การสื่อสารถึงกันได้ทันทีคือวิถีแห่งชีวิตในวันนี้ของพวกเราทุกคน อย่างเช่นถ้าคุณกำลังอ่านบทความนี้อยู่บนเว็บไซท์ของเรา คุณก็เข้าข่ายนี้ด้วยเหมือนกันแล้ว แต่ภาพที่เห็นทั้งหมดนี้ก็ปิดบังความเป็นจริงประการหนึ่งอยู่ด้วย นั่นก็คือว่าผู้คนในแต่ละประเทศทั่วโลกนั้นอาจจะเห็นโพสท์หนึ่งบนโซเชียลมีเดียพร้อมกัน แต่ทุกคนไม่ได้เห็นโพสท์นั้นในเวลาเดียวกัน เพราะเวลาของคุณอาจจะเป็นช่วงเช้าและเวลาของใครสักคนหนึ่งอาจจะเป็นช่วงเย็นอยู่ก็ได้
อุตสาหกรรมนาฬิกามีผลิตภัณฑ์หลายหลากรุ่นที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อช่วยให้คุณติดตามเวลาในประเทศอื่นๆ ในโลกได้โดยง่าย นั่นก็คือนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีที่สามารถบอกเวลาได้ใน 2 ประเทศพร้อมกัน นั่นก็คือเวลาในประเทศที่เป็นถิ่นพำนักอาศัยจริงๆ ของคุณและเวลาในประเทศอื่นอีกประเทศหนึ่ง แต่แม้ว่านาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีอาจจะมีรูปลักษณ์คล้ายกันเมื่อดูแบบผิวเผิน แต่เมื่อเจาะลึกลงไปในรายละเอียดแล้วก็จะพบว่าระบบการตั้งเข็มต่างๆ นั้นมี 2 ระบบแตกต่างกันอีก ซึ่งจะมีผลต่อการใช้งานเวลาคุณใส่นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเรือนนั้นแล้วเดินทางไปยังต่างประเทศจริงๆ

รักดี: สวัสดีตอนเช้า 8 โมงจากกรุงเทพครับ กัวลาลัมเปอร์กับสิงคโปร์ 9 โมงแล้ว เป็นยังไงบ้าง
อาชก: ผมก็คิดมาโดยตลอดนะว่ามันแปลกดี ที่เราพิมพ์บทความร่วมกันพร้อมกันเป็นประจำ แต่เราไม่ได้อยู่ในไทม์โซนเดียวกันด้วยซ้ำ ดังนั้นจึงต้องขอบอกว่า “สวัสดีจากกรุงเทพในอนาคต” แล้วกันนะครับ
รักดี: ถ้าขอได้นี่ผมขออย่างเดียวเลยครับ ขอเลขแบบตรงๆ เลยได้ไหม นี่เดี๋ยวอีกไม่กี่ชั่วโมงในวันนี้ธนาคารออมสินของประเทศผมจะมีการจับรางวัลพิเศษเป็นแจ็คพ็อท 70 ล้าน แต่เสียดายผมเอาเงินไปซื้อนาฬิกาหมดแล้ว ไม่ได้ไปซื้อสลากเขาเลย
แดเนียล: ที่เราเปิดด้วยเรื่องไทม์โซนกันนี้ก็เพราะว่าเราตั้งใจจะคุยเรื่องนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีซึ่งสามารถบอกเวลาในประเทศที่สอง (และในบางรุ่นก็สามารถบอกเวลาในประเทศที่สามได้ด้วย) และเนื่องจากเราทั้ง 3 คนก็ล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นสายเนิร์ดทั้งหมด ผมจึงมั่นใจว่าเดี๋ยวเราจะมีอะไรได้คุยกันยาวเหยียดแน่ๆ แม้ว่านาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีนั้นจะไม่ได้ดูซับซ้อนอะไรมากก็ตาม
อาชก: นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีหรือนาฬิกาดูออลไทม์เป็นหนึ่งในประเภทของนาฬิกาที่ผู้คนนิยมสูงสุดตลอดกาล หรือต้องพูดว่าตั้งแต่ปี 1953 ทุกคนคิดว่าอะไรเป็นเหตุผลที่ทำให้เกิดความนิยมนี้ครับ
รักดี: การบินและการสื่อสารระหว่างประเทศหรือเปล่าครับ
แดเนียล: ขอตอบว่าน่าจะเป็นเพราะ Rolex เพราะนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีรูปแบบที่มีกันอยู่ในทุกวันนี้และเป็นที่จดจำของผู้คนมากที่สุดก็น่าจะ GMT-Master II เรื่องราวของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ถูกเล่าขานกันมาแล้วหลายครั้ง และเราจะไม่เข้าไปเรื่องประวัติศาสตร์ตรงนั้นในวันนี้ เอาเป็นว่ามันคือดีไซน์ที่ผ่านร้อนผ่านหนาวมานานแล้วก็แล้วกันครับ
อาชก: Rolex คือคำตอบของทุกคำถามอยู่แล้วแน่นอนล่ะ! GMT-Master รุ่นแรกนั้นเป็นการวางรากฐานว่านาฬิกาข้อมือฟังก์ชั่นจีเอ็มทีรุ่นต่างๆ จะมีหน้าตาอย่างไรในภายหลัง และอย่างที่รักดีตอบว่าพัฒนาการแห่งยุคสมัยนั่นเองที่ส่งผลให้นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเป็นที่นิยม ผู้คนเดินทางไปต่างแดนเพื่อทำธุรกิจหรือเพื่อไปเที่ยวอยู่เสมอ และการเดินทางจากนิวยอร์คไปปารีสก็ใช้เวลาแค่ไม่กี่ชั่วโมง ไม่ใช่ต้องเดินทางกันหลายวันแบบสมัยก่อน ว่าแล้วก็ถามเลยแล้วกันว่าคุณรู้หรือไม่ว่า GMT-Master เป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้หรือไม่
แดเนียล: ผมรู้สึกประหลาดใจเมื่อผมได้รู้เมื่อไม่กี่ปีก่อนว่า GMT-Master รุ่นแรกนั้นไม่ได้เป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้ตามนิยามที่คนเรียกกันในวงการ และผมรู้ด้วยว่าประเด็นเรื่องนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้กับนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะนั้นหัวข้อที่ทำให้คนเล่นนาฬิกาจำนวนมากปวดหัว ดังนั้นผมจึงขอขยายความก่อนเริ่มคุยต่อว่านาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้คือนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีที่อนุญาตให้คุณตั้งเข็ม 12 ชั่วโมงแยกโดยอิสระได้ ในขณะที่ถ้าเป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะนั้นเข็มที่ตั้งแบบอิสระได้จะเป็นเข็ม 24 ชั่วโมงแทน
นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้ทำให้เจ้าของนาฬิกาตั้งเวลาให้ตรงกับโลคอลไทม์ได้ง่ายกว่าเวลาเดินทาง คนส่วนมากจึงชอบนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้มากกว่า แต่สำหรับผมแล้วไม่ได้รู้สึกว่ามีปัญหาอะไรกับนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะ เพราะหากใส่เดินทางไปไทม์โซนอื่นก็แค่ตั้งเวลาใหม่ยากกว่าหน่อยเท่านั้น แต่ผมมั่นใจว่าทั้ง 2 ท่านน่าจะมีความคิดเห็นอะไรที่แรงๆ หน่อยในเรื่องนี้ ใช่ไหมครับ
รักดี: ผมค่อนข้างเยอะกับนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีครับ จะดูละเอียดหน่อย อย่างเมื่อวานนี้เลย มีนักสะสมนาฬิกาท่านหนึ่งแชร์โพสท์จากเพจ Facebook ของ Bulova Thailand เป็นนาฬิการุ่น Oceanographer GMT สีรูทเบียร์ รายละเอียดแรกที่ผมมองหาในสเปคคือจะดูว่ามันเป็นจีเอ็มทีแท้หรือไม่ สรุปว่าแท้นะครับ อย่างไรก็ดี ผมก็ไม่ได้เมินนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะไปเสียทั้งหมด ผมเองก็มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะอยู่เรือนหนึ่ง และเวลาใส่เดินทางจริงก็ไม่ได้เป็นปัญหาอะไรขนาดนั้น แต่ถ้าผมเลือกได้ ผมขอเลือกให้นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีของผมทุกเรือนเป็นจีเอ็มทีแท้ครับ
อาชก: เรื่องที่น่ารำคาญเรื่องหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีไม่ว่ารุ่นอะไรก็ตามก็คือคุณไม่อาจบอกได้โดยง่ายหรือไม่อาจบอกได้เลยเพียงตามองว่านาฬิกาเรือนนั้นเป็นจีเอ็มทีแท้หรือจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะ แต่ก็ต้องขอสารภาพตรงๆ ด้วยว่าผมไม่เคยแคร์ว่าจีเอ็มทีจะเป็นระบบใดจนผมซื้อมาเองเรือนหนึ่งเมื่อไม่นานมานี้ และก็ไม่ได้ซื้อมาเพื่อใช้เดินทางด้วย ผมคิดว่ามันเป็นเรื่องของความมีชั้นเชิงมากกว่าถ้าพอจะใช้คำนี้ได้ เพราะถ้าคุณมีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีรุ่นที่สังคมรู้จักอยู่ในครอบครอง ผู้คนก็จะรู้ว่าจีเอ็มทีรุ่นนั้นเป็นจีเอ็มทีแบบใด มันเลยมีเรื่องของ “ศักดิ์ศรี” เข้ามาให้พิจารณาด้วย
ความมีชั้นเชิงที่ว่านี้เกิดจากโครงสร้างที่ซับซ้อนกว่าของนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้ หากจะอธิบายให้ง่ายก็ต้องบอกว่าการเพิ่มเข็มชั่วโมงอีกเข็มหนึ่ง (อย่างในกรณีนี้ก็คือเข็มจีเอ็มที) และทำให้เข็มนั้นตั้งแยกแบบอิสระได้เป็นเรื่องที่ทำได้ไม่ยาก ผู้ผลิตเพียงต้องไปยุ่งกับโมชั่นเวิร์คฝั่งหน้าปัดนิดหน่อยเท่านั้น แต่ถ้าคุณต้องการจะทำให้เข็มชั่วโมงปกติตั้งแยกเป็นอิสระได้ทั้งแบบเดินหน้าและถอยหลังเมื่อเม็ดมะยมอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่สองนั้นคุณจะต้องทำอะไรอีกเยอะเลยในฝั่งด้านหลังของเครื่อง (หรือบริเวณที่เครื่องเชื่อมต่อกับโมชั่นเวิร์ค) นี่คือสาเหตุว่าทำไมนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้มีราคาที่ค่อนข้างจะสูงกว่า ดูมีชั้นเชิงกว่า ดูมีค่ากว่า ฯลฯ
รักดี: เครื่องตระกูลคาลิเบอร์ 8XXX และ 9XXX ในสมัยใหม่ของ Omega ได้รับการออกแบบมาให้มีฟังก์ชั่นตั้งเข็มชั่วโมงแบบอิสระเดินหน้าและถอยหลังได้แบบนี้เลยนะครับ แม้ว่าเกือบทุกรุ่นนั้นจะไม่ใช่นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีก็ตาม ถ้าจำไม่ผิด Omega เรียกฟังก์ชั่นการตั้งเข็มนี้ว่า “ฟังก์ชั่นไทม์โซน” โดยจะมีสัญลักษณ์รูปเครื่องบินกำกับอยู่บนบัตรพิกโตแกรมสีแดง เจ้าของนาฬิกาสามารถตั้งเข็มชั่วโมงให้ตรงกับโลคอลไทม์ได้ทันทีโดยที่ไม่ต้องหยุดการทำงานของนาฬิกา แต่เมื่อทำแบบนี้ได้สิ่งที่ต้องเสียไปก็คือการตั้งวันที่แบบควิกเซ็ท ดังนั้นจึงเป็นฟังก์ชั่นที่เหมาะกับคนที่เดินทางบ่อยๆ และในทางกลับกันก็จะกลายเป็นภาระสำหรับคนที่แทบจะไม่ได้เดินทางเลย
แดเนียล: โอเคครับ เห็นภาพเลยเมื่อเล่ามาแบบนี้ อย่างของ Seiko ซึ่งทุกคนรู้จักกันในฐานะผู้ผลิตนาฬิการาคาคบหาได้ เมื่อเขาทำนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีในคอลเลคชั่น 5 Sports ก็เป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะ แต่การสร้างเครื่องจีเอ็มทีรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 4R34 นี้ขึ้นมาก็เป็นการเปิดเซ็กเมนท์ใหม่ให้กับนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีในตลาดด้วย เพราะเมื่อเขาเอาเครื่องรุ่นนี้ไปขายให้กับแบรนด์อื่นๆ ในรหัส NH34 ก็ทำให้เรามีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีราคาแบบที่คนเข้าถึงได้เกิดขึ้นมากมายเลยในตลาด
มันอาจจะไม่ใช่จีเอ็มทีแท้ก็จริง แต่ผมคิดว่ามันคือจุดเริ่มต้นสำหรับคอมพลิเคชั่นนี้สำหรับคนส่วนมาก และนี่อาจจะเป็นเหตุผลว่าทำไมนาฬิกาแบบหลายไทม์โซนจึงเป็นที่นิยมมากขึ้นอีกในทุกวันนี้ก็ได้นะครับ ผมคิดว่าแบรนด์นาฬิกาเกือบทุกแบรนด์จะต้องมีจีเอ็มทีรูปแบบใดรูปแบบหนึ่ง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแบรนด์ระดับราคาใดหรือไฮโซเท่าใดก็ตาม
รักดี: เรื่องความเข้าถึงได้ที่คุณแดเนียลทักขึ้นมานี้เป็นเรื่องดีจริงครับ เพราะว่ามันทำให้มีคนจำนวนมากยิ่งขึ้นได้ใส่นาฬิกาจีเอ็มที และถ้าจะมาคิดดูดีๆ แล้ว คำว่า “จีเอ็มทีแท้” มันก็ฟังดูใจแคบอยู่หน่อยนึง เพราะหากจะมองแค่เรื่องการแสดงค่า นาฬิกาอะไรก็ตามที่สามารถบอกเวลาได้ 2 ประเทศก็ควรจะเรียกว่าเป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีได้แล้ว แต่นี่เรา (และสังคมคนเล่นนาฬิกา) กลับเอาเงื่อนไขไปวางซ้อนไว้อีกระดับหนึ่ง สมัยก่อนมันมีศัพท์เรียกว่า “นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีสำหรับนักเดินทาง” ด้วยนะครับ และผมก็รู้สึกว่าชื่อนั้นมันฟังดูเหมาะจะเป็นคู่กับ “นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะ” มากกว่าเสียอีก แต่คิดว่าที่ “นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้” กลายเป็นศัพท์ที่ใช้กันแพร่หลายเป็นเพราะว่ามันพิมพ์ง่ายและสะดวกกว่า “นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีสำหรับนักเดินทาง” ก็อาจจะเป็นได้
อาชก: ผมไม่แน่ใจว่าคนซื้อจะคิดถึงเรื่องนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้หรือไม่แท้นี้ตั้งแต่แรกนะครับ อย่างน้อยก็ไม่ใช่ประเด็นแรกที่คิดถึงล่ะ เท่าที่ผมรู้ ไม่มีแบรนด์นาฬิกาใดมีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีทั้ง 2 ประเภทนี้ในแบรนด์เดียว เพราะอย่าง Grand Seiko ที่มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้และ Seiko ที่มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะนั้นก็นับเป็นคนละแบรนด์กัน
แดเนียล: ผมว่ามันก็เข้าข่ายเดียวกันอย่างที่คนเล่นนาฬิกาคุ้นเคยอยู่แล้ว คือ “จ่ายน้อยได้น้อย จ่ายมากได้มาก” เพราะแม้แต่โครโนกราฟเราก็ยังซื้อรุ่นที่ราคาต่ำกว่าได้เพราะเป็นการใช้โมดูลมาติดตั้งบนเครื่องพื้นฐาน ไม่ได้เป็นนาฬิกาเครื่องโครโนกราฟแท้ๆ ซึ่งมีราคาสูงกว่าและมีรายละเอียดชั้นสูงอย่างคอลัมน์วีลหรือเวอร์ติคอลคลัทช์ ฯลฯ
ดังนั้นผมจึงคิดว่าผู้ซื้อในตลาดก็ย่อมต้องมีความหลากหลายด้วย เช่น คนที่มุ่งมั่นว่าจะต้องซื้อเฉพาะนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้เท่านั้นเพราะว่าตั้งเวลาง่ายเวลาเดินทางจริง และคนที่ยินดีเลือกนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะที่มีราคาต่ำกว่า อย่างไรก็ดี แม้ในเรื่องการทำงานจะไม่ได้ต่างอะไรกันมากนัก แต่การที่เราเดินทางโดยมีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีที่มีราคาแพงและผู้คนรู้จักบนข้อมือนั้นก็เป็นเรื่องที่ค่อนข้างอันตรายด้วยเช่นกัน ผมเองไม่มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มที แต่คุณรักดีและคุณอาชกใส่นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเวลาเดินทางจริงๆ ไหมครับ
รักดี: ผมใส่นะ แต่ว่าก็จะต้องคิดถึงเรื่องความปลอดภัยก่อนเสมอ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีหรือไม่จีเอ็มทีก็ตาม
อาชก: ผมขอตอบว่าผมไม่ใส่นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเวลาเดินทางครับ เพราะว่าผมมีจีเอ็มทีแค่เรือนเดียว และผมเพิ่งจะเริ่มคิดถึงเรื่องความปลอดภัยอย่างที่รักดีบอกเมื่อไม่นานมานี้ เพราะว่าจีเอ็มทีของผมคือ Rolex GMT-Master II ซึ่งเป็นนาฬิกาที่รู้จักกันแพร่หลายเกินไปหน่อย อาจจะไปเข้าตาโจรได้ ผมก็ไม่ได้อยากเป็นหนึ่งในตัวเลขของสถิติอะไรที่ไหนหรอกนะครับ!
ถ้าจะว่าไปแล้ว GMT-Master II นี่เป็นนาฬิกาแบบใส่ไปได้ทุกที่และใส่ทำทุกอย่างได้นะครับ หรืออย่างน้อยนั่นก็คือความตั้งใจในตอนแรก และผมก็คิดด้วยว่าดีไซน์นี่แหละคือจุดดึงดูดของนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีไม่ว่ารุ่นอะไรเลย อย่างที่ผมบอกว่าความสนใจของผมในตอนแรกเกิดขึ้นเพราะสไตล์ของนาฬิกาและสิ่งที่มันเคยเป็นตัวแทน (หรือยังเป็นอยู่) ในยุคสมัยของสมาร์ทวอทช์และสมาร์ทโฟนเช่นนี้ (และอีกไม่นานจะมีสมาร์ทแพนท์สตามมาอีก)
รักดี: นี่ผมจะทักด้วยว่าที่เราคุยกันมาทั้งหมดนี้คือเรื่องกลไกล้วนๆ เลยนะครับ เรายังไม่ได้พูดถึงเรื่องรูปลักษณ์ของนาฬิกาด้วยซ้ำ เช่น นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีที่เป็นทรงสปอร์ต นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีที่เป็นทรงเดรส หรือว่าเราจะต้องคิดถึงจุดประสงค์ในการเดินทางของเราด้วยหรือไม่ เช่น ผมมีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีรุ่นหนึ่งที่เป็นสไตล์ลุยไปได้ทุกที่ สวมใส่ด้วยสายแบบเบรซเลท จะใส่ไปทริปทำงานหรือทริปไปเที่ยวก็ไม่ต้องกลัวฝนตก เหงื่อออก ฯลฯ แต่ถ้าใส่ไปทริปทำงานแล้วมีวันไหนต้องใส่สูทเป็นทางการมันก็จะดูไม่เข้า ผมจึงต้องพกนาฬิกาเดรสสายหนังเรือนที่ถูกที่สุดของผมไปด้วยเสมอเพื่อเปลี่ยนใส่ในช่วงเวลาไม่กี่ชั่วโมงนั้น เช่น ถ้าในตารางงานบอกว่ามีกาล่าดินเนอร์ตอนค่ำ อะไรอย่างนั้น
การได้เป็นเจ้าของนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีนั้นก็เป็นอะไรที่ย้อนวันวานดี มันบอกอะไรหลายอย่างเกี่ยวกับรสนิยมของผู้สวมใส่ และการที่มันมีดีไซน์หลากหลายแบบให้เลือก (นี่คือนับเฉพาะจีเอ็มทีแบบต่างๆ ยังไม่ต้องรวมไปถึงเวิลด์ไทม์) ก็ถือเป็นเรื่องที่ช่วยอีกทางหนึ่งด้วย และความรู้สึกที่ว่าจีเอ็มทีบางประเภทคือแบบที่ถูกต้องนั้นก็ทำให้คุณในฐานะเจ้าของผู้ครอบครองกลายเป็นนักสะสมนาฬิกาที่มีเกียรติภูมิยิ่งกว่าด้วย!
แดเนียล: ผมบอกตอนเริ่มบทความนี้ว่าเวลาคนคิดถึงนาฬิกาจีเอ็มที คนจะคิดถึง GMT-Master II ก่อน และผมคิดว่านาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นต้นแบบในเชิงจิตวิญญาณของนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีราว 90% ของที่เห็นกันอยู่ทุกวันนี้ ขอบตัวเรือนแบบสองสี เข็มชั่วโมงหัวลูกศรสีโดดเด่น ดีไซน์หลักๆ ก็จะเป็นประมาณนี้ แต่ทุกแบรนด์ก็จะมีการตีความในรูปแบบของตนเองซึ่งถือเป็นเรื่องที่น่าสนใจ และในยุคสมัยปัจจุบันที่มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีมากมายหลายรุ่นนั้นก็ถือเป็นเรื่องน่ายินดีที่เราได้เห็นการนำดีเอ็นเอของแต่ละแบรนด์ไปฝากไว้ในดีไซน์ของเรือนเวลาสไตล์ที่ผู้คนคุ้นตากันอยู่แล้วแบบนี้นะครับ
แต่นานๆ ทีเราก็จะเห็นแบรนด์ที่คิดหาวิธีนำเสนอฟังก์ชั่นจีเอ็มทีแบบไม่เหมือนใคร และผมก็ชื่นชอบมากเสียด้วย อย่างล่าสุดนี้ก็มี Parmigiani Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante ซึ่งตอนแรกที่ผมเห็นนั้นผมยังไม่ค่อยเข้าใจเท่าไหร่ แต่พอดูไปเรื่อยๆ ก็เริ่มเห็นว่ามันเป็นวิธีการบอกเวลาในประเทศที่สองที่น่าสนใจมากเลยจริงๆ
เพียงกดปุ่มด้านข้างตัวเรือน เข็มชั่วโมงอีกเข็มหนึ่งที่ซ่อนอยู่ใต้เข็มชั่วโมงปกติก็จะปรากฏตัวออกมาเพื่อทำหน้าที่บอกเวลาในประเทศที่สอง และเมื่อไม่ต้องการดูเวลาในประเทศอื่นแล้วก็สามารถกดปุ่มอีกปุ่มหนึ่งเพื่อซ่อนเข็มนั้นกลับเข้าไปใต้เข็มชั่วโมงปกติได้ ไอเดียนี้ที่จริงไม่ได้เป็นไอเดียแปลกใหม่ แต่วิธีการนำเสนอและใช้งานนั้นแปลกใหม่จริงๆ และผมชอบมาก และนาฬิกาเรือนนี้ย่อมไม่สามารถจัดได้ว่าเป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้หรือนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะครับ
อาชก: Parmigiani Fleurier GMT เป็นนาฬิกาที่น่าทึ่งเพราะการเล่นนอกบทจากนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเดิมๆ มันสามารถซ่อนเข็มได้ (หรือจะเรียกว่าคุณสามารถเรียกเข็มออกมาใช้งานแบบออนดีมานด์ก็สุดแล้วแต่) มันจึงนำเสนออีกอารมณ์หนึ่งเลย
รักดี: เราต้องไม่ลืมนาฬิกาแนวอย่าง Geographic ของ Jaeger-LeCoultre ด้วยนะครับที่เราสามารถเลือกแสดงเวลาในไทม์โซนที่สองด้วยการเลือกชื่อเมืองได้ หรือ Hora Mundi ของ Breguet ที่บอกเวลาทีละประเทศก็จริง แต่เราสามารถกดสลับเวลาระหว่างเมืองที่เลือกไว้ 2 เมืองได้อย่างรวดเร็ว
แดเนียล: ผมชอบตรงที่การแสดงเวลาในประเทศที่สองนั้นอาจจะดูเป็นเรื่องง่ายๆ แต่ว่าแบรนด์นาฬิกาต่างๆ ก็ยังคิดหาวิธีในการเลือกนำเสนอแบบซับซ้อนต่างกันได้อีก อย่างเช่นนาฬิกาเวิลด์ไทม์ซึ่งจะว่าไปก็เป็นจีเอ็มทีในรูปแบบที่ซับซ้อนกว่า (มาก) ก็ยังมีการปรับปรุงต่อเนื่องไปได้อีก เช่น Patek Philippe ซึ่งมี Ref. 5330G เป็นเวิลด์ไทม์รุ่นใหม่ที่สามารถตั้งวันที่ย้อนหลังได้หากเราตั้งเวลาให้ย้อนข้ามกลับเส้นแบ่งวันที่ของโลกซึ่งอยู่ระหว่างเกาะมิดเวย์และอ็อคแลนด์ แล้วก็ยังมี Bovet Recital 30 ซึ่งไม่เพียงแก้ปัญหาเรื่องเดย์ไลท์เซฟวิ่งไทม์ได้อีก
ผมคิดว่านาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเป็นที่นิยมเพราะว่ามันนำเสนอพื้นฐานของการบอกเวลาในไทม์โซนที่สอง มันตรงไปตรงมาและเข้าใจง่าย จากนั้นจึงมีพื้นที่ให้ขยับขึ้นไปหากลไกที่มีความซับซ้อนยิ่งกว่าอย่างเช่นเวิลด์ไทม์ที่ผมเพิ่งพูดถึงไปนี้

อาชก: คนบางคนเขาก็คิดถึงจีเอ็มทีและเวิลด์ไทม์เป็นก้อนเดียวกันนะครับ เพราะเขามองว่ามันเป็นนาฬิกาสำหรับนักเดินทางเหมือนกัน แต่อย่างที่รักดีทักนี่ก็ถูกแล้วว่าเราต้องแยกแยะ เวิลด์ไทม์เป็นเรื่องที่เราต้องยกไปคุยแยกเพราะว่ามันแตกต่างกับจีเอ็มทีโดยสิ้นเชิงเลย แม้แต่ประวัติศาสตร์ของมันก็มาจากคนละเส้นทางกัน
รักดี: บางครั้งผมก็เป็นคนตื้นๆ ง่ายๆ แค่สิ่งที่ผมมองเห็น (หรือมองไม่เห็น) เลยนะครับ สำหรับผมแล้วนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเป็นอะไรที่อ่านค่าง่ายกว่านาฬิกาเวิลด์ไทม์มาก เรื่องสายตากำลังเริ่มยาวก็หนึ่งแล้ว และสาเหตุที่ผมชอบนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีมากกว่านาฬิกาเวิลด์ไทม์ก็เพราะว่าผมไม่ได้ต้องการรู้เวลาทุกเมืองทั่วโลกพร้อมกัน ถ้าผมเดินทาง ผมก็แค่อยากรู้เวลาของที่เมืองนั้นกับเวลาที่เมืองไทยเท่านั้น
พูดแล้วก็นึกถึงบทสนทนาหนึ่งเมื่อนานมาแล้ว ตอนนั้นผมไปทริปของแบรนด์หนึ่งกับเจ้าของสำนักพิมพ์ชาวไทยท่านหนึ่ง ขณะคุยอะไรกันอยู่ที่เลาจ์ที่สนามบินหรือที่ใดสักที่หนึ่ง พี่เขาก็พูดขึ้นมาว่าเขาไม่ต้องการนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีด้วยซ้ำ เพราะว่าถ้าเขาไปเมืองนอกเขาก็ไม่ต้องการรู้เวลาที่เมืองไทยแล้วว่ากี่โมง ผมจำคำพูดที่แน่ชัดไม่ได้ แต่ผมจำได้ว่าบทสนทนานั้นช่วยเปิดมุมมองใหม่ให้กับผม เพราะว่าเขาเป็นเจ้าของกิจการจึงมีพนักงานดูแลเรื่องการงานต่างๆ ให้ ส่วนตัวผมนั้นเป็นเพียงพนักงาน ไม่ว่าจะเมื่อตอนนั้นหรือในตอนนี้ ดังนั้นผมจึงมีหน้าที่ที่ต้องรับผิดชอบและสิ่งต่างๆ ให้ต้องคิดกังวล ในขณะที่พี่เขาสามารถเดินทางได้แบบสบายใจ ไม่มีโซ่ตรวนล่องหนใดพันธนาการอยู่ คุณแดเนียลยังไม่เคยได้ยินเรื่องนี้ แต่ว่าคุณอาชกเคยได้ยินแล้วมาแล้วแน่นอน

ส่วนตัวผมเองนั้นถึงแม้ว่าจะชอบความซับซ้อนของกลไกต่างๆ แต่ผมกลับทำตัวตรงกันข้ามโดยการใส่นาฬิกาดำน้ำแล้วหมุนขอบตัวเรือนเพื่อทำหน้าที่บอกเวลาโฮมไทม์ง่ายๆ อย่างนั้นเลย ส่วนเข็มชั่วโมงและเข็มนาทีนั้นก็ตั้งให้ตรงกับโลคอลไทม์ไป มันอาจจะไม่ได้สะดวกเท่ากับการตั้งเข็มชั่วโมงแบบควิกเซ็ทได้ในนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้ แต่ผมชินกับวิธีนี้แล้ว นี่เท่ากับว่าผมได้เปิดเผยความบ้านของผม และเท่ากับที่ผมบอกว่าผมจำเป็นต้องมีนาฬิกาเวิลด์ไทม์นั้นมันไม่ใช่เรื่องจำเป็นจริงๆ
แดเนียล: ผมก็เดินทางด้วยนาฬิกา 3 เข็มธรรมดาเหมือนกัน ไม่มีวันที่ด้วยยิ่งดีจะได้ตั้งเวลาง่ายๆ ไม่ใช่ว่าผมไม่ต้องการรู้เวลาที่บ้านหรอกนะครับ แต่ด้วยดาต้าโรมมิ่งบนมือถือทุกวันนี้ เราเดินทางไปที่ไหนมือถือก็โชว์เวลาที่นั่นแล้วเมื่อมันจับสัญญาณเครือข่ายท้องถิ่นได้ ทั้งนี้และทั้งนั้น ผมก็ยังอยากได้นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีอยู่ดี เพราะผมชอบลุคของนาฬิกาแนวนี้บนข้อมือ สีสันจัดจ้านงี้ เข็มเยอะๆ งี้! ผมว่านี่อาจจะเป็นเหตุผลหลักที่ทำให้นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีเป็นที่นิยมก็ได้ แม้ว่านาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีจะเป็นคอมพลิเคชั่นที่มีประโยชน์ใช้สอยจริงเป็นอย่างมากที่สุด แต่ผู้คนอาจจะอยากได้นาฬิกาประเภทนี้เพราะลุคของมันก็ได้
รักดี: พวกเราเป็นคนมีเหตุผลที่ไม่ค่อยมีเหตุผลครับ หมายความว่า ที่จริงแล้วเรารู้แหละว่าโทรศัพท์หรือสมาร์ทวอทช์มีฟังก์ชั่นทั้งหลายที่เราจำเป็นต้องใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน แล้วเราก็ใช้จริงเสียด้วย เป็นครั้งคราว อย่างเวลาเดินทางผมก็จะตั้งมือถือผมให้โชว์นาฬิกาดิจิตอลใหญ่ๆ 2 เรือน (สำหรับเวลาที่โน่นและเวลาเมืองไทย) แต่เวลาไม่เดินทางก็จะตั้งให้มันขึ้นนาฬิกาแบบเข็มเล็กๆ เป็นแผง 4 เรือนเหมือนกำแพงโรงแรมสมัยก่อน (สำหรับลอสแองเจลิส วอชิงตันดีซี เจนีวา/ปารีส และ โตเกียว เพราะเมืองเหล่านี้เป็นเมืองที่มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับผม ไม่ว่าจะเพราะเรื่องส่วนตัวหรือเรื่องงานก็ตาม) ดังนั้นนี่จึงเป็นด้านที่มีเหตุผลของเรา แต่ในฐานะคนรักนาฬิกาหรือนักสะสมแล้ว เราก็ยังคงชื่นชมเสน่ห์แห่งจักรกลหรือถ้าจะเป็นภาษาอังกฤษก็คงต้องเรียกว่า “mechanical romance” อยู่ดี

แดเนียล: เห็นภาพมากๆ ครับ และก็สมกับเป็นคนรักนาฬิกาตัวจริง หลังจากคุยกับทั้ง 2 ท่านเรื่องนี้มาพักใหญ่ ผมก็เริ่มคิดแล้วว่าถ้าผมจะซื้อนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีสักเรือนก็จะต้องขอเป็นจีเอ็มทีแท้แหละ ขอไม่เอานาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแบบนั่งโต๊ะแล้วเพราะว่ามันตอบโจทย์เรื่องประสิทธิภาพได้ไม่เต็มที่ แล้วอย่างนี้ผมจะไปซื้อนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้รุ่นใดได้บ้างที่จะไม่ถึงขั้นหมดตัวครับ นี่เป็นคำถามที่สำคัญที่สุดของผมในเวลานี้
อาชก: ก็อย่างที่แดเนียลบอกนะครับว่างบของเราไม่มีทางเพียงพอสำหรับความต้องการของเราอยู่แล้ว ส่วนตัวผมรู้สึกเสียดายว่าโลกเรามีแบรนด์นาฬิกามากมาย แต่แบรนด์ที่มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้นั้นกลับมีไม่มากนัก โชคยังดีสำหรับแดเนียลที่ในช่วงไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมานี้มีตัวเลือกมากขึ้นพอสมควร รุ่นหนึ่งที่ผมชอบแบบจริงจังก็คือ Longines Spirit Zulu ต่างๆ งานนี้ Longines ช่วยทุกคนได้มากด้วยการนำฟังก์ชั่นจีเอ็มทีแท้มาสู่มือนักสะสมที่มีความชอบแต่มีงบจำกัด
รักดี: เห็นด้วยที่สุดครับเรื่อง Longines รุ่นนี้ ผมเพิ่งได้เล่น Spirit Zulu Time 1925 ใหม่เมื่อสัปดาห์ก่อนนี้เอง มันอาจจะไม่ใช่ Spirit Zulu Time ในดีไซน์ที่ผมชอบที่สุด แต่ว่ามันก็ดูดีในแบบวินเทจของมัน ด้วยขอบตัวเรือนหุ้มโรสโกลด์ แต่ว่ามีสายเบรซเลทเป็นสตีลล้วนไม่ใช่ทูโทน ผมว่าคุณแดเนียลจะชอบที่ Spirit Zulu Time 1925 รุ่นนี้ขนาด 39 มม. ด้วยครับ
แดเนียล: เยี่ยมเลยครับผม ผมว่าดีนะครับที่แบรนด์ต่างๆ หันมาให้สนใจแยกแยะเรื่องนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีประเภทต่างๆ มากขึ้น นั่นหมายความว่าตลาดกำลังมีความรู้มากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ (และเนิร์ดขึ้นเรื่อยๆ) และตลาดไม่ได้ซื้อนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีรุ่นนั้นรุ่นนี้เพียงเพื่อต้องการหาอะไรแทน Rolex เท่านั้น นี่ถ้า Seiko ยอมผันความพยายามด้านการวิจัยและพัฒนาไปผลิตเครื่องนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้ที่มีราคาถูกเพื่อใช้เองและเพื่อขายให้กับไมโครแบรนด์ทั้งหลายด้วยก็คงจะดีไม่น้อยเลยนะครับ
นอกเหนือจาก Longines แล้วนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้รุ่นที่ผมต้องการยกเป็นตัวอย่างก็คือ Mido Ocean Star GMT เพราะ 2 เหตุผลด้วยกัน ประการแรกเพราะเรื่องราคาที่สบายงบอย่างที่คุณแดเนียลต้องการ ประการที่สองเพราะว่ามันคือนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีรุ่นที่ทำให้ผมรู้ว่าโลกเรามีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มที 2 แบบ เพราะก่อนหน้านั้นผมเข้าใจแบบผิดๆ มาตลอดเองว่านาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีทุกเรือนทำงานเหมือนกัน มันเป็นอะไรที่ Inception มากครับ … แบบว่าฉันไปอยู่ที่ไหนมา … ทำไมฉันไม่รู้ … ฉันเข้าใจผิดขนาดนั้นได้อย่างไร
รักดี: เข้าใจความต้องการนี้นะครับ แต่ผมว่าเราคงจะไม่ได้เห็นเร็วๆ นี้หรอก เพราะไม่ว่าอย่างไรเขาก็ต้องมีการแบ่งแยกและจัดระดับให้แตกต่างจาก Grand Seiko ซึ่งเป็นแบรนด์ที่ทำแต่นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้ล้วนๆ เลย
แดเนียล: ทำไมการประดิษฐ์นาฬิกามันต้องซับซ้อนด้วยก็ไม่รู้นะครับ
รักดี: การประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาอาจจะไม่ได้ซับซ้อนขนาดนั้น แต่ธุรกิจนาฬิกานี่ซับซ้อนแน่นอน [ ขอใส่อีโมติค่อนรูปหน้าร้องไห้ตัวหนึ่งตรงนี้ได้ไหมนะ ]
แดเนียล: โอเคครับ ในเมื่อคุณอาชกและคุณรักดีเป็นผู้ที่มีนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีในเวลานี้ ขอถามแล้วกันนะครับว่าสาเหตุที่เลือกซื้อคือเพราะอะไร และปัจจัยที่พิจารณาก่อนตัดสินใจซื้อมีอะไรบ้าง เพราะว่าผมนี่อยากรู้เสมอว่าใครซื้อนาฬิกาแต่ละเรือนเพราะอะไร
อาชก: GMT-Master II นี่เป็นนาฬิกาที่ท้าทายการซื้อของผมมานานแสนนานครับ ตอนแรกเขาก็เลิกทำรุ่นเป๊ปซี่เพราะข้อจำกัดเรื่องการใช้วัสดุเซราโครม พอเลิกแล้วผมก็ไม่ยอมซื้อ GMT-Master II ขอบสีอื่น จากนั้นเมื่อ Rolex เอาขอบสีนี้กลับมาอีกก็ทำตัวเรือนเป็นไวท์โกลด์ซะงั้น แล้วเมื่อเขายอมทำเป็นสตีลในท้ายที่สุด ตลาดรองก็เริ่มดุเดือดไปแล้วพอดี ไม่ว่าใครก็ไม่สามารถซื้อ GMT-Master II รุ่นสตีลได้ ขนาดจะซื้อรุ่นทองก็ยังยาก และราคาที่ขายกันก็สูงกว่าราคาป้ายด้วย
นาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีรุ่นอื่นมันก็มีแหละ แต่ไม่ใช่สำหรับผมไง อย่างที่ผมบอกว่าผมไม่ได้ต้องการนาฬิการุ่นนี้เพื่อประโยชน์ด้านการใช้งาน และผมคิดว่าค่าพรีเมียมที่บวกกันเข้าไปนั้นก็เพ้อเจ้อด้วย สำหรับผมแล้วมันคือเรื่องเสน่ห์แห่งจักรกลเท่านั้นเลย เพราะว่า GMT-Master II สีเป๊ปซี่นั้นเป็นนาฬิการุ่นแรกที่ผมอยากได้ตั้งแต่เด็ก ฟังดูอาจจะแปลกๆ แต่ว่านี่เราเป็นนิตยสารนาฬิกา จริงไหมครับ และผมก็เป็นบรรณาธิการเสียด้วยนะ ดังนั้นคุณผู้อ่านก็ย่อมเข้าใจได้อยู่แล้ว
รักดี: โอ้โห … สงสัยคุณอาชกจะชอบวลี “mechanical romance” จริงๆ ซะแล้วนะครับ
คุณแดเนียลครับ สำหรับผมแล้ว ผมมีความรู้สึกว่าการได้รู้เวลาในอีกสถานที่หนึ่งมันดูโปรในแบบคนทำงาน คงเป็นเพราะว่าผมโตมาในครอบครัวที่ทั้งคุณพ่อและคุณแม่ทำงานกับต่างประเทศเป็นประจำทุกวัน คุณพ่อเคยทำสายการบินและโรงแรม ส่วนคุณแม่ก็ทำงานกับองค์กรระดับนานาชาติแห่งหนึ่งที่มีสำนักงานระดับภูมิภาคอยู่ที่อินเดียและสำนักงานใหญ่อยู่ที่เจนีวา ผมเลยโตมาแบบที่รับรู้ว่าโลกเรามีหลายไทม์โซนก่อนที่ผมจะขับรถเป็นเสียอีก ผมคิดว่านี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมเคยเล่าเรื่องนี้เป็นลายลักษณ์อักษรนะครับ และผมก็หวังว่าคุณแม่ผมจะไม่มาอ่านเจอด้วย ไม่อย่างนั้นเดี๋ยวผมก็จะโดนเอ็ดอีกว่าทำไมเอาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับครอบครัวมาเปิดเผยในที่สาธารณะ แม่ก็คือแม่น่ะครับ ไม่ว่าเราจะอายุเท่าใดแล้วก็ตาม จริงไหมครับ
อันนั้นคือเหตุผลว่าทำไมจึงชอบนาฬิกาจีเอ็มที ส่วนเรื่องปัจจัยที่พิจารณานั้น ผมคิดว่าผมมองเรื่องดีไซน์ในภาพรวมของนาฬิกาก่อน เหมือนนาฬิกาประเภทอื่นๆ จากนั้นก็ดูว่าอ่านค่ารู้เรื่องชัดเจนแค่ไหน แล้วจึงดูว่ามันเป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้หรือไม่ แต่ผมก็ต้องขอย้ำอีกทีว่าการไม่ได้เป็นนาฬิกาจีเอ็มทีแท้นั้นก็ไม่ได้แปลว่าผมจะเมินนะครับ เพราะอย่าง Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT ของผมนั้นก็ไม่ใช่จีเอ็มทีแท้ ผมซื้อเพราะว่าช่วงนั้นผมอยู่ในโหมดซื้อนาฬิกาที่มีดีไซน์ระดับไอค่อนหรือนาฬิกาที่มีรูปทรงพิเศษต่างๆ แบรนด์ละเรือน และผมรู้สึกว่าเมื่อเพิ่มขอบตัวเรือนหมุนได้สีดำ/แดงและเข็มจีเอ็มทีปลายสีแดงเข้ามาแล้วมันก็เข้ากับธีมนักบินของนาฬิกา BR 03 ได้เป็นอย่างดีด้วย

The editors of World of Watches in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand share how they look at this highly popular complication in the market.

Instant communication is a way of life for all of us. If you are reading this story online, that is literally you right now. This is an illusion that conceals a powerful truth: there is no shared “now” between us all. You need only consider that a post on social media that you see on your feed is being viewed by people all over the world who are not on your local clock.
The wonderful world of watches has several competing options for keeping track of time in different parts of the world, while also keeping score of your home time. The chief problem is the difference between the so-called “true” and “desk” GMT watches, which leaves not a few of us enthusiasts confused or unsatisfied. This is especially germane when the matter of price enters into because although both GMT functions deliver the same results, the prices can be very different, and the (symbolic) value too.
Confronting all the issues head on, the editors of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand try to talk their way into making sense of it.
DG: Greetings, dear colleagues! It is time for yet another instalment of our quarterly conversations.
RC: Good morning from 8 AM Bangkok. How are things in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore where the time is already 9 AM?
AS: I always find it amusing that even though we are all typing this up simultaneously, we aren’t actually in the same time zone! Hello from the future Bangkok!
RC: I need only one thing from you: the correct winning lottery number! The Government Savings Bank of Thailand is having the biggest drawing today for a jackpot of 70 million baht. It’s happening in a few hours. But I spent all my money on watches so no luck in that for me.
DG: Well, speaking of time difference, I suppose it is the best segue to bring us to the topic of discussion for today. It is a complication that will allow for a tracking of a second (and in some cases even a third) time zone. And as we are all incredible nerds here, I am sure there is plenty to discuss regarding this seemingly simple contraption.
AS: As usual, there might be a question in this for us all because the dual time or GMT watch is one of the most popular models of watches of all time, or rather since 1953. What do you suppose accounts for this popularity?
RC: Aviation and international connectivities?
DG: My answer is probably Rolex. If you think of the most recognisable form of GMT timepiece that exists today, in your mind’s eye you are probably thinking of the GMT-Master II. The story of its origins has been told many times over, so we probably won’t go into it today. But suffice it to say, its design has long endured.
AS: Rolex is of course the answer to all (watch) questions! The original GMT-Master defined what the wristwatch GMT watch would come to look like, but I think Ruckdee’s answer there tells us that modernity itself is responsible for the popularity of this type of watch. People travelling to and fro, for business and pleasure, all while moving at the speed of flight. It must have been quite shocking to arrive in Paris from New York in hours rather than days! Bonus question for later (or now) too: was the GMT-Master a true GMT watch?
DG: I was surprised when I learned this some years ago that the first GMT-Master was not, in industry terms, a “true GMT” and I know this discussion of a true vs desk GMT is one that irks many enthusiasts. So, just to reiterate the difference is that a true GMT will let you set the 12-hour hand independently compared to a desk GMT which jumps the 24-hour hand instead.
The former makes it much easier to set local time while travelling so many still prefer a true GMT. It doesn’t really bother me because it is just slightly more complex to set the timepiece when travelling to another time zone with a desk GMT. But I am sure you both will have strong opinions on this?
RC: I am quite obsessive when analysing GMT watches. Just yesterday, a local collector here shared a Facebook post by Bulova Thailand. The watch was an Oceanographer GMT in the “root beer” execution. The first thing I scanned for was any indication if it was a true GMT watch. Happily for me, it was. Having said that, being a desk GMT is not a complete dealbreaker for me. I do own one such watch and it turned out not to be that much of an inconvenience when travelling. But if I can choose, I would prefer for my GMT watches to be true GMT.
AS: One of the irritating things about any given GMT watch is that it is hard to tell, impossible really, at a glance what sort of GMT it is. But, to be honest here, I have never much cared about the functionality of the GMT watch, until I bought one, but even that came later and had little to do with functionality. It was more of an elegance issue, if you will, at least for me. It should also be noted that if you own a recognisable GMT watch, observers will know what type it is so there is some “street cred,” to be considered here.
That digression aside, by elegant (as mentioned), I am indeed referring to the more complex nature of the true GMT. To keep it simple here, it is a small matter to add another hour hand (the GMT hand in this case), and make that hand adjustable independently; it is just a matter of fiddling with the motionworks dialside. Now, if you want to do the same, as noted, with the standard hour hand – allowing the user to go forwards or backwards with the crown in position two – that requires a bit more finesse movement-side (or how the movement connects with the motionworks). This is why true GMT watches can be quite a bit pricier, which also feeds into them being more elegant because of perceived value and such.
RC: Omega’s modern Calibres 8XXX and 9XXX have been built with this functionality in mind, despite nearly all of them not being a GMT watch. I believe Omega calls it the “time zone” function, with an airplane icon on the red pictogram card, which allows you to set the hour hand to local time immediately without stopping the whole watch. This comes at the expense of the quickset date feature, though. So it is ideal for frequent travellers but in turn a hindrance for people who hardly visit another time zone.
DG: I see, it makes sense when you put it this way. For example, even when Seiko, known for its more pocket-friendly price points, decided to build a GMT for the Seiko 5 Sports collection, they made a desk GMT mechanism. And I have to say, the creation of this calibre 4R34 GMT movement has really opened the doors for the GMT segment of watches. Their NH34 (as it is branded when they sell movements to other brands) has allowed for a huge influx of more affordable GMTs.
Although not representative of a true GMT function, I think this has kind of served as a launching pad for the complication to reach a wider audience. That is probably why the multiple time zone watch today is more popular than ever! I think almost every brand today has some version of this complication in their stables, regardless of the price segment and/or level of watch reverence they are at.
RC: This democratisation is applaudable. It puts more GMT watches on people’s wrists, as you say. And when you think about it, the term true GMT is somewhat narrow-minded. In terms of output, any watch capable of displaying an extra time zone should qualify as a GMT already. But here we (and the general watch collecting public) are imposing an extra layer of requirement. The once-popular term “traveller’s GMT,” was used quite often, and I find that it completely complemented the desk GMT in terms of pairing. Maybe “true” is just shorter and easier to type than “traveller’s”?
AS: I am not sure if people even think of the true versus desk functionality immediately; as in, it is not the first consideration. To my knowledge, no major brand has both versions, although Grand Seiko has the true GMT in all its ranges, and it showcases the capabilities of the Seiko Watch Group (while also distinguishing between brands).
DG: But I think this is a concept that watch enthusiasts are very familiar with. The “you-get-what-you-pay-for” trope. Like even with chronographs, for example, you can get more affordable chronographs which are made by adding modules on top of the movement versus the more expensive integrated chronograph with all the bells and whistles, column wheel, vertical clutch, etc.
So I suppose there will be every kind of buyer out there: those who will insist that they need a true GMT because of the practical nature of setting the time while travelling and others who will prefer a cheaper desk GMT. Although generally both function quite the same, travelling with a known and expensive GMT watch can be quite precarious in nature. I don’t personally own a GMT, yet, but do you guys travel with your GMTs?
RC: I do, but with all watches when travelling, there is this valid consideration of safety!
AS: I will also say that I do not travel with my GMT watch, any of them, although there is only one now. I only recently started to have issues thinking about safety, as Ruckdee puts it there, with the GMT watch, and that is because mine is currently my favourite watch of all time: the Rolex GMT-Master II. The watch is a tad too recognisable, meaning it might draw the wrong sort of attention. I do not want to be a statistic!
RC: Guys, you know what, we have been focusing entirely on the mechanism. We haven’t discussed aesthetics! There are the sportier GMT watches and then there are the dressier GMT watches. Maybe, we have to factor in the purpose of our travels as well? I have one go-anywhere-do-anything GMT watch on a bracelet that I can wear on either a work trip or a vacation without having to worry about exposure to water and perspiration and such. But for a work trip specifically, this watch doesn’t look quite appropriate with a business suit. So, I always remember to bring my cheapest dress watch on a leather strap with me for those few hours of formality in the evening.
AS: Weirdly, the GMT-Master II is a GADA watch, or it is meant to be! On the other hand, design is the real draw of any GMT watch, like I said, my interest was sparked by the style of the watch and what it symbolised (or symbolises). In the age of the smartwatch and smartphone (and soon, smart pants), having a GMT watch is a delightful little touch of the anachronistic. It says a lot about a person’s taste, and the massive variety (if one includes all variants while still excluding world timers) helps with that. Again, there is this vibe that a specific sort of GMT is the right one, marking you as a horologically superior being!
DG: I mentioned at the start of this chat that when you imagine a GMT, you imagine the GMT-Master II and I think this watch was the spiritual ancestor of let’s say 90% of the GMT watches you see today. The dual-coloured bezel, the arrow hand is some sort of bright colour. The core design remains but every brand has their own little spin on it which is really nice. And in contemporary times where there are so many GMTs abound, it is nice to see the DNA of each brand spliced into a known design language.
Every once in a while, however, and this I really appreciate, you get a brand that comes up with a truly different way of doing a GMT complication. Enter the Parmigiani Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante. When I first saw this thing, I didn’t quite understand it but after digesting it, I think it is an absolutely interesting way of displaying a second time zone.
At the push of a button, a second doppelganger hand appears from underneath the hour hand to display the second time zone and when it is no longer needed, another pusher resets it to hide again under the hour hand. The concept is not foreign, but its execution was entirely novel and I loved it. It definitely doesn’t fall under the true or desk GMT complication.
AS: The Parmigiani Fleurier GMT is amazing because it flips the script on the inherent cachet of the GMT watch. It hides the function (or makes it on-demand if you prefer that wording) and thus tells people quite a different story.
RC: We need to remember also other interpretations like the Geographic from Jaeger-LeCoultre where you simply choose the second time zone to display by city name, or the Hora Mundi from Breguet where only one time is shown at any given moment but you can instantly switch between two pre-selected cities at the push of a button.
DG: I love that even with this seemingly simple concept of tracking a second time zone there is a scale of complexity that watchmakers can still climb. Like, for example, the worldtimers, which are technically a slightly more (okay maybe a lot more) sophisticated GMT, can still be made more complex with functionality improvements. Patek Philippe with their Ref. 5330G had managed to make a worldtimer that would reverse the date by one day if you adjust the watch past the international date line which is in between Midway and Auckland on the watch. Not to mention Bovet, which with its Recital 30, managed to solve the problem of daylight savings time on the display.
I think the popularity of the GMT is because it represents the very base of tracking a second time zone. It is simple and easy to understand, and from there, one has room to grow into more complex mechanisms, like the aforementioned worldtimer complications.
RC: You are absolutely correct but you are also steadily crossing into the world time waters there.
AS: There are those who think of GMTs and worldtimers in the same breadth, because they are traveller’s watches, but Ruckdee is right to urge caution there. The worldtimer does indeed deserve a different discussion because it is different in every way – even the history is not on the same track.
RC: Sometimes I am as shallow as what I can see (or cannot see). A GMT watch is always more legible to me than a world time watch, for example. And the issue of my aging vision aside, I still prefer a GMT watch to a world time one for my own use because I don’t need to know the time in so many cities of the world at once. When travelling, I only need to know the time there and the time back home.
Interestingly, this reminds me of a conversation I had with a Thai publisher who was on the same media trip as me. He shared while at the airport lounge or some place that he didn’t even need a GMT watch because he didn’t want to know the time at home when he was travelling. I can’t remember the wordings exactly but that remark gave me a new perspective. He was a business owner so he had people working for him. I was, and still am, an employee so I have work responsibilities and worries and such. He could travel carefree while I remained shackled to something invisible. Daniel has never heard about this from me, but Ashok clearly had at some point in time.
AS: I love that story Ruckdee! There is certainly something to be said for that way of thinking and it does finish our brief explainer on why we should not bring the worldtimer into this. That sort of watch is really for people who want the time everywhere, all at once.
While that might be my own (notional) preference because I am into horological superiority, I actually go the opposite way and use my dive watch with the bezel adjusted so I have a second time zone. That second time zone is for home time while the hours and minutes are set to local time; it is a pain to adjust without the quickset hour hand movements of a true GMT but I am used to it. Thus, I reveal my basicness and the lie behind my self-confessed need for a worldtimer!
DG: I too travel with a simple three-hand, no date, so it is easier to adjust. But not because I don’t need to know my home time, but rather with data roaming on your mobile phone these days, they automatically display local time when you connect to a foreign mobile service. But with that being said, I still do want to get a GMT because I really enjoy the styling of these watches on the wrist. Bold colours and extra hands! I think this is possibly the main reason for its popularity. Even though the GMT is one of the most practical when it comes to complications, people want it for the way it looks.
RC: We are rational in an irrational way. Let me explain. We know that a phone or a smartwatch can offer most of the functionalities we need in real life, and we do use them from time to time. I have two big digital clocks on my phone when traveling (for wherever I am, and home) and four small analog ones like an old-school hotel wall in their place when not (for Los Angeles, Washington DC, Geneva/Paris and Tokyo, as these cities have either personal or work implications to me). So we are rational in that sense. But, still, as an enthusiast or a collector, we still appreciate the mechanical romance or whatever it is that you would call it in English.
AS: We should start a band and call it My Mechanical Romance!
DG: Very aptly put and in true watch geek fashion. After speaking with you guys so extensively on this topic, it has made me realise that if I ever were to get a GMT, it will have to be a true GMT. No more desk GMTs for me as it doesn’t serve its purpose in the most efficient way. So, where do I get a true GMT that doesn’t burn a hole in my wallet is the most pertinent question on my mind.
AS: Daniel is quite right to point out that our wallets have limits that cannot match our enthusiastic words. For me, it was always a bit disappointing that of the many brands in watchmaking, few had true GMT watches in the mix. Happily for you Daniel, this has really changed in recent years. One of my favourites is the Longines Spirit Zulu and its descendants. The brand did everyone a solid by opening up the true GMT function to different sets of collectors with different mindsets and budgets.
RC: Absolutely agreed on the Longines. I was just playing with the new Spirit Zulu Time 1925 the other week. It is not my favourite interpretation within the Spirit Zulu Time line, but it is very nice in a vintage kind of way, with that rose gold-capped bezel but without bicolour execution on the stainless steel bracelet. You should find the 39 mm size to be highly wearable also, Daniel.
Other than the Longines, I feel compelled to bring up the Mido Ocean Star GMT for two reasons. Firstly, it is absolutely wallet-friendly, per your inquiry. Secondly, it was the very watch that alerted me to the fact about the existence of non-true or desk GMTs out there. I wrongly assumed for longer than a decade that all GMT watches worked in the same way. It was an Inception moment for me … like where I was all this time … why I didn’t know … how I could have been so mistaken.
DG: These are great suggestions! It is great to know that more brands are paying attention to this distinction of GMT types. This means that the market is becoming increasingly more knowledgeable (read nerdy) about watches, and are not buying GMT’s just to have a Rolex alternative on the wrist. Now, if only the Seiko Watch Group would divert their R&D efforts to making a cheap and cheerful true GMT movement and proceed to do the same thing and let it proliferate in the microbrand market, that would be great!
RC: I know what you mean. But I think that will not happen any time soon. I assume this has to do with their differentiation from or tiering with Grand Seiko, whose GMT models are all true GMTs.
DG: Why does watchmaking need to be so complicated?
RC: Watchmaking is not complicated. Business is [ I wish we could insert a crying emoji here ].
DG: So, since you two are the only ones with GMT watches at the moment, what was the reason you bought yours and what were the considerations you took when choosing? I am always curious about the “why”.
AS: The GMT-Master II was like a career-long challenge to buy. First, the Pepsi model was discontinued because of Cerachrom issues and so on and I refuse to consider any other bezel for myself, and then Rolex did me dirty by bringing it back but only in white gold. And when it finally appeared in steel, it was the start of silly season in the secondary market and no one could get a GMT-Master II in steel – even gold was a tall order, and the price was above retail too.
There were alternatives to be had, for sure, but not for me. To be clear, as I mentioned, I never wanted the watch for its functionality and I think the price premium is nonsense! For me, it is all about the mechanical romance because the Pepsi GMT-Master II is the first watch I wanted, as a child. Ok, that is objectively weird but this is a watch magazine and I am one of the editors so what do you expect.
RC: Wow … I think “mechanical romance” is making an impression on you as a phrase.
Daniel, for me, I find the notion of knowing the time in another place endearing in a professional way. I think this has to do with me growing up in a household where both parents worked with people in other countries on a daily basis. My dad was in the airline and then hospitality industry. My mom’s entire career was at a single international organisation with a regional office in India and the headquarters in Geneva. I grew up learning about time zone differences before I knew how to drive a car. This is probably the first time I share these anecdotes in print. And I hope my mom doesn’t see this because she will still complain about me sharing family details in a public location. But moms are moms no matter how old you already are, right?
That was the why. As for actual considerations when choosing, I think it is the overall design of the watch first, as with any purchase, then legibility at a glance, and then whether it is a true GMT but I must restate that it is not an absolute deal-breaking criterion. My Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT is not a true GMT. I got it because I was in the iconic or otherwise shaped watches phase of my collecting life (i.e. one watch from each brand), and I felt that the addition of the 24-hour black/red rotating bezel and the red-tipped GMT hand went well with the aviation theme of the watch.
DG: Thank you for sharing this!I absolutely love that both your reasons for wanting a GMT are so deeply rooted in nostalgia. I suppose the GMT is a slightly more emotional complication compared with the rest, it was invented at a time where aspirations were rife. I think the brands should really consider hiring you guys as ambassadors because after a few hours of conversation, I think I now really need a GMT, a true GMT at that, and it has been significantly bumped up on my to-buy list.
RC: We are now exactly one hour and 54 minutes into our writing session. Give me one more hour and you will want to be wearing your newly acquired GMT watch, true or desk, and taking a wristshot above the prime meridian in Greenwich. I know it is corny but, as Boss Ashok said, this is a watch magazine, right?

DG: Well put, now, how do I get my wallet to agree with my aspirations? But I suppose I will solicit that advice at a different time or we will all be stuck here longer still.
RC: You are young and there is so much time ahead. There is no need to rush like us. And we are always happy to help you bounce next purchase ideas, whether it is a GMT or another kind of watch.
