เราพูดคุยกับคนรักนาฬิกาชาวไทยและชาวสิงคโปร์อยู่เสมอ และประโยคหนึ่งที่เรามักจะได้ยินจากลูกค้าผู้ซื้อ Grand Seiko ก็คือว่าชอบนาฬิกาดำน้ำของเขา แต่ใส่ไม่ได้สักเรือนเนื่องจากว่ามันใหญ่เกินไปหรือหนาเกินไป และทางด้าน Grand Seiko เองก็คงจะได้รับคอมเมนท์ดังกล่าวอยู่บ่อยครั้งจนนำไปสู่การพัฒนานาฬิกา Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver ใหม่ซึ่งมีสัดส่วนที่สวมใส่ง่ายยิ่งขึ้นด้วยขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 40.8 มม. และความหนาเพียงแค่ 12.9 มม. เท่านั้น
ชื่อ Ushio ของนาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นคำในภาษาญี่ปุ่นที่แปลว่า “กระแสน้ำขึ้นลง” เราจึงเห็นลวดลายผิวน้ำที่โดดเด่นอยู่บนพื้นหน้าปัด โดยมีรุ่นสีน้ำเงิน (SLGB023) เป็นตัวแทนของน้ำลึก และสีเขียว (SLGB025) ซึ่งเป็นความงามในแถบใกล้ชายฝั่งที่น้ำตื้นกว่า ทั้งสองสีจะมีลักษณะเกรเดียนท์ไล่สีจากอ่อนช่วงตรงกลางหน้าปัดไปเป็นเข้มเมื่อถึงรอบนอก งานนี้
เราบอกเลยว่าเลือกยากจริงๆ เพราะสีน้ำเงินก็เป็นสีประจำองค์กรของ Grand Seiko อยู่แล้ว แต่สีเขียวของ Ushio รุ่นนี้ก็ดูเป็นธรรมชาติที่มีอะไรชวนให้เราอยากค้นหาอยู่ไม่น้อย หลักชั่วโมงโดยรอบมีลักษณะเป็นสีเหลี่ยมผืนผ้าขนาดใหญ่เพื่อให้รองรับปริมาณสารเรืองแสงลูมิไบรท์ได้เป็นจำนวนมาก และบริเวณสันเหลี่ยมกับขอบด้านนอกของหลักชั่วโมงก็ยังได้รับการขัดแต่งอย่างแม่นยำและเงางามเหมือนกับเข็มบอกชั่วโมงและเข็มนาทีอีกด้วย พร้อมเข็มบอกกำลังลานสำรอง 72 ชั่วโมงบนหน้าปัดเพื่อความปลอดภัยสูงสุด
แต่ไม่ว่าจะเป็นรุ่นสีน้ำลึกหรือน้ำตื้นนั้นก็เป็นเรื่องของสุนทรียะเท่านั้น เพราะว่าในด้านประสิทธิภาพนั้นทั้ง SLGB023 และ SLGB025 กันน้ำถึงระดับ 300 เมตรเท่ากันด้วยตัวเรือนวัสดุไฮอินเทนซิตี้ไทเทเนียมซึ่งมีน้ำหนักเบากว่าสเตนเลสสตีลถึงประมาณ 30% วงแหวนขอบตัวเรือนเซรามิกแบบทนทานต่อการขีดข่วนและการกัดกร่อนเป็นสีเดียวกันกับหน้าปัด และมีการเคลือบสารป้องกันแสงสะท้อนทางด้านในของแซฟไฟร์คริสตอลเพื่อให้คุณอ่านค่าเวลาได้อย่างชัดเจนหรือชื่นชมความงามของหน้าปัดได้แบบมีอะไรมาบดบังน้อยที่สุด
และชื่อรุ่นก็ประกาศชัดเจนแต่แรกแล้วว่านาฬิการุ่นนี้ทำงานด้วยเครื่องแบบสปริงไดรฟ์ระดับยูเอฟเอหรือ “อัลตร้าไฟน์แอคคิวเรซี” ที่จะคลาดเคลื่อนภายในเกณฑ์เพียงแค่ +/- 20 วินาที “ต่อปี” ซึ่งสูงกว่าเครื่องสปริงไดรฟ์แบบปกติที่มีการประกาศเกณฑ์ความเที่ยงตรงไว้ที่ +/-10 วินาที “ต่อเดือน” ดังนั้นยิ่งเมื่อเทียบกับเกณฑ์ +6/-4 วินาที “ต่อวัน” ของมาตรฐานโครโนมิเตอร์ที่ใช้กับนาฬิกาจักรกลปกติจึงยิ่งรู้สึกแตกต่างแบบเหลือเชื่อจนน่าตกใจ
สปริงไดรฟ์นี้เป็นนวัตกรรมที่ไม่เหมือนใครของ Grand Seiko พื้นฐานคือเครื่องนาฬิกาจักรกลที่มีเมนสปริงเป็นแหล่งพลังงาน แต่ว่าใช้เรกูเลเตอร์แบบอิเล็กทรอนิกส์เพื่อความเที่ยงตรงสูงในระดับเดียวกันกับเครื่องนาฬิกาควอตซ์ เข็มวินาทีของเครื่อง Spring Drive จะไม่เดินเป็นสเตปสั้นๆ 6-8 ครั้งต่อ 1 วินาทีเหมือนนาฬิกาจักรกลทั่วไป และจะไม่เดินเป็นสเตปยาว 1 ครั้งต่อ 1 วินาทีเหมือนนาฬิกาควอตซ์ แต่จะเดินแบบไหลเรียบเนียนไม่เป็นสเตปให้สายตามองเห็นการหยุดรอจังหวะใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น
สำหรับการยกระดับเครื่องสปริงไดรฟ์อย่างคาลิเบอร์ 9RB1 ในนาฬิการุ่น Ushio นี้ให้มีความเที่ยงตรงระดับยูเอฟเอได้นั้น Grand Seiko ทำได้สำเร็จด้วยแผงไอซีดีไซน์ใหม่และการนำชุดออสซิเลเตอร์และเซ็นเซอร์เข้าไปบรรจุไว้ในซีลสุญญากาศ เพื่อควบคุมอุณหภูมิให้คงที่ที่สุดและเพื่อลดการรบกวนจากปัจจัยภายนอกอย่างเช่นไฟฟ้าสถิตให้เหลือน้อยที่สุด
แต่ไม่ว่าจะเดินตรงเพียงใด เรื่องความสบายข้อมือก็ย่อมเป็นประเด็นสำคัญของนาฬิกาทุกเรือนและผู้ใช้นาฬิกาทุกคน สายแบบเบรซเลทของนาฬิกา Ushio 300 Diver ผลิตจากไฮอินเทนซิตี้ไทเทเนียมเหมือนกับตัวเรือน และมาพร้อมกับบานพับดีไซน์ใหม่ที่ช่วยให้คุณสามารถปรับความยาวสายระหว่างวันเพื่อความสบายข้อมือสูงสุดเป็น 3 สเตปในระยะสเตปละ 2 มม. รวมเป็นทั้งหมด 6 มม. ทั้งยังมีระบบล็อคและปลดล็อคบานพับชั้นที่สองตรงตำแหน่งตราสัญลักษณ์ GS เพื่อลดโอกาสที่จะเกิดการปลดสายโดยไม่ตั้งใจ

We regularly speak with watch enthusiasts in both Thailand and Singapore. One comment we often hear from Grand Seiko owners is that they admire the brand’s diving watches, but cannot wear them because they are either too large or too thick. Grand Seiko themselves must have heard such feedback on many occasions, as it has ultimately led to the development of the new Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver, a watch with considerably more wearable proportions thanks to its 40.8 mm diameter and a thickness of just 12.9 mm.
The name Ushio is a Japanese word meaning “tide”, which explains the striking ripple-inspired texture across the dial. The blue version (SLGB023) represents the deep ocean, while the green version (SLGB025) evokes the beauty of shallower coastal waters. Both feature a gradient effect that transitions from a lighter shade at the centre of the dial to a darker tone around the perimeter.
We can honestly say that choosing between the two is genuinely difficult. Blue is, after all, Grand Seiko’s signature corporate colour, yet the green Ushio possesses a mysterious character that invites further exploration. The large rectangular hour markers are designed to accommodate generous amounts of Lumibrite luminous material, while their bevelled edges and outer surfaces are polished with the same precision and brilliance as the hour and minute hands. A 72-hour power reserve indicator on the dial further enhances practicality and security during use.
Whether you choose the deep-water blue or the shallow-water green, however, the difference is purely aesthetic. In terms of performance, both the SLGB023 and SLGB025 offer water resistance to 300 metres. Their cases are crafted from High-Intensity Titanium, a material approximately 30% lighter than stainless steel. The ceramic bezel insert, matched to the colour of the dial, provides excellent resistance to scratches and corrosion, while the sapphire crystal features an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface to ensure optimal legibility and an unobstructed view of the dial’s intricate beauty.
The model name itself makes it clear that this watch is powered by a Spring Drive movement with U.F.A. or Ultra Fine Accuracy performance. Its stated precision is an astonishing +/- 20 seconds per year, a significant improvement over conventional Spring Drive movements, which are rated at +/- 10 seconds per month. When compared with the chronometer standard of +6/-4 seconds per day commonly applied to mechanical watches, the difference feels almost unbelievable.
Spring Drive remains one of Grand Seiko’s most distinctive innovations. At its core, it is a mechanical movement powered by a mainspring, yet it employs an electronic regulator to achieve a level of precision comparable to that of a quartz watch. The seconds hand does not tick six to eight times per second like a conventional mechanical watch, nor does it advance once per second like a quartz watch. Instead, it glides smoothly and continuously without any visible interruption, creating a uniquely fluid display of time.
To elevate the Calibre 9RB1 used in the Ushio to U.F.A. standards, Grand Seiko developed a newly designed integrated circuit and enclosed the oscillator and sensor assembly within a vacuum-sealed environment. This helps maintain a stable temperature and minimises interference from external influences such as static electricity.
Regardless of accuracy, however, comfort remains an essential consideration for any watch and any wearer. The bracelet of the Ushio 300 Diver is crafted from the same High-Intensity Titanium as the case and features a newly designed clasp that allows adjustment throughout the day in three increments of 2 mm each, providing a total adjustment range of 6 mm. A secondary locking and release mechanism integrated into the clasp beneath the GS logo further reduces the possibility of accidental opening.
Finally, there is a detail that we ourselves only discovered after returning from Watches and Wonders Geneva. The Ushio 300 Diver is offered with an optional rubber strap in the same colour as the dial and bezel, to be purchased separately. It is an entirely new strap design with a dynamic, powerful look that is reminiscent of an arrowhead projecting from the case. Having learned this, we are rather eager to visit the Grand Seiko boutique at Gaysorn Village, Level G, to experience the texture of this new rubber strap firsthand and see just how much lighter it feels on the wrist compared with the titanium bracelet.
