“นวัตกรรม” เป็นคำที่ถูกใช้อยู่บ่อยครั้งในวงการนาฬิกาจนบางครั้งคุณค่าของคำนี้ก็ถูกลดทอนไปบ้าง แต่เมื่อพูดถึงนาฬิกา Freak ของ Ulysse Nardin แล้วทุกคนก็ย่อมเห็นพ้องต้องกันว่านี่คือนาฬิกาที่เราสามารถใช้คำว่า “นวัตกรรม” ได้อย่างเต็มปากและไม่มีใครมาเถียงได้ เพราะการออกแบบของ Freak รุ่นแรกในปี ค.ศ. 2001 ไม่เพียงแค่แปลกใหม่ แต่ถึงขั้นแหวกทุกกรอบที่มีอยู่แต่เดิม ด้วยการทำให้เครื่องนาฬิกามีลักษณะเป็นโลหะสามเหลี่ยมขนาดใหญ่ที่หมุนครบรอบในเวลา 60 นาทีจึงทำหน้าที่เป็นเข็มนาทีไปในตัว ทั้งยังเรียกว่าเป็นคารูเซลได้ด้วย ส่วนการแสดงค่าชั่วโมงนั้นทำโดยจานหมุนอีกจานหนึ่งที่อยู่ข้างใต้
และในปีนี้นาฬิกา Freak ก็มีอายุครบ 25 ปีพอดี จึงถือเป็นโอกาสอันดีที่ Ulysse Nardin จะได้เปิดตัวนาฬิกา [Super] Freak ในฐานะนาฬิกาที่บอกเวลาได้เพียงอย่างเดียวโดยไม่มีคอมพลิเคชั่นแสดงค่าอื่นใดซึ่งมีความซับซ้อนที่สุดในโลก ทั้งยังเป็นนาฬิกาตูร์บิยองคู่พ่วงคารูเซลแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่นแรกของโลกด้วย

“Innovation” is a word so frequently used within the watch industry that, at times, its weight can feel somewhat diluted. Yet when speaking about the Freak by Ulysse Nardin, everyone would agree that this is a timepiece for which the word “innovation” can be used without hesitation or argument. The design of the first Freak watch in 2001 is not merely unconventional, but radically disruptive to every established norm. Its movement takes the form of a large triangular metal structure that completes one full rotation every 60 minutes, thereby functioning as the minute hand itself while also qualifying as a carousel mechanism. Hour indication, meanwhile, is handled by another rotating disc positioned beneath it.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Freak, making it the perfect occasion for Ulysse Nardin to unveil the [Super] Freak – arguably the world’s most complex time-only watch, while also standing as the first self-winding double tourbillon watch with carousel ever created.
This is a watch without a dial. The movement itself, the Calibre UN-252, completes one full rotation every hour, with the arrow-shaped tip serving as the minute hand. Beneath it sits a translucent blue rotating disc bearing a larger arrow motif that functions as the hour hand per the signature characteristic of the Freak lineage. The new addition here is the revolving seconds display, positioned next to the minute arrow tip, and flanked on either side by inclined tourbillons set at 10-degree angles. Winding is fully automatic via Ulysse Nardin’s advanced Grinder system to obtain a full 3-day power reserve. The sheer complexity of the mechanism results in a movement comprising no fewer than 511 components.
Like the original Freak, the [Super] Freak has no crown. Time adjustment is performed through the bezel by lifting the locking mechanism at 6 o’clock, rotating the bezel until the correct time is reached, and then pressing the lock back into place. The 44 mm white gold case is paired with a grey rubber strap embossed with a fabric-style texture and fitted with a white gold folding clasp.
This extraordinary timepiece is the result of four years of development and will be produced as a limited edition of only 50 pieces.
