระบบวายฟายได้

We spoke to the French gentleman crafting refined Nixie clocks from noble wood and other visually pleasing materials.

Our meeting with Fabrice Champenois of NixieFab France was totally by chance. It was towards the end of the last day at Time to Watches 2025 in Geneva. He had a booth in a far corner, and we were naturally drawn in by the warm orange glow of his few Nixie clocks on display.
Hobbyists like watch collectors are not unfamiliar with these unique, sometimes steampunkish creations. Nixie clocks indicate the hours, minutes, and quite often the seconds using the highly characteristic Nixie tubes. Predating LED and LCD as display technologies, the gas-filled Nixie tubes generally contain a stack of ten superimposed cathode filaments in the shapes of numerals from zero to nine, each one surrounded by a grid-like anode. The desired number is activated by applying voltage to that specific pair of cathode-anode electrodes. The resulting glow we see is actually ionisation of the gas surrounding that particular cathode.
Originally, Nixie tubes were used for numerical displays on electronic devices in the 1950s and 1960s. They have since been replaced by technologies that are easier to produce and consume less energy. Still, some artists and creators of this millennium had the idea to use new old stock tubes from the past in their retro-style projects, including Nixie clocks, which have attracted a steady stream of admirers despite never attaining the status of a trend.
That said, Nixie clocks are polarising. You are either fascinated by them or regard them as relics from the past. Champenois clearly belongs to the former camp. After watching a documentary called Les Voyageurs du Temps on Netflix in 2018, he was piqued to learn more about the technology of a bygone era and inspired to craft Nixie clocks with elevated artistic appeal.
“As I explored the community of Nixie enthusiasts, I found that many focused on the electronics, often neglecting the aesthetics of the medium. My approach was different. I saw these magnificent Nixie tubes as jewels deserving exceptional caskets. So I sought out top-of-the-range materials for my cases: precious woods such as elm burr and Cuban mahogany, as well as modern materials like carbon and resin. Their unique and fascinating beauty allows me to make a superb clock with vintage charm,” recalls Champenois.
And so this former executive from the pharmaceutical industry left the safety of the corporate world behind to embark on a journey of hands-on creation: a trade befitting his first name, which incidentally means craftsman or blacksmith.
“It was the start of a great adventure. I started by building my own wooden workshop, finally getting my hands dirty in the sawdust. Then I carefully fitted out the workshop: building workbenches, methodically tidying up, acquiring the essential tools and machines. I also took courses with master cabinetmakers to perfect my woodworking and finishing skills.”
His first prototype clock under the NixieFab France branding was completed at the end of 2022. Today, handcrafted NixieFab France clocks use two types of tubes. The smaller ones, about 5 cm in height, are called IN-14. They are old stocks of unused tubes from at least 40 years ago, whose availability is finite. The larger ones, the ZIN-70, are approximately 15 cm in height and are newly made artisanal tubes based on the know-how of old-timers. The life expectancy of these tubes is 20 years. These clocks are powered by an external 24V power supply, similar to laptop adapters. They are not only controlled by precise electronics but can also be configured via a smartphone app and synchronise automatically to the exact time via Wi-Fi.
“My vision is to introduce Nixie clocks to those who aspire to own unique and timeless objects — exceptional pieces not found elsewhere. Placing one in your living room or business goes far beyond a simple touch of luxury. Being an unusual, little-known piece, it will capture the attention of your visitors and guests. All these pieces are unique, not mass-produced. They can of course be reproduced, but will never be totally identical to the previous one. I can also produce bespoke clocks, perfectly adapted to your taste and interior,” adds Champenois.
For the moment, NixieFab France remains a one-man operation based in La Brosse-Montceaux, about 100 kilometres southeast of Paris. Annual production is capped at 40 clocks per year for the foreseeable future, as it is the intention of the company’s founder to maintain a small and exclusive output. Customisation for personal and business users is welcome, with a 50% deposit required before the commencement of actual production, which will take approximately three weeks, provided that no special materials need to be ordered.
