Our editorial team often emphasises that Audemars Piguet should not be known only by the Royal Oak. The brand has produced an extraordinary range of watches throughout their history. What has not been widely seen does not mean it never existed; it simply means that we have not looked deeply enough into their past.
One of the most talked-about developments in recent weeks was the launch of the Neo Frame Jumping Hour, which surprised many observers with both its case shape and complication. Some even went so far as to speculate whether the brand had borrowed the idea from elsewhere. In reality, the jumping hour complication has existed since the era of pocket watches, and the rectangular case is certainly not a design language exclusive to any one manufacture.
More precisely, Audemars Piguet themselves had created a rectangular jumping hour watch as far back as 105 years ago, in 1921. We were fortunate enough to encounter that historical piece by chance while exploring the displays at the Espace Horloger in the Vallée de Joux in 2015. Therefore, when AP unveiled the new Neo Frame Jumping Hour, we were able to immediately compare it with photographs we had taken of the original model. It became clear that the brand has not merely revisited the layout, but has even revived the distinctive design of the case gadroons, preserving a unique character that was already present more than a century ago.
The new Neo Frame Jumping Hour you see here features a rectangular case crafted in pink gold, with a sapphire crystal treated with a black PVD coating covering the front. Only the golden window frames for the hour and minute numerals are left exposed. This differs from the original model, whose fully metal front was far more prone to scratches. Beating inside is the Calibre 7122, based on the Calibre 7121 found in the Royal Oak Jumbo, but modified to display the hours and minutes through rotating discs rather than hands. The power reserve stands at 52 hours.
The watch is paired with a calfskin strap embossed with a special pattern, seamlessly integrated into the case all the way up to the sapphire crystal. It will, without a doubt, gain recognition among watch lovers in no time.
