Readers who have followed our magazine for many years will likely have noticed that we often feature watches from brands whose origins do not lie primarily in watchmaking. Hermès is perhaps the most notable example. Our interest in them has led us to visit all of their workshops, one by one, until we had seen every stage of their production. This is because we are truly impressed by the philosophy Hermès expresses through their timepieces. Their perspectives on time and complications differ markedly from those of most traditional watch brands. Some of their creations even go so far as to challenge long-established conventions and rules.
The watch that first prompted us to study Hermès in earnest was the Slim d’Hermès Quantième Perpétuel, introduced in 2015, just one year after we began publishing World of Watches in Thailand. This 39.5 mm dress watch is one of only a handful of perpetual calendar models in the world to incorporate a second time zone function.
The dial layout is composed of four subdials: a date hand at 12 o’clock; a month and leap year indication at 9 o’clock; a moonphase display featuring a white mother-of-pearl moon on an aventurine sky at 3 o’clock; and, at 6 o’clock, a second time zone display that works together with an adjacent day/night indicator. To adjust the secondary time, the watch owner only needs to activate the pusher at 4 o’clock. Remarkably, these complications are contained within a module measuring only 1.4 mm in thickness – it is mounted atop an ultra-thin base movement that is 2.6 mm thick, thanks to the use of a mini rotor to generate a power reserve of 48 hours.
Over the years, Hermès has presented the Slim d’Hermès Quantième Perpétuel in various case material and dial colour combinations. The version shown on these pages is the latest interpretation, combining a rose gold case with a brown dial, and paired with a Havana brown alligator leather strap. If you are in the market for a perpetual calendar watch that offers something quite different, yet remains perfectly suited to everyday professional wear, this Hermès watch deserves your serious consideration indeed.
