ในโลกแห่งนาฬิกาที่มีแบรนด์น้อยใหญ่ต่างๆ มากมายนั้น มีอยู่แบรนด์หนึ่งที่เราพบว่ามีความสามารถในการทำให้นักสะสมเกิดความประทับใจครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่าด้วยความคิดสร้างสรรค์ที่อยู่นอกกรอบของมรดกที่ตกทอดกันมาในสารบบของงานประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาแบบดั้งเดิม และแบรนด์ที่ว่านั้นก็คือ Van Cleef & Arpels ซึ่งมีสำนักงานใหญ่อยู่ที่ปารีส และมีโรงงานประกอบนาฬิกาแบบเต็มรูปแบบอยู่ที่เจนีวา
Poetic Complications คือชื่อของคอลเลคชั่นที่รวบรวมเอาผลงานที่มีเรื่องราวที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์เหล่านี้เข้าไว้ด้วยกัน คอลเลคชั่นนี้ได้รับการก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 2006 เพื่อฉลองวาระครบรอบหนึ๋งศตวรรษของแบรนด์ นับแต่นั้นมา นาฬิกา Poetic Complications รุ่นต่างๆ และปรัชญา Poetry of Time ที่ครอบไว้อยู่ก็ได้นำพาให้ Van Cleef & Arpels มีชื่อเสียงเด่นชัดขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ผ่านทางเรือนเวลาและสิ่งประดิษฐ์ออโตมาตอนที่ไม่เหมือนใคร โดยผลิตภัณฑ์แต่ละชิ้นนั้นบอกเล่าเรื่องราวจากจักรวาลต่างๆ กันของแบรนด์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นธรรมชาติ ดาราศาสตร์ หรือที่ขาดไม่ได้เลยก็คือเรื่องราวของความรัก

Cadenas ไม่ใช่นาฬิกาประเภทซีเครทวอทช์เพราะว่านาฬิการุ่นนี้ไม่มีชิ้นส่วนที่ปิดซ่อนหน้าปัดเหมือนกับ Ludo หรือ Perlée ของ Van Cleef & Arpels เอง แต่ด้วยรูปลักษณ์แล้วหากไม่ใช่คนเล่นนาฬิกาก็น่าจะไม่สามารถบอกได้ว่าแท้จริงแล้ว Cadenas คือเรือนเวลาจริงๆ เพราะรูปทรงของ Cadenas นั้นดูเป็นเครื่องประดับมากกว่า โครงสร้างของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ประกอบด้วยตัวเรือนทรงยาวที่มีแรงบันดาลใจมาจากแม่กุญแจ มีหน้าปัดนาฬิกาขนาดเล็กที่หันเข้าหาตัวเจ้าของนาฬิกา และสวมใส่บนข้อมือด้วยสายนาฬิกาแบบดับเบิ้ลสเนคเชนที่มีบานพับซ่อน

และบทความนี้จะสมบูรณ์ไม่ได้เลยหากเราไม่เอ่ยถึงสิ่งประดิษฐ์ในกลุ่ม Extraordinary Objects ที่มีรากฐานมาจากเครื่องใช้ต่างๆ นอกเหนือจากจิวเวลรีที่ Van Cleef & Arpels ผลิตตั้งแต่ยุคก่อตั้งแบรนด์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นกล่องเครื่องแป้ง กล่องบุหรี่ หรือขวดน้ำหอม เรื่อยไปจนถึงนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะขนาดเล็กและอีกมากมาย
คอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Objects เริ่มต้นขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการในปี ค.ศ. 2017 เมื่อ Van Cleef & Arpels เปิดตัวสิ่งประดิษฐ์ที่มีชื่อว่า Automate Fée Ondine ซึ่งมีทั้งฟังก์ชั่นในการบอกเวลาและหุ่นออโตมาตอนที่เคลื่อนไหวได้อย่างน่าทึ่ง ในปีนี้ Naissance de l’Amour คือภาคต่อของผลงานที่มาก่อนหน้า ได้แก่ Bouton d’Or (ค.ศ. 2024) Éveil du Cyclamen (ค.ศ. 2023) และ Rêveries de Berylline (ค.ศ. 2022) ซึ่งทั้งหมดใช้ชุดกลไกออโตมาตอนที่ออกแบบร่วมกับคุณฟรองซัวส์ จูโนด์ซึ่งเป็นช่างประดิษฐ์ออโตมาตอนชื่อดังจากเมืองแซงต์ครัวซ์ ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์

ส่วนทางด้าน Planétarium นั้นก็เป็นเวอร์ชั่นใหม่ของผลงานที่เคยออกมาก่อนหน้าแล้วอีกเช่นกัน จุดเริ่มต้นอยู่ที่นาฬิกา Midnight Planétarium เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2014 ที่ Van Cleef & Arpels พยายามย่อส่วนกลไกแพลเนทาเรียมหรือท้องฟ้าจำลองลงบนไปไว้บนหน้าปัดของนาฬิกาข้อมือ แล้วในปี ค.ศ. 2022 จึงมี Planétarium ตั้งโต๊ะขนาดใหญ่ถึง 66.5 ซม. ออกมาให้ทุกคนได้รู้สึกทึ่งกัน
และเวอร์ชั่นล่าสุดของ Planétarium ในปีนี้ก็นำเสนอรายละเอียดที่แตกต่าง เริ่มต้นที่การใช้สัญลักษณ์ตามตำนานเทพปกรณัมมาตกแต่งดาวเคราะห์ต่างๆ เช่น เปลือกหอยสำหรับดาวศุกร์ ลูกศรสำหรับดาวอังคาร สายฟ้าสำหรับดาวพฤหัสบดี โดยที่ดาวเคราะห์แต่ละดวงนั้นก็เจียระไนมาจากอัญมณีชนิดต่างๆ และโคจรรอบดวงอาทิตย์โรสโกลด์ตกแต่งด้วยสเปสซาไรท์ แซฟไฟร์สีเหลืองและเพชร ด้วยความเร็วเท่าความเป็นจริงในอวกาศ เริ่มตั้งแต่เร็วที่สุดคือดาวพุธที่ใช้เวลา 88 วันต่อรอบไปจนถึงช้าที่สุดคือดาวเสาร์ที่ใช้เวลา 29.5 ปีต่อรอบ
รายละเอียดที่น่าสนใจอีกประการหนึ่งก็คือการใช้ลาปิสลาซูลีที่มีสีน้ำเงินเหมือนกับอวกาศในจินตนาการในการผลิตวงแหวนทั้ง 15 ที่ประกอบกันเป็นหน้าปัดของออโตมาตอนเครื่องนี้ซึ่งบอกเวลาด้วยดาวหางที่จะปรากฏตัวขึ้นมาทำหน้าที่เพียงชั่วครู่หนึ่งแล้วหลบลงไปอยู่ข้างใต้อีกครั้ง

In the vast and exceptional world of watchmaking, one maison stands apart for their remarkable ability to captivate connoisseurs time and again with the most imaginative creations, transcending the boundaries of traditional horology. That maison is Van Cleef & Arpels, headquartered in Paris, with a fully integrated watch manufacture in Geneva.
These enchanting creations are often found in the Poetic Complications collection, which was established in 2006 to mark the maison’s centenary. Since then, this unique repertoire of watches – alongside the overarching Poetry of Time philosophy – has elevated the maison’s status through a series of wristwatches and automatons unlike anything else on the market. These pieces narrate stories drawn from various universes, including nature, astronomy, and, most enduringly, love.
A notable example is the Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux watch, introduced in 2010, which tells the story of two lovers who meet at midnight – and again at midday – on a Parisian bridge. The two figures are, in fact, retrograde hands that indicate the hours and minutes respectively, with the entire dial serving as a stage for this romantic choreography.
This year, the night sky over Paris once again sets the stage for Van Cleef & Arpels to recount the tender tale of their iconic lovers, brought to life this year in a timepiece named Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate.
Although 15 years have passed in the real world, time has moved only slightly forward in the imaginative realm of the Poetic Complications collection. The young man and woman who once met at midnight on the Pont des Arts have grown a little older. This time, they are depicted sharing a moment together at an open-air guinguette-style dance – a popular pastime in the outskirts of 19th century Paris. As always, Van Cleef & Arpels introduces a delightful element to impress in this creation: a newly developed automaton mechanism that gently draws the couple towards one another for a kiss at both noon and midnight, or upon the press of a button located on the side of the case at the 8 o’clock position.
The Bal des Amoureux Automate tells the time via a double retrograde display, with a pair of stars positioned at the top of the dial. The star on the left indicates the hours, while the one on the right shows the minutes. Once their arcs are completed, each star returns instantly to its starting position for the next round of service.
The dial comprises no fewer than five stacked layers, each meticulously decorated using traditional métiers d’art techniques to bring the romantic scene to life with dimension and vitality. For instance, the background of the cityscape is rendered in grisaille enamel, creating clouds and a night sky that subtly transitions from white to blue to deep navy, punctuated by tiny yellow dots representing glowing decorative lamps. Each dial takes approximately 40 hours to complete, including hand-painting and multiple rounds of kiln-firing. Meanwhile, the cobblestone pavement at the base of the dial is intricately engraved in white gold, and crafted specifically for this creation.
The male and female figurines are separate components, each with independently articulated arms. When assembled above the dial, the man’s hand gently overlaps the woman’s, deliberately obscuring the linkage from view. Once the automaton is activated, drawing the two figures closer, their arms naturally lower before the couple finally leans in for a kiss.
Van Cleef & Arpels devoted four years to developing this remarkably precise mechanism entirely in-house. It had to be sufficiently slim and compact as well in order to be integrated onto the self-winding movement without increasing too much its overall size. Only a handful of watchmakers at the brand’s workshop on the outskirts of Geneva are trained to assemble such a sophisticated automaton.
The 38 mm white gold case of the Lady Arpels Bal des Amoureux Automate is adorned with 122 diamonds totalling 2.82 carats, set along the bezel, lugs, and crown for added brilliance. It is worn on a blue alligator strap that echoes the Parisian night sky, with an additional alligator strap in a colour of the client’s choice offered at the time of purchase.
For those seeking something with an even greater sense of jewellery artistry, Van Cleef & Arpels offers the Cadenas, an iconic design that first appeared in 1935 – exactly 90 years ago.
Strictly speaking, the Cadenas is not a secret watch, as it does not feature a cover to conceal the dial like the maison’s Ludo or Perlée models. Still, to the untrained eye, it might not be immediately recognisable as a watch. Its form leans more towards jewellery than a timepiece. Inspired by the shape of a padlock, the elongated case of the Cadenas features a small dial angled towards the wearer. It is paired with a double snake chain bracelet with a hidden clasp.
This year’s new Cadenas model is crafted in yellow gold with a case measuring 26 x 14 mm and a matching yellow gold bracelet. It is fully set with diamonds in a snow-setting style across the case, clasp, and small white gold dial – totalling 1,491 stones and 7.65 carats. In addition, 14 princess-cut blue sapphires, weighing a total of 2.22 carats, are arranged in a row along the top of the case and clasp. Historically, Van Cleef & Arpels has used coloured gemstones in this arrangement on the Cadenas as early as in 1936 with rubies and 1943 with emeralds.
Our report on Van Cleef & Arpels novelties cannot be complete without exploring their Extraordinary Objects. This traces back to their non-jewellery creations such as vanity boxes, cigarette cases, perfume bottles, small table clocks and more in the early years of the brand.
The Extraordinary Objects collection was formally introduced in 2017 with the unveiling of the Automate Fée Ondine, an astonishing piece combining a time display with the animation of an automaton. This year, Naissance de l’Amour continues the lineage of the Bouton d’Or (2024), the Éveil du Cyclamen (2023), and the Rêveries de Berylline (2022) which were all created in collaboration with François Junod, the celebrated automaton maker based in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland.
The name Naissance de l’Amour or “Birth of Love” is telling of the theme. When activated, a plume of feathers opens to reveal a diamond-faced Cupid nestled on a cloud. The figure rises, rotates, and flutters its wings, decorated with the plique-à-jour enamel technique, in a delicate and lifelike display, before the entire scene closes once again. The piece is set upon a base carved from petrified palmwood, marking the maison’s first use of this material.
Also returning this year is a new version of the Planétarium. Van Cleef & Arpels first experimented with the miniaturisation on a planetarium in 2014 with the Midnight Planétarium wristwatch. A larger scale, deskbound planetarium only followed in 2022 – it measured measuring a striking 66.5 cm in diameter and left people in awe.
The latest version of the Planétarium is presented with refreshed aesthetic details. Mythological symbols now grace each planet, for example, a shell for Venus, arrows for Mars, and, lightning bolts for Jupiter. The planets themselves are sculpted from various gemstones and orbit a rose gold sun adorned with spessartites, yellow sapphires and diamonds, moving at speeds true to their real celestial orbits, from Mercury’s 88-day revolution to Saturn’s 29.5-year journey.
Another captivating detail is the use of lapis lazuli, whose appearance is reminiscent of the imagined cosmos, for the 15 concentric rings that form the automaton’s dial. Indicating the time is the shooting star that appears briefly during an animation and disappears once more beneath the dial.
These are but a few of the remarkable novelties Van Cleef & Arpels unveiled at Watches and Wonders Geneva this past April. And for those who find their hearts stirred by any of these creations, a visit to a Van Cleef & Arpels boutique is strongly encouraged. There, one can discover the intricate details that define a maison unlike any other, within an atmosphere meticulously designed for such encounters.
