Seiko เริ่มผลิตนาฬิกาดำน้ำเป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1965 ดังนั้นปีนี้จึงถือเป็นปีครบรอบ 60 ปีแห่งความสำเร็จดังกล่าว ในการนี้ Seiko ก็ได้เปิดตัวผลิตภัณฑ์ออกมา 3 รุ่นเพื่อเอาใจกลุ่มแฟนคลับที่ติดตามมาโดยตลอด ได้แก่ Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch Seiko Diver’s Watch 60th Anniversary Limited Edition (SPB511J) และ Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT Watch Seiko Diver’s Watch 60th Anniversary Limited Edition (SPB509J) จำนวนรุ่นละ 6,000 เรือน ตลอดจน Prospex Marinemaster Professional Seiko Diver’s Watch 60th Anniversary Limited Edition (SLA081J) ตัวเรือนและสายไทเทเนียมซึ่งสามารถกันน้ำได้ลึกถึงระดับ 600 เมตร ทำงานด้วยเครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 8L45 และจำกัดจำนวนการผลิตเพียงแค่ 600 เรือนเท่านั้น
และก่อนที่งานเปิดตัวลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นทั้ง 3 รุ่นในประเทศไทยจะเริ่มขึ้นบนเรือสิริมหรรณพที่เอเชียทีค World of Watches Thailand และสื่ออื่นอีกจำนวนหนึ่งก็มีโอกาสได้สัมภาษณ์คุณทาคูมิ คิชิโนะ ผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายออกแบบผลิตภัณฑ์ Seiko Prospex เกี่ยวกับประสบการณ์ในการออกแบบนาฬิการุ่นต่างๆ โดยบริหารความสมดุลระหว่างการคิดค้นสิ่งใหม่ที่ก้าวหน้าควบคู่กับการรักษาไว้ซึ่งรายละเอียดที่เป็นดั่งมรดกตกทอดมาจากอดีต

เราอยากให้คุณเริ่มต้นด้วยการเล่าถึงหน้าที่และบทบาทของคุณในการพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์รุ่นใหม่ๆ
ที่ Seiko เรามีผลิตภัณฑ์หลายชื่อแบรนด์ และขณะนี้ผมเป็นผู้นำทีมออกแบบของ Prospex, Presage และ Astron ครับ ในฐานะผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายออกแบบ ผมมีหน้าที่ต้องชี้นำแนวทางในการสร้างสรรค์และทำให้เกิดงานออกแบบที่มีคุณภาพสูงสุดอยู่เสมอ และผมจะต้องให้คำแนะนำกับนักออกแบบตลอดจนขับเคลื่อนกลยุทธ์เพื่อให้เกิดวิสัยทัศน์แห่งการสร้างสรรค์ในแบรนด์ต่างๆ ของเราด้วย

ในฐานะดีไซเนอร์ คุณตัดสินใจอย่างไรว่าจะปรับเปลี่ยนหรือตีความองค์ประกอบใดใหม่ เวลาที่คุณออกแบบนาฬิการุ่นใหม่บนพื้นฐานของรุ่นคลาสสิก

อะไรคือดีเอ็นเอหลักของดีไซน์ Seiko Prospex
เราเชื่อว่า Seiko Prospex มอบคุณค่าหลัก 4 ประการแก่ลูกค้า ได้แก่ สเปคระดับมืออาชีพ ความพึ่งพาได้ เรื่องราวแห่งความท้าทาย และความรู้สึกผจญภัย Prospex ได้รับความไว้วางใจจากนักดำน้ำระดับอาชีพจำนวนมาก เคยมีส่วนร่วมสนับสนุนการสำรวจมากมาย และมีประวัติศาสตร์ในการก้าวข้ามขีดจำกัดต่างๆ มาอย่างโชกโชน เรายังคงไว้ซึ่งความถ่อมตนแม้ว่าจะมีเกียรติประวัติดังกล่าวนี้ และยังคงมุ่งมั่นที่จะพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องเพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการของยุคสมัย

ขั้นตอนที่ยากที่สุดในการออกแบบนาฬิการุ่นฉลอง 60 ปีในครั้งนี้คืออะไร
นาฬิกาทั้งรุ่นที่ใช้เครื่อง 6R และ 8L มีลวดลายหน้าปัดที่ใช้เวลาพัฒนานานเป็นพิเศษ อย่างที่ทราบกันดีว่า หน้าปัดของนาฬิกาดำน้ำ Seiko นั้นได้รับการออกแบบมาเพื่อให้มีความทนทานโดยเฉพาะ หลักชั่วโมงและแผ่นหน้าปัดขึ้นรูปจากวัสดุชิ้นเดียวกันเพื่อให้มั่นใจได้ว่าหลักชั่วโมงก็จะไม่หลุดออกแม้จะได้รับแรงกระแทกอย่างรุนแรง
เมื่อทีมวางแผนผลิตภัณฑ์และทีมออกแบบของเราเริ่มหารือกันเรื่องธีมสำหรับการฉลองครบรอบ 60 ปีของเรา ทุกคนก็เห็นพ้องกันอย่างรวดเร็วว่าคลื่นซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการเปลี่ยนแปลงและความต่อเนื่องนั้นคือลวดลายที่เหมาะสมที่สุดเพื่อการนี้
ทีมออกแบบของเราได้ทดลองวิธีการต่างๆ ในการถ่ายทอดลวดลายคลื่นลงบนหน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่น SPB509J และ SPB511J เราทำงานอย่างใกล้ชิดกับวิศวกรและช่างเทคนิคจากโรงงานผลิตหน้าปัด หลังจากผลิตชิ้นงานต้นแบบออกมามากกว่าปกติถึง 2 เท่าและใช้เวลาในการพัฒนานานกว่าปกติเป็นอย่างมาก เราก็ได้ผลลัพธ์ที่ต้องการ ส่วนหน้าปัดของรุ่น SLA081J นั้นเราใช้เทคนิคใหม่ที่เราพัฒนาทางด้านเทคนิคมาพักหนึ่งแล้ว ซึ่งนับเป็นอีกก้าวของการผลักขอบเขตของความเป็นไปได้ให้ไกลยิ่งขึ้น
รายละเอียดบนหน้าปัดของ SPB506J และ SPB511J มีองค์ประกอบอะไรที่เกิดจากวัฒนธรรมของญี่ปุ่นบ้าง
ในกระบวนการพัฒนาของเราซึ่งรวมถึงการประเมินต้นแบบหลายต่อหลายชิ้น เรามีโอกาสได้กลับไปวิเคราะห์ถึงที่มาของลวดลายคลื่นอีกครั้ง และเป็นที่น่าสนใจว่าการวิจัยของเราได้นำไปสู่ศิลปะภาพพิมพ์ไม้โบราณของญี่ปุ่นที่มีชื่อเรียกว่าอุคิโยะเอะ
แม้อุคิโยะเอะจะเป็นงานศิลปะแบบสองมิติแต่ก็สามารถสร้างความรู้สึกถึงระดับความลึกและการเคลื่อนไหวได้อย่างน่าประทับใจด้วยการใช้ช่องว่างและเทคนิคอย่างชาญฉลาด เรามองว่าศิลปะชนิดนี้มันมีอะไรหลายอย่างที่คล้ายคลึงกับหน้าปัดของนาฬิกาดำน้ำ Seiko อย่างเช่นเรื่องของความซับซ้อนและความมีมิติที่เกิดขึ้นภายในข้อจำกัดเรื่องพื้นที่ ความเชื่อมโยงดังกล่าวนี้จุดประกายความสนใจของเรา และเมื่อเราค้นคว้าต่อไป เราก็พบว่านอกจากโฮกุไซซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างแพร่หลายในระดับนานาชาติแล้วก็ยังมีอิฮาจิที่เป็นช่างฝีมือชั้นครูอีกท่านหนึ่งจากยุคเดียวกัน ซึ่งอิฮาจินั้นมีชื่อเสียงจากงานแกะสลักไม้ลวดลายโปร่งหรือ “รันมะ” ซึ่งเป็นองค์ประกอบทางสถาปัตยกรรมของญี่ปุ่นที่มักติดตั้งระหว่างห้องต่างๆ
แรงบันดาลใจจากงานแกะสลักของอิฮาจิทำให้เราเริ่มทดลองถ่ายทอดลวดลายคลื่นในแบบฉบับของเราเอง เราใช้เทคนิคการสร้างโมเดลแบบสามมิติเพื่อลองผิดลองถูกซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่าจนได้ดีไซน์ที่สามารถส่งต่อความรู้สึกในรูปแบบที่เหมาะสมกับนาฬิกาดำน้ำสัญชาติญี่ปุ่นได้ในที่สุดครับ
ทำไม Marinemaster SLA081J จึงมีลวดลายคลื่นที่แตกต่างจาก 2 รุ่นแรก
เนื่องจากนาฬิการุ่นนี้ออกแบบมาเพื่อการดำน้ำแบบอิ่มตัว เราจึงต้องการให้มันสื่อถึงความลึกลับและดินแดนที่ยังไม่ถูกสำรวจในห้วงลึกของมหาสมุทร หน้าปัดของรุ่น SLA081J ผลิตขึ้นด้วยกระบวนการที่แตกต่างจากนาฬิการุ่นปกติของเราอย่างสิ้นเชิง เรายังคงยึดถือหลักการสำคัญในการขึ้นรูปหน้าปัดและหลักชั่วโมงจากวัสดุชิ้นเดียวกันอยู่เพื่อความแข็งแกร่งและเสถียรภาพในทุกมิติ แต่เราก็พยายามค้นหาหนทางที่จะผสานโครงสร้างอันคงทนนี้เข้ากับความเงางามในอีกระดับหนึ่งด้วยเช่นกัน การวิจัยและพัฒนาของเราในเรื่องนี้ดำเนินต่อเนื่องมาหลายปีแล้ว
การเคลือบหน้าปัดด้วยชั้นวัสดุใสที่มีความหนาทำให้ดูราวกับว่ามีการปิดผนึกน้ำไว้ในแผ่นหน้าปัด ทำให้เกิดสุนทรียะแห่งความลุ่มลึก แสงที่ตกกระทบบนพื้นผิวของหน้าปัดจะเดินทางผ่านชั้นวัสดุใสนี้แล้วสะท้อนลวดลายที่อยู่ด้านล่างก่อนที่จะตีกลับขึ้นมาใหม่ การเดินทางของแสงนี้ทำให้เกิดการสะท้อนแบบแรนด้อมในหลายระดับด้วยกัน จนเกิดเป็นพื้นผิวที่มีความซับซ้อนและเปี่ยมด้วยรายละเอียดที่ทำให้หน้าปัดนี้ดูมีชีวิตชีวาและดึงดูดสายตาคน
ทำไมคุณจึงเลือกใช้วงแหวนขอบตัวเรือนแบบสเตนเลสสตีลแล้วเคลือบดีแอลซีในรุ่น SLA081J แทนที่จะใช้เซรามิกเหมือนนาฬิกาดำน้ำระดับลักชัวรีอื่นๆ ในปัจจุบัน
แน่นอนว่าเซรามิกเป็นวัสดุที่น่าสนใจเพราะว่ามันแข็งแกร่ง งดงาม และทนทานต่อรอยขีดข่วนได้ดีเยี่ยม วัสดุนี้เป็นหนึ่งในตัวเลือกที่เราพิจารณาอย่างจริงจังในช่วงพัฒนา อย่างไรก็ดี เซรามิกก็มีลักษณะเฉพาะตัวที่เปราะแตกได้หากถูกกระแทกอย่างรุนแรงจนเกินไปซึ่งนี่ก็เป็นข้อจำกัดประการหนึ่ง

SLA081J มีชิ้นส่วนสีดำด้านนอกตัวเรือนที่ยึดอยู่ด้วยสกรูว์ ชิ้นส่วนนี้มีหน้าที่อะไรและผลิตจากวัสดุอะไร
ชิ้นส่วนดังกล่าวทำหน้าที่ประคองขอบตัวเรือนแบบหมุนได้ และยังมีส่วนในการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ที่โดดเด่นให้กับนาฬิกา Marinemaster Professional ด้วย ที่ผ่านมานั้นเราเคยมีโครงสร้างช่วยประคองขอบตัวเรือนแบบคล้ายกันในนาฬิการุ่น SBEX001 ที่ออกมาในวาระครบรอบ 50 ปีนาฬิกาดำน้ำ Seiko โดยนาฬิการุ่นนั้นมีดีไซน์ที่แข็งแกร่งและทรงพลังเพื่อสะท้อนตัวตนในฐานะนาฬิกาแบบทูลวอทช์ อย่างไรก็ดี เมื่อเรามาตีความสัญลักษณ์แห่งนาฬิกาดำน้ำของ Seiko ในยุคปัจจุบันกันอีกครั้ง เราจึงเริ่มต้นทบทวนทุกองค์ประกอบใหม่ทั้งหมด ตั้งแต่โครงสร้างภายในไปจนถึงการจัดวางองค์ประกอบภายนอก

ชิ้นส่วนประคองขอบตัวเรือนนี้ผลิตจากสเตนเลสสตีล และสาเหตุที่เราเลือกใช้สเตนเลสสตีลก็เพราะว่าวัสดุชนิดนี้มีความแข็งแกร่ง ทนทานและสามารถขัดแต่งด้วยกระบวนการที่มีคุณภาพสูงได้ครับ
แล้วอย่างนี้ลวดลายคลื่นแบบโฮกุไซของ SPB509J และ SPB511J จะไปปรากฏบนหน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่นอื่นๆ ในอนาคตอีกหรือไม่
ผมไม่สามารถลงในรายละเอียดได้เวลานี้หรอกนะครับ แต่ผมพอจะบอกได้ว่าเราใช้เวลาและใช้ความพยายามไปพอสมควรเลยกับการพัฒนาหน้าปัดนี้ขึ้นมา ดังนั้นเราจึงอยากให้คุณตั้งตารอชมผลิตภัณฑ์อื่นๆ ในอนาคตต่อไปครับ

Seiko produced their first diver’s watch in 1965, marking this year as the 60th anniversary of that achievement. To commemorate the occasion, Seiko has unveiled three new models that pay tribute to the brand’s longstanding fanbase. These include the Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch Seiko Diver’s Watch 60th Anniversary Limited Edition (SPB511J), and, the Prospex 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT Watch Seiko Diver’s Watch 60th Anniversary Limited Edition (SPB509J), each limited to 6,000 pieces. Also launched is the Prospex Marinemaster Professional Seiko Diver’s Watch 60th Anniversary Limited Edition (SLA081J), featuring a titanium case and bracelet with a water resistance of up to 600 metres. This version is equipped with Calibre 8L45 and limited to just 600 pieces worldwide.
Before the official launch event of these limited editions in Thailand aboard the Sirimahannop at Asiatique, World of Watches Thailand and a handful of other media outlets had the opportunity to interview Takumi Kishino, Design Director for Seiko Prospex. The discussion centred around his experience designing various models while maintaining the balance between developing something totally new while preserving the heritage elements passed down from the brand’s early years.

Please describe your role and how you contribute to the shaping of new products.
At Seiko, we have multiple product brands, and currently, I lead the design teams for Prospex, Presage and Astron. As a Design Director, I focus on guiding the creative direction and ensuring the highest standards of design quality. I also mentor designers and strategically drive the creative vision across our brands.
Each product brand has its own unique value proposition. We work closely with cross-functional teams to develop strategies that allow us to evolve and expand these heritage designs in a meaningful and consistent way. Through ongoing dialogue and creative support, we aim to produce designs that are both distinctive and deeply aligned with each product brand’s identity.
As a designer, how do you determine what elements to reinterpret or modify when creating a new design based on a classic model?
Before we begin the creative process, we first thoroughly research the original model’s historical background, the machinery and technology of the time, and any available design blueprints. From there, we analyse these features and try to unravel the original designer’s intent and philosophy, allowing our imagination to expand. We then carefully adjust the design to meet modern product standards, safety regulations, current manufacturing technologies, and the calibers available today – all with an eye toward mass production.
What would you define as the core DNA of Seiko Prospex design?
We believe Seiko Prospex offers four core values to our customers: professional specifications, reliability, a story of challenge, and a sense of romance. Prospex has earned the trust of many professionals by supporting countless adventures throughout its history of pushing boundaries. We remain humble about this legacy and are committed to continuously evolving to meet the needs of the times.
At its core, Prospex’s identity is rooted in a unique aesthetic that prioritises function – with high legibility, robust construction, and reliability backed by craftsmanship designed for professional use. It also pays homage to the pioneering spirit of diver’s and tool watches. But Prospex is more than just engineering excellence. It carries stories embedded in its heritage models. It offers not only a watch to wear but an experience – a romantic connection born from trust and purpose. This is the experience we strive to provide to those who choose to wear Prospex.
What was the most challenging part of the design process for these new anniversary models?
Both models equipped with the 6R and 8L calibers share a dial pattern that took an extraordinary amount of time to develop. As you may know, Seiko diver’s dials are fundamentally designed to be robust – the indices and the base are molded together from a single piece of material to ensure that even under strong impact, the indices never detach.
When our product planning and design teams began discussing the theme to represent our 60th anniversary, it quickly became clear that the wave – symbolising both change and continuity – would be the perfect motif.
For the SPB509J and SPB511J models, our design team experimented with multiple ways to express this motif. Through close collaboration with engineers and dial factory technicians, and after more than twice the usual number of prototypes and much longer development time, we finalised the design. At the same time, for the SLA081J model, we decided to introduce a new technique that had been under technical development, pushing the boundaries even further.
Please share more on any Japanese cultural elements involved in the dial execution of the SPB506J and SPB511J.
During our development process, which involved evaluating multiple prototypes, we took the opportunity to re-examine the origins of the wave motif itself. Interestingly, our research led us to traditional Japanese woodblock prints, especially ukiyo-e.
Despite being a fundamentally two-dimensional art form, ukiyo-e achieves an impressive sense of depth and movement through clever use of space and technique. In many ways, we found this parallel to the dials of Seiko diver’s watches. There’s a shared essence in how complexity and dimensionality are created within constraints. This connection sparked our curiosity, and as we continued to explore, we encountered not just Hokusai, who is well known internationally, but also another master craftsman of the same era: Ihachi. Ihachi is famous for his elaborate openwork transom carvings, or ranma, which are traditional Japanese architectural elements placed between rooms.
Inspired by Ihachi’s carvings, we began experimenting with our own wave expression. Through repeated trial and error with 3D modeling, we developed a design that captures this dynamic feeling in a way that feels uniquely suited to a Japanese diver’s watch.
Why does the Marinemaster SLA081J have a different wave pattern to the other two models?
As a saturation diving model, we wanted this piece to evoke the mysterious and unexplored nature of the deep sea. The dial of the SLA081J is manufactured through a completely different process from our conventional models. While it still follows the core principle of molding both the dial and the indices from a single piece of material to ensure strength and dimensional stability, we’ve been exploring ways to infuse this rugged construction with a new level of aesthetic brilliance. This research and development effort has been ongoing for several years.
The thick, clear coating on the dial almost feels as if water itself has been sealed within, creating a striking sense of depth. Light entering the surface passes through the unusually thick clear layer, reflects off the patterned base, and then travels back up through the same layer. This journey results in multiple layers of random reflections, producing a rich and complex texture that gives the dial a dynamic and captivating expression.
Why did you choose to use a DLC-coated stainless steel bezel insert for the SLA081J instead of ceramic, which is commonly used in luxury dive watches today?
Ceramic is indeed an attractive material – it’s hard, beautiful, and highly resistant to scratches. In fact, it was one of the materials we seriously considered during development. That said, ceramic also has the inherent characteristic of being brittle under excessive impact, which poses certain limitations.
By applying a Diamond-Like Carbon coating to stainless steel, we’ve created a material that offers an ideal balance of hardness, toughness, machinability and durability. This combination results in a structure with surface hardness on par with, or even surpassing ceramic, while maintaining a resilient inner core. The result is exceptional wear and shock resistance, making it perfectly suited for the demanding conditions faced by professional saturation divers. Visually, it also achieves a refined, deep black tone. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to discuss this. The SLA081J features additional black external parts with screws. What is their functional purpose and what is the material used to produce them?
While the rotating bezel retainers serve a functional role in securing the rotating bezel, they also contribute significantly to the distinctive presence and character of the Marinemaster Professional. A similar bezel retention structure was previously used in the SBEX001, our 50th anniversary Seiko Diver’s model. That earlier model had a bold and powerful design that strongly emphasised its identity as a tool watch. However, as we reimagined what the modern-day symbol of Seiko diver watches should be, we began by revisiting everything, from the internal structure to the external component configuration.
One of the key updates was relocating the screw-fastening points to the underside of the case. This allowed us to reduce the lug-to-lug length by about 3 mm, resulting in a more compact and wearable design. The front face is now cleaner and more refined. But we also didn’t want the rotating bezel retainers to appear purely utilitarian. To preserve a strong visual impression, we added six precisely machined grooves to the part, giving it a sense of presence comparable to our past models.
These components are made of stainless steel, chosen for its strength, durability, and high-quality finish.
Will the Hokusai-style wave pattern seen on the dials of SPB509J and SPB511J continue to appear in future watch models?
While I’m unfortunately not able to go into detail at this time, I can say that a significant amount of time and effort went into the development. We hope you’ll look forward to what’s coming next.
