สองอารมณ์ที่แตกต่างของเรือนเวลารุ่นใหม่ล่าสุดของ Grand Seiko ในปีนี้

Grand Seiko ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแค่ความภาคภูมิใจของชาวญี่ปุ่น แต่ควรจะเรียกว่าเป็นหน้าตาและศักดิ์ศรีของชาวเอเชียโดยรวมด้วย เพราะว่าในบรรดาแบรนด์นาฬิกาภายในงาน Watches and Wonders Geneva ทั้งหมดจำนวน 60 แบรนด์ในปีนี้มีเพียง 8 แบรนด์ที่มีฐานการผลิตนอกประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ และมีเพียงแค่แบรนด์เดียวเท่านั้นที่มาจากนอกทวีปยุโรปนั่นก็คือ Grand Seiko จากประเทศญี่ปุ่นนั่นเอง
ประวัติศาสตร์ของ Grand Seiko สามารถสืบย้อนกลับไปได้ถึงปี ค.ศ. 1960 โดยความตั้งใจของบริษัทในเวลานั้นคือการพัฒนานาฬิกาที่เป็นเลิศในแง่ความเที่ยงตรง ความทนทานและความงาม นาฬิกา Grand Seiko ชนะการประกวดความเที่ยงตรงต่างๆ ในญี่ปุ่นอย่างรวดเร็วก่อนที่จะเริ่มเข้าร่วมการประกวดความเที่ยงตรงกับหอดูดาวที่สวิตเซอร์แลนด์ในปี ค.ศ. 1964 ในการนี้ Grand Seiko ก็ยังมีการปรับปรุงเครื่องของตนอย่างต่อเนื่องจนกระทั่งสามารถคว้าชัยอันดับหนึ่งมาได้ในปี ค.ศ. 1968 ซึ่งเป็นปีสุดท้ายที่มีการประกวดดังกล่าวในประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์
แล้วในปี ค.ศ. 2017 จึงค่อยมีการประกาศแยก Grand Seiko ออกมาตั้งเป็นแบรนด์อิสระอย่างเต็มรูปแบบเพื่อทำการตลาดในแนวทางที่เฉพาะเจาะจง โดยมีปรัชญา Nature of Time ที่ว่าด้วยเรื่องของเวลาในมุมของวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นเป็นเครื่องชี้นำ ซึ่งเราจะสังเกตเห็นได้ชัดเจนที่สุดบนหน้าปัดของนาฬิกา Grand Seiko ที่มักจะนำเสนอลวดลายจากธรรมชาติบริเวณใกล้กับที่ตั้งของโรงงาน และสีสันแห่งช่วงเวลาหรือฤดูกาลต่างๆ ตามสำนวนญี่ปุ่น “อิชิโกะ อิชิเอะ” ที่สื่อว่า “ทุกการพบเจอและทุกประสบการณ์นั้นมีความพิเศษในตนเอง และมันจะไม่มีวันเกิดซ้ำในรูปแบบเดิมได้อีก”
สำหรับนาฬิกา Grand Seiko รุ่นที่ปรากฏบนภาพปกนี้น่าจะเป็นเรือนเวลาที่โดดเด่นและดุดันที่สุดรุ่นหนึ่งภายในงาน Watches and Wonders ปีนี้ เพราะว่า Tokyo Lion Tentagraph หรือ SLGC009 จาก Sport Collection ที่ตอบโจทย์ความต้องการของคนที่สนใจนาฬิการุ่น Tentagraph ของ Grand Seiko อยู่แล้ว แต่ก็อยากได้ตัวเรือนที่แหวกแนวกว่าทรงกลมธรรมดา
สิงโตนั้นเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ Grand Seiko มาตั้งแต่การเปิดตัวครั้งแรกในปี ค.ศ. 1960 แล้วในปี ค.ศ. 2019 จึงมีการนำเอาความน่าเกรงขามของสิงโตมาตีความใหม่ในรูปแบบของตัวเรือนนาฬิกาที่มีเหลี่ยมมุมคมคายสุดสปอร์ต และหน้าปัดนาฬิกาลวดลายละเอียดอ่อนซึ่งเมื่อพิจารณาดูดีๆ แล้วจะคล้ายกับขนสิงโต จนเกิดเป็นไลน์นาฬิกาที่มีชื่อเรียกอย่างเป็นทางการว่า Tokyo Lion ส่วนทางด้าน Tentagraph นั้นก็เป็นชื่อเรียกของเครื่องนาฬิการุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 9SC5 ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องโครโนกราฟแบบจักรกลรุ่นแรกของ Grand Seiko ที่เปิดตัวเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2023 และเป็นเครื่องที่ทำงานแบบความถี่สูงหรือไฮบีท ความเที่ยงตรงอยู่ในเกณฑ์ +5/-3 วินาทีต่อวัน และกำลังลานสำรองยาวนานถึง 72 ชั่วโมง
และ Tokyo Lion Tentagraph รุ่นใหม่นี้ก็เป็นการรวมตัวกันของรูปลักษณ์และกลไกที่แข็งแกร่งของ Grand Seiko จนเกิดเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ไม่เหมือนใคร ตัวเรือนผลิตจากวัสดุบริลเลียนท์ฮาร์ดไทเทเนียมซึ่งมีความเปล่งปลั่งในตัวสูงกว่าไทเทเนียมทั่วไปจึงยิ่งทำให้ Grand Seiko แสดงศักยภาพในการขัดแต่งตัวเรือนเป็นลายเส้นแบบแฮร์ไลน์ตัดกับแบบเงาด้วยเทคนิคซารัตสึได้อย่างเต็มที่ แล้วเมื่อ Tokyo Lion รุ่นนี้เปลี่ยนสไตล์ขอบตัวเรือนจากวงแหวนเซรามิกสีดำเป็นขอบตัวเรือนไทเทเนียมจึงยิ่งเพิ่มระดับชั้นและมิติให้กับงานขัดแต่งทุกครั้งที่เราพลิกข้อมือ และเราอยากให้คุณสังเกตว่าปุ่มกดของระบบโครโนกราฟได้รับการออกแบบใหม่แล้วด้วย จากเดิมที่เป็นปุ่มทรงกลมก็กลายเป็นปุ่มทรงเหลี่ยมที่สะท้อนเส้นสายของตัวเรือนอย่างกลมกลืน
ในเรื่องของขนาดนั้นขอให้คุณผู้อ่านอย่าเพิ่งตกใจว่าเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางจะเป็น 43 มม. และความหนาจะเป็น 15.6 มม. เพราะจากที่เราได้ลองสวมเรือนจริงแล้วพบว่า Tokyo Lion Tentagraph รุ่นนี้มีสัดส่วนที่เหมาะสม เชื่อว่าคนที่ใส่นาฬิกาสปอร์ตทรงกลมขนาด 42 มม. ทั่วไปได้ก็จะใส่ Tokyo Lion Tentagraph รุ่นนี้ได้ เนื่องจากว่าตัวเรือนไม่มีขายื่นออกมา ฝาหลังมีความโค้งเล็กน้อย และสายยางของนาฬิการุ่นใหม่นี้ก็ได้รับการออกแบบมาให้โอบรับข้อมือได้อย่างลงตัว ทั้งยังผลิตจากวัสดุสูตรใหม่ที่ความแข็งแรงเป็นพิเศษด้วย แถมยังมีฝากลูกเล่นในรูปของอุ้งเท้าสิงโตไว้บนด้านในของสายซึ่งจะเห็นได้ต่อเมื่อถอดนาฬิกาออกมาวางไว้เท่านั้น
และแน่นอนว่าความชัดเจนในการอ่านค่าต่างๆ ย่อมต้องเป็นหนึ่งในปัจจัยสำคัญของการออกแบบ เราจึงจะเห็นได้ว่าหน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่นนี้มีหลักชั่วโมงขนาดใหญ่เป็นพิเศษ รับกับเข็มบอกเวลารูปทรงเข้าชุดกัน วงหน้าปัดย่อยทั้ง 3 วงได้รับการออกแบบให้ดูตัดกับพื้นหลังที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากขนสิงโตที่พลิ้วตามสายลมอย่างชัดเจน ทั้งยังมีการใช้สีที่แตกต่างกันตามฟังก์ชั่นการทำงานด้วย กล่าวคือ วงวินาทีต่อเนื่องของระบบบอกเวลาที่ตำแหน่ง 3 นาฬิกาจะมีสีน้ำตาลเหมือนพื้นหน้าปัดและไม่มีตัวเลขใดๆ ส่วนวงทดเวลาของระบบโครโนกราฟที่ตำแหน่ง 9 และ 6 นาฬิกาจะเป็นสีดำ มีสเกลตัวเลข และมีเข็มสีแดงเหมือนกับเข็มวินาทีของระบบโครโนกราฟที่อยู่ตรงกลางหน้าปัด
แต่หากคุณกำลังมองหานาฬิกาที่มีความเอฟรี่เดย์ ดูสุขุมคุมโทน คุณก็น่าจะชอบผลงานใหม่อีกรุ่นหนึ่งของ Grand Seiko ในปีนี้ก็คือ Spring Drive U.F.A. จาก Evolution 9 Collection
Spring Drive เป็นนวัตกรรมที่ไม่เหมือนใครของ Grand Seiko พื้นฐานคือเครื่องนาฬิกาจักรกลที่มีเมนสปริงเป็นแหล่งพลังงาน แต่ว่าใช้เรกูเลเตอร์แบบอิเล็กทรอนิกส์เพื่อความเที่ยงตรงสูงในระดับเดียวกันกับเครื่องนาฬิกาควอตซ์ เข็มวินาทีของเครื่อง Spring Drive จะไม่เดินเป็นสเตปสั้นๆ 6-8 ครั้งต่อ 1 วินาทีเหมือนนาฬิกาจักรกลทั่วไป และจะไม่เดินเป็นสเตปยาว 1 ครั้งต่อ 1 วินาทีเหมือนนาฬิกาควอตซ์ แต่จะเดินแบบไหลเรียบเนียนไม่เป็นสเตปให้สายตามองเห็นการหยุดรอจังหวะใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น
ในขณะที่มาตรฐานโครโนมิเตอร์ของนาฬิกาจักรกลปกติจะใช้เกณฑ์ +6/-4 วินาที “ต่อวัน” นั้น เครื่อง Spring Drive ของ Grand Seiko ในปัจจุบันได้รับการพัฒนาให้มีความเที่ยงตรงอยู่ในเกณฑ์ +/-10 วินาที “ต่อเดือน” แล้วในนาฬิการุ่น Spring Drive U.F.A. หรือ Ultra Fine Accuracy นี้ก็ยิ่งเหนือชั้นขึ้นอีกไปด้วยการประกาศเกณฑ์ความเที่ยงตรง +/-20 วินาที “ต่อปี” ด้วยการใช้เครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 9RB2 กำลังลานสำรอง 72 ชั่วโมงที่ได้รับการปรับปรุงเป็นพิเศษด้วยแผงไอซีดีไซน์ใหม่และการนำชุดออสซิเลเตอร์และเซ็นเซอร์เข้าไปบรรจุไว้ในซีลสุญญากาศ เพื่อควบคุมอุณหภูมิให้คงที่ที่สุดและเพื่อลดการรบกวนจากปัจจัยภายนอกอย่างเช่นไฟฟ้าสถิตให้เหลือน้อยที่สุด
ภายในตัวเรือน Evolution 9 ขนาด 37 มม. ที่บางเพียง 11.4 มม. นั้นมีหน้าปัดที่สะท้อนปรัชญา Nature of Time เช่นกัน ครั้งนี้เป็นลวดลายที่มีชื่อว่า Ice Forest ที่นำเสนอทิวทัศน์ของมวลหมู่ต้นไม้ที่มีเกล็ดน้ำแข็งเคลือบช่วงฤดูหนาวในป่าใกล้กับ Shinshu Watch Studio แห่งจังหวัดนากาโนะซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิดของนาฬิกาเครื่อง Spring Drive ของ Grand Seiko ทั้งหมด
ขณะนี้นาฬิกา Spring Drive U.F.A. มี 2 รุ่นด้วยกัน ได้แก่ SLGB001 ซึ่งเป็นลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นจำนวน 80 เรือน หน้าปัดสีฟ้าอ่อน ตัวเรือนเป็นแพลทตินัม สวมใส่ด้วยสายหนังจระเข้สีดำ และ SLGB003 ซึ่งเป็นรุ่นผลิตระยะยาวปกติ หน้าปัดสีเทาเจือฟ้าจางๆ ตัวเรือนและสายผลิตจากไฮอินเทนซิตี้ไทเทเนียม และนี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ Grand Seiko มีระบบปรับความยาวสายระหว่างวันภายในบานพับ 3 ระดับรวม 6 มม.

Grand Seiko is not merely a source of national pride for the Japanese, but, in a way, a symbol of dignity for Asia as a whole. Among the 60 brands exhibiting at Watches and Wonders Geneva this year, only eight have production bases outside Switzerland, and just one brand comes from outside Europe altogether: Grand Seiko of Japan.
The origins of Grand Seiko date back to 1960, when the company set out to create a watch that would excel in precision, durability and beauty. The brand quickly established their reputation by winning timekeeping competitions in Japan, before entering international chronometry contests held at observatories in Switzerland starting in 1964. Through continuous improvement, Grand Seiko ultimately achieved first place in 1968 – the final year such competitions were held in Switzerland.
In 2017, Grand Seiko was formally established as an independent brand, with their own distinct marketing direction guided by the philosophy of the “Nature of Time”. This concept reflects the Japanese cultural view of time and is most clearly expressed through the brand’s dials, which often depict natural scenery near the brand’s manufacturing sites, or seasonal hues inspired by the Japanese expression “ichi-go ichi-e”, meaning “every meeting, every experience is special in some ways. It can never happen in the same way again”.
The Grand Seiko watch featured on this cover is arguably one of the boldest and most powerful timepieces unveiled at this year’s Watches and Wonders: the Tokyo Lion Tentagraph (SLGC009) from the Sport Collection. It caters to enthusiasts who are intrigued by Grand Seiko’s Tentagraph movement but prefer a more unconventional alternative to the traditional round case.
The lion has symbolised Grand Seiko since their founding in 1960, but in 2019, this majestic creature was reinterpreted as a sharply angular, sportive case design, paired with dials featuring an intricate pattern that resembles lion’s mane. This design approach gave rise to what is now officially known as the Tokyo Lion line. The Tentagraph, meanwhile, refers to Grand Seiko’s first mechanical chronograph movement, launched in 2023. The high-beat Calibre 9SC5 offers an accuracy of +5/-3 seconds per day, and delivers an impressive 72-hour power reserve.
The new Tokyo Lion Tentagraph unites Grand Seiko’s bold aesthetics with robust engineering in a singular creation. Its case is crafted from Brilliant Hard Titanium, a material more radiant than conventional titanium, which allows Grand Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polishing to shine in contrast with hairline finishing. Additionally, by replacing the previous black ceramic bezel with a titanium one, the watch gains an added sense of depth and dimension that plays with light each time the wrist is turned. Please take note also that the chronograph pushers have been redesigned from rounded buttons to angular forms, seamlessly echoing the case’s geometric lines.
While the watch may appear large on paper, with a diameter of 43 mm and a thickness of 15.6 mm, readers should not be alarmed. Having tried on the actual piece, we can confirm that its proportions are well-balanced. Those accustomed to wearing 42 mm round sports watches should find this model similarly manageable, thanks to its lack of protruding lugs, subtly curved caseback, and a newly designed rubber strap that wraps comfortably around the wrist. This strap is made from a new, highly durable material and features a hidden detail in the form of a lion paw print on the underside that is only visible when the watch is taken off.
As with all Grand Seiko watches, legibility remains a top priority. The dial is designed with extra large hour markers and hands of matching form. All three subdials stand out clearly against the background pattern that is inspired by lion’s mane swaying in the wind, and colour-coded for practical usage. The continuous second dial of timekeeping system at 3 o’clock is rendered in the same brown as the overall dial and features no numerals. The chronograph counters at 9 and 6 o’clock are black with numerals and red hands to match the central chronograph second hand.
However, if you are seeking an everyday timepiece with a more reserved character, another highlight from Grand Seiko this year is the Spring Drive U.F.A. from the Evolution 9 Collection.
Spring Drive is a unique innovation from Grand Seiko that combines a traditional mainspring-driven mechanical movement with an electronic regulator to achieve quartz-level accuracy. Unlike mechanical watches whose seconds hands move in 6-8 steps per second, or quartz watches that tick once per second, the seconds hand of a Spring Drive glides smoothly across the dial with no perceptible pause.
Whereas standard mechanical chronometers are certified within a tolerance of +6/-4 seconds “per day”, Grand Seiko’s current Spring Drive movements are accurate to within +/-10 seconds “per month”. The new Spring Drive U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Accuracy) takes this a step further, boasting an accuracy of +/-20 seconds “per year”, thanks to the enhanced Calibre 9RB2. This movement features a redesigned IC board and incorporates the oscillator and sensor in a vacuum-sealed package to stabilise temperature and minimise the effects of external interference such as static electricity.
Housed in a 37 mm Evolution 9 case with a thickness of just 11.4 mm, the watch expresses the Nature of Time philosophy through the Ice Forest dial pattern. It depicts a frozen forest landscape near the Shinshu Watch Studio in Nagano Prefecture which is home to all Grand Seiko Spring Drive timepieces.
The Spring Drive U.F.A. is currently available in two versions. The SLGB001 is a limited edition of 80 pieces, featuring a light blue dial, platinum case and black alligator strap. The SLGB003 is a regularproduction model with a pale bluish-grey dial, case and bracelet made from High-Intensity Titanium. This model also marks the first time Grand Seiko has incorporated a micro-adjustment system into the clasp, allowing for three levels of bracelet length adjustment across a 6 mm range.
Beyond the timepieces themselves, Grand Seiko continues to expand their global network of luxury boutiques, reinforcing their long-term vision.
