Audemars Piguet เป็นแบรนด์ที่ขึ้นชื่อเรื่องการก้าวข้ามทุกขีดจำกัดทางด้านเทคนิคอย่างต่อเนื่องนับตั้งแต่การก่อตั้งแบรนด์เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1875 โดยเราจะเห็นได้จากผลิตภัณฑ์รุ่นแล้วรุ่นเล่าที่ออกสู่ตลาดเรื่อยมา และในช่วงทศวรรษที่ผ่านมานี้ก็มีนาฬิกาในซีรีส์ชื่อ RD ที่ AP ใช้เพื่อนำเสนอและตอกย้ำถึงนวัตกรรมชั้นสูงที่ตนคิดค้นขึ้นเพื่อเอาชนะความท้าทายทางด้านวิศวกรรมที่ตีกรอบครอบวงการนาฬิกามาอย่างยาวนาน
นาฬิกา RD รุ่นแรกคือ Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie RD#1 เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2015 ซึ่งมีโครงสร้างตัวเรือนรูปแบบพิเศษที่ทำให้เสียงของกลไกลอดผ่านออกมาได้อย่างชัดใสยิ่งขึ้น จากนั้น Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin RD#2 ก็ตามออกมาในปี ค.ศ. 2018 ในฐานะนาฬิกาข้อมือกลไกเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์แบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติที่บางที่สุดในโลก แล้วยังมี Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin RD#3 ในปี ค.ศ. 2022 ซึ่งมีเครื่องนาฬิกาที่บางเพียง 3.4 มม. เท่านั้นด้วยการออกแบบที่หลักแหลม ก่อนที่จะเป็นคิวของ Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Ultra-Complication Universelle RD#4 ที่สามารถคว้ารางวัลใหญ่ Aiguille d’Or อันทรงเกียรติจากรายการ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève ในปี ค.ศ. 2023 ด้วยกว่า 40 ฟังก์ชั่นที่อยู่ในตัว
แล้วก็ถึงคราวที่ฟังก์ชั่นโครโนกราฟจะได้เป็นดาวเด่นในนาฬิกาในซีรีส์ RD บ้างกับการเปิดตัวนาฬิกา Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5 ซึ่ง Audemars Piguet จะผลิตเป็นจำนวนจำกัดเพียง 150 เรือนเนื่องในวาระครบรอบ 150 ปีของแบรนด์ในปีนี้
RD#5 เป็นนาฬิการุ่นแรกในคอลเลคชั่น Royal Oak ที่มีทั้งกลไกฟลายแบ็คโครโนกราฟและฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยองในเรือนเดียวกัน หน้าปัดลวดลายเปอติทตาปิสเซอรีเป็นสีเบลอนุยต์นูอาจ 50 อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ไม่เหมือนใคร เข็มบอกเวลาและหลักชั่วโมงผลิตจากไวท์โกลด์ 18 กะรัตและมีการเคลือบโรเดียมเพื่อความเงางาม ส่วนเข็มของระบบโครโนกราฟนั้นผลิตจากไทเทเนียมเพื่อให้มีน้ำหนักเบาที่สุด และมีการเพิ่มความชัดเจนให้กับการอ่านค่าด้วยการทำเคาน์เตอร์ทั้งสองของระบบโครโนกราฟเป็นลวดลายสเนลเพื่อที่ดูตัดกับฉากหลังที่เป็นลวดลายเปอติทตาปิสเซอรีอย่างน่าชม
นวัตกรรมที่เป็นความล้ำหน้าของ RD#5 คือการที่ Audemars Piguet มาเริ่มคิดใหม่ว่าจะทำอย่างไรได้บ้างเพื่อให้การสั่งการระบบโครโนกราฟมีความนุ่มนวล และทำให้ตัวนาฬิกาทั้งเรือนนั้นมีความบางในระดับที่เหมาะสมที่สุดด้วย ปุ่มกดของระบบโครโนกราฟโดยทั่วไปนั้นจะเคลื่อนที่เป็นระยะทางประมาณ 1 มม. และต้องใช้แรงกดประมาณ 1.5 กก. ดังนั้นเป้าหมายของ AP ในการออกแบบ RD#5 คือการทำให้ปุ่มกดมีระยะการเคลื่อนที่เพียง 0.3 มม. และใช้แรงกดเพียง 0.3 กก. เท่านั้นซึ่งไม่ต่างอะไรจากปุ่มที่เราพบเห็นบนสมาร์ทโฟนสักเครื่องหนึ่ง แล้ว AP ยังมีการออกแบบปุ่มเลือกฟังก์ชั่นการทำงานของเม็ดมะยมฝังไว้ตรงกลางเม็ดมะยมด้วย เพื่อให้เจ้าของนาฬิกาเลือกสลับไปมาได้อย่างรวดเร็วระหว่างการใช้เม็ดมะยมเพื่อการขึ้นลานและเพื่อการตั้งเวลา
เครื่องนาฬิกาแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 8100 ของ RD#5 มีฟังก์ชั่นฟลายแบ็คโครโนกราฟแบบที่เข็มนาทีดีดไปข้างหน้าอย่างฉับพลันแบบที่นักสะสมส่วนมากชื่นชอบ การควบคุมการทำงานใช้กลไกคอลัมน์วีลเพื่อการเริ่มต้นและหยุดจับเวลาอย่างนุ่มนวล กลไกรีเซ็ทเข็มเป็นเวอร์ชั่นที่พัฒนาขึ้นใหม่โดยใช้ระบบแร็คแอนด์พินเนียนซึ่งสามารถพาเข็มโครโนกราฟกลับไปยังตำแหน่งเริ่มต้นได้ในรูปแบบเรโทรเกรดอย่างลื่นไหลยิ่งกว่าเดิมในขณะที่ใช้พลังงานน้อยกว่าเดิมด้วย
ในเรื่องของตูร์บิยองนั้น ใครที่คุ้นเคยกับ RD#3 จากปี ค.ศ. 2022 จะรู้จักกลไกฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยองที่ AP พัฒนาขึ้นเพื่อนาฬิการุ่นนั้นอยู่แล้วว่าเป็นกลไกที่ได้รับการออกแบบขึ้นมาใหม่หมดให้มีน้ำหนักเบากว่าเดิมและบางกว่าเดิมด้วยการย้ายเอาชุดขับเคลื่อนกรงไทเทเนียมไปไว้อยู่รอบนอก ในครั้งนี้กลไกฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยองดังกล่าวถูกนำไปรวมกับกลไกฟลายแบ็คโครโนกราฟจนเกิดเป็นคอมพลิเคชั่นคู่อันน่าทึ่ง
ตัวคาลิเบอร์ 8100 เองนั้นเป็นเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบอัลตร้าธินซึ่งบางเพียงแค่ 4 มม. ปัจจัยหนึ่งก็คือการใช้โรเตอร์แบบรอบนอกที่ผลิตจากแพลทตินัมซึ่งไม่เพียงลดความหนาของตัวเครื่องไปได้แต่ยังเผยให้เห็นความงามของการขัดแต่งเครื่องได้เป็นอย่างดีอีกด้วย และเครื่องรุ่นนี้ได้รับการปรับตั้งให้เหมาะสมสำหรับไลฟ์สไตล์ของคนยุคปัจจุบันที่มีความสปอร์ต พร้อมทั้งมอบกำลังลานสำรองที่ยาวนานถึง 72 ชั่วโมง

Ever since its creation in 1875, Audemars Piguet has been consistently pushing technical boundaries with one creation after another. In the past decade alone, the RD series of watches has provided a platform for the Manufacture to highlight the solutions it has conceived to overcome engineering challenges in the world of high watchmaking.
This began with Royal Oak Concept Supersonnerie RD#1 in 2015 which delivered clearer sound through its specially designed case construction; the Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin RD#2 in 2018 that emerged as the world’s thinnest selfwinding perpetual calendar wristwatch; the Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin RD#3 in 2022 whose calibre measured a mere 3.4 mm in thickness thanks to clever engineering; and, the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Ultra-Complication Universelle RD#4 which won the most prestigious Aiguille d’Or Prize at the 2023 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève with its 40+ functions.
The time has come for the chronograph to be presented as the central focus of the RD series. Today, Audemars Piguet has officially unveiled the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5.
Limited to 150 units to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Manufacture, the RD#5 unites a flyback chronograph with a flying tourbillon for the first time in the Royal Oak collection. Its dial is given the signature Petite Tapisserie dial in “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” and rhodium-toned 18-carat white gold hour-markers and 18-carat white gold hands with luminescent material, while the chronograph hands are made of titanium for lightness. Legibility is further ensured by the use of snailed finish for the two chronograph counters which contrast beautifully against the Petite Tapisserie background.
The innovation of RD#5 lies in how Audemars Piguet rethinks how a chronograph should deliver enhanced tactile finesse and at the same time present itself an optimal slimness. While typical chronograph push-pieces have a general travel distance of 1 mm and require a force of approximately 1.5 kg, the goal in the development of the RD#5 was to reduce those numbers to 0.3 mm and 0.3 kg, respectively, which are not dissimilar to smartphone buttons. Similarly, Audemars Piguet has built a discreet selector into the crown, allowing a quick and visually confirmed alternation between winding and time-setting functions.
The selfwinding Calibre 8100 of RD#5 is a flyback chronograph with an instantaneous minute jump which is a characteristic deemed desirable by collectors. It has a column wheel for a smooth control of the start and stop operation. Its zero-resetting mechanism is a newly developed one, based on the rack-and-pinion system, to return the chronograph hands the starting position in a smoother retrograde motion while also using less energy in the process.
Where the tourbillon is concerned, those who are familiar with the RD#3 from 2022 may recall the flying tourbillon that was completely redesigned for that watch to be lighter and thinner by repositioning the components to drive the titanium cage peripherally. This time, it is combined with the flyback chronograph to make a fascinating double complication. Measuring only 4 mm slim, Calibre 8100 is an ultra-thin movement, partly due to the use of a platinum peripheral oscillating weight to reduce overall thickness while also affording a clear view of the spectacularly finished movement. It is regulated to account for modern sporting lifestyle and offers a generous power reserve of 72 hours.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5 is presented in a primarily satin finished titanium case that measures 39 mm in diameter and 8.1 mm in thickness. Several elements are in mirror polished bulk metallic glass or BMG for a striking contrast, such as the bezel, the push-pieces, and, the function-selector in the crown. The archival Audemars Piguet logo on the dial and the “150 Years” and the “1 of 150 pieces” engravings on the caseback complete the allure of this classical yet innovative timepiece.
