We commend Maurice Lacroix for their practical decision to go against the trend of smaller watches by introducing new models in a larger size.
The story behind this move dates back to 2022, when Maurice Lacroix launched the Aikon Automatic Skeleton, a timepiece that quickly became a resounding success. Beyond the appeal of the Aikon’s integrated bracelet design, which seamlessly connects to the case in a way that aligns with current market preferences, the watch featured a sapphire crystal dial that revealed the intricacies of its skeletonised mechanical movement. This open-worked design allowed wearers to admire key components such as the balance wheel and even the barrel housing the mainspring, lending the piece a highly technical and sophisticated aesthetic.
However, as wrist sizes and personal preferences vary, not everyone has embraced the trend towards smaller watches. Maurice Lacroix received numerous requests from customers and retailers alike for a larger version of the Aikon Automatic Skeleton. Once demand had reached a certain level, they seized the opportunity and, in January this year, unveiled the Aikon Automatic Skeleton in a new 42 mm case size.
Alongside the size variation, Maurice Lacroix also responded to calls for greater colour diversity. While the original Aikon Automatic Skeleton was characterised by a monochromatic dark grey palette, some customers sought a more vibrant alternative. As a result, the new 42 mm model was introduced in both dark grey and blue, while the 39 mm version also received the addition of a blue dial variant. This expansion allows buyers to select not only their preferred case size but also the colour that best suits their taste.
The Aikon Automatic Skeleton is powered by a self-winding movement developed specifically for Maurice Lacroix in collaboration with Swiss movement manufacturer Sellita. A quick way to distinguish between the two sizes is the placement of the brand’s logo. On the 42 mm model, the logo is positioned along the upper curve of the metallic dial flange, whereas on the 39 mm version, it sits at the top centre of the sapphire crystal dial. Both sizes feature the ML Easy Strap Exchange system, allowing seamless transitions between the bracelet and other strap options from Maurice Lacroix without the need for tools.
